What Is the Matthew Effect in Science? How Recognition Shapes Careers

The Matthew effect in science is the tendency for recognition to accumulate around researchers who are already well known. A prominent scientist may receive a larger share of credit for work produced with less-famous colleagues, while an established name can also make a finding easier for the community to notice. Robert K. Merton introduced the term in a 1968 Science paper.

It is best understood as a possible social process—not a rule that reputation always defeats research quality. Recognition can affect visibility, attribution, funding and access to opportunities, but ability, effort, quality, field, institutional access and chance also shape scientific careers.

What the Matthew effect means

Merton defined the phenomenon as “the accruing of greater increments of recognition for particular scientific contributions to scientists of considerable repute and the withholding of such recognition from scientists who have not yet made their mark.” His 1968 article, “The Matthew Effect in Science,” examined both the reward system and the communication system of science.

In the reward system, the central issue is unequal credit. Two researchers may contribute comparably to a discovery, yet the already famous scientist receives more citations, invitations, prizes or public attribution. In the communication system, the famous scientist’s name may help the work attract attention, readers and discussion. Those are related but distinct outcomes: a name can increase visibility without proving that the famous author did more of the intellectual work.

Merton later elaborated the idea in “The Matthew Effect in Science, II: Cumulative Advantage and the Symbolism of Intellectual Property,” published in Isis in 1988. “Cumulative advantage” is now common shorthand for the process by which an early lead in recognition can produce further advantages.

How recognition can compound over a career

1. Prior recognition increases visibility

Editors, reviewers, conference organizers and other scientists are more likely to notice work associated with a familiar name. Visibility can affect who reads a paper, discusses it in seminars or considers it when forming collaborations. This does not mean every gatekeeper consciously favors prestige; institutional routines and limited attention can produce similar results.

2. Visibility affects credit and reception

When a paper is discussed, the most recognizable author may become the mental representative of the result. That can alter how credit is assigned among collaborators. Visibility can also affect how quickly a finding spreads, even when the underlying quality is held constant.

3. Recognition can become a material advantage

Merton argued that recognition may be converted into enlarged facilities and access to the means of scientific production. In practical terms, status can help a researcher assemble collaborators, obtain equipment, attract students or compete for grants. This is a proposed pathway, not a claim that every recognized scientist receives the same resources.

4. New opportunities can generate more evidence of achievement

Additional resources and invitations create more chances to publish, collaborate and lead projects. Those outputs can produce further recognition, creating a feedback loop. The loop is not automatic: unsuccessful projects, changes of field, institutional constraints and random events can interrupt it.

Why the effect is both a reward problem and a communication problem

Merton’s account contains a genuine tension. Fair allocation of credit calls for recognizing each contributor’s work. Efficient communication may favor using established names as signals that a result deserves attention. A famous scientist’s association can therefore help a useful finding reach an audience while simultaneously obscuring a less-known collaborator’s contribution.

Calling this tension an “effect” does not settle whether the overall result is beneficial or harmful. The answer depends on the outcome being measured. More visibility may help a valid discovery circulate, while unequal attribution can damage a junior researcher’s career. Analyses should specify whether they are studying credit, attention, diffusion, funding or long-term career outcomes.

What empirical studies measure

Study Population or design Outcome examined Interpretation and limit
Robert K. Merton, 1968, Science Conceptual account of scientific reward and communication systems Disproportionate recognition and the visibility of work linked to established names Defines possible mechanisms; it is not a universal estimate of how often they occur
Stephen Cole, 1970, American Journal of Sociology Study of professional standing and the reception of scientific discoveries Initial reception and later diffusion of papers Assessed quality mattered more for initial reception; reputation affected the speed of diffusion among equal-quality papers
“The Matthew effect in science funding,” 2018, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences Applicants just above and below a funding threshold with near-identical review scores Funding accumulated during the following eight years Provides evidence from one large funding program and its threshold; it should not be generalized to every field or country
“Empirical demonstration of the Matthew effect in scientific research careers,” 2023, Journal of Informetrics Survey and bibliometric information on chemistry researchers Distribution of research-career trajectories Reports a generalized extreme-value fit for this field and dataset; a distributional fit is not a universal causal law
“The Matthew effect in empirical data,” 2015 review Review of cumulative-advantage studies across several settings Evidence including citation propagation and career longevity Useful for framing the concept broadly, but conclusions still depend on the specific setting and measure

Initial reception is not the same as later diffusion

Stephen Cole’s 1970 study is an important qualification to a simplistic prestige story. It found that assessed quality was more important than author-stratification variables when papers first received attention. In other words, professional standing did not simply override judgments about the work itself at the initial stage.

Cole did find that reputation influenced the speed with which equal-quality papers diffused. A well-known author could therefore accelerate the spread of a paper after its quality had been judged comparable. This distinction explains why two statements can both be true: quality can dominate the first evaluation, while reputation still changes how quickly the result travels through the scientific community.

What the funding-threshold evidence shows

The 2018 study “The Matthew effect in science funding” compared winners just above a particular review-score threshold with near-identical-score applicants just below it. Over the subsequent eight years, the winners accumulated more than twice as much funding as the near-miss nonwinners.

The authors associated part of this difference with nonwinners stopping their pursuit of other opportunities. That interpretation points to a feedback mechanism: a small initial decision can alter later behavior and access, which then widens the gap. The design is informative because the applicants near the cutoff had very similar scores, but it still describes one program and its institutional context. It does not establish that every funding system produces the same multiplier or that the threshold alone explains every later outcome.

What the chemistry-career study adds

A 2023 study assembled survey and bibliometric information on 1,067 chemistry researchers and reported that career distributions fit a generalized extreme-value model. Such a model describes the shape of observed career outcomes, including the fact that a small number of researchers may accumulate unusually large success.

The result is evidence about a particular field, sample and statistical model. It does not demonstrate that all scientific careers follow one Matthew-effect law, nor does a good statistical fit by itself identify the causal role of recognition. Chemistry’s publication practices, funding patterns and collaboration structures may differ from those in physics, medicine, the social sciences or engineering.

How the effect can appear at different career stages

Entering a field

Early-career researchers usually have little established reputation, so their work may depend more heavily on supervisors, institutional affiliations and collaborators for visibility. A strong result can still be overlooked if potential readers do not encounter it or cannot easily assess its significance.

Publishing and receiving credit

Author order, presentation opportunities and the language used in news coverage can shape who becomes associated with a result. Transparent contribution statements and accurate citation of all relevant work help reduce ambiguity, although they cannot eliminate every informal attribution habit.

Competing for grants

Funding decisions can create a sharp break between otherwise similar applicants. Winning provides money and a track record for the next application; losing may reduce the time, confidence or institutional support available for another attempt. The threshold study illustrates this pathway without showing that every competition has the same consequences.

Building collaborations and teams

Recognized scientists may receive more invitations, giving them access to broader networks and complementary expertise. Those networks can improve project quality, but they can also concentrate opportunities among the same people and make it harder for outsiders to enter a field.

Long-term visibility

Repeated invitations, citations and leadership roles make a scientist more familiar to future evaluators. At this stage, accumulated recognition can become part of the evidence used to allocate still more opportunities, even when evaluators are trying to judge current work independently.

What the Matthew effect is not

  • It is not proof that famous researchers produce inferior work. The concept concerns how recognition and opportunity are distributed, not a universal judgment about scientific ability.
  • It is not the claim that quality never matters. Cole’s findings show quality was more important for initial reception in the study he examined.
  • It is not identical to inequality caused by any factor. Differences in training, resources, field, effort, discrimination, personal circumstances and chance can produce unequal careers without being evidence of cumulative advantage.
  • It is not a single measurable quantity. Credit, attention, diffusion, funding and career longevity require different data and may show different patterns.
  • It is not the same as causation. An association between reputation and later success may reflect prior quality, institutional access or selection effects unless the study design addresses those alternatives.

How to evaluate a claim that the effect is operating

  1. Define the outcome. Decide whether the claim concerns citations, author credit, paper visibility, grant income, promotions, collaborations or career length.
  2. Identify the comparison. Ask whether the analysis compares researchers with similar work, scores, backgrounds or opportunities. Without a credible comparison, reputation may simply be standing in for quality or resources.
  3. Separate timing. Distinguish an initial editorial or peer-review decision from later diffusion, funding or promotion. Evidence for one stage does not automatically apply to another.
  4. Check the population and institution. Record the field, country, funding program, career stage and study period. A result from chemistry or one grant system cannot be assumed to describe all science.
  5. Inspect the mechanism. Determine whether the proposed pathway is attention, attribution, access to facilities, additional funding, collaboration networks or researchers’ responses to earlier outcomes.
  6. Test alternative explanations. Consider research quality, productivity, institutional prestige, team composition, mentoring, field growth and chance before attributing the difference to recognition.
  7. Match the conclusion to the method. A conceptual argument, a threshold comparison and a fitted career distribution answer different questions. None should be presented as a universal law without broader evidence.

What institutions can do with this insight

Institutions cannot remove every effect of reputation, but they can make evaluation more sensitive to contribution and context. Contribution statements can clarify who did what; reviewers can be asked to assess the work before being influenced by prestige signals where feasible; and panels can examine a researcher’s opportunity set rather than treating uninterrupted output as the only evidence of potential.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Funding bodies can also monitor outcomes around decision thresholds and track whether near-miss applicants receive meaningful routes to future opportunities. Such monitoring does not prove that a Matthew effect is present, but it can reveal whether a single decision produces persistent gaps that the organization should address.

Why the concept still matters

The Matthew effect gives scientists a vocabulary for discussing how early recognition may shape later chances without reducing every career difference to bias. Merton’s original contribution was to show that scientific credit and scientific communication can pull in different directions. Later studies demonstrate that the relevant outcome matters: quality may dominate initial reception, reputation may accelerate diffusion, a funding decision may alter later accumulation, and career distributions may contain a small group with exceptional success.

The most defensible conclusion is therefore conditional. Recognition can become an advantage that compounds, but its strength depends on the institution, field, evaluation stage and available opportunities. Treating it as a mechanism to investigate—rather than a verdict about every successful scientist—keeps the concept useful and empirically honest.
