The little circle on a Leatherman is usually a lanyard ring or carry ring. It gives you an attachment point for a lanyard, carabiner, sling, or—on some compact models—a key ring. It is a carrying and retention feature, not a hidden screwdriver, opener, or other working implement.
What the circle does
Leatherman places the ring at the end of selected multi-tools so the tool can stay attached to something instead of sitting loose in a pocket, bag, vehicle, or toolbox. You can connect it to a lanyard, clip it to a carabiner, attach it to a sling, or keep a compact tool with your keys when the model supports that use.

Leatherman’s Wave Plus product information calls the feature a “Lanyard Ring” and says: “This secure ring attaches the tool safely and securely to a lanyard.” The company’s quick-release accessory description says the ring can keep a multi-tool close at hand when clipped to a “lanyard, carabiner, or sling.”

The circle does not perform a cutting, driving, gripping, or opening job. It is hardware for carrying and retention. Treating it as a pry point or as a load-bearing climbing attachment could damage the ring or the tool; the manufacturer descriptions establish its carry purpose, not a climbing or lifting rating.

Why the name varies by model
“Little circle” is an appearance-based description, and Leatherman uses different names for similar-looking features. On full-size models it is commonly a lanyard ring. On the Micra, the comparable feature is called a Key Ring Attachment; Leatherman describes it as “A split ring loop for attaching a tool to a key ring to keep your multi-tool handy at all times.”

How to identify the feature on your tool
- Find the model name. Check the handle, blade marking, packaging, or the original product information. Names such as Wave Plus, Surge, Micra, ARC, Bond, and Curl matter because the hardware differs.
- Look at how the circle is attached. A permanent loop may be built into the tool. A removable accessory may use a quick-release mechanism or two visible screws.
- Match the intended attachment. Use a lanyard, carabiner, sling, or key ring according to the feature’s design. A Micra-style split ring is the clearest example of a key-ring attachment.
- Check the exact compatibility list before replacing it. Search by the model name and the phrase

Replacing a damaged or missing ring
Choose the replacement by attachment method and model family, not by appearance alone. Leatherman lists a Quick-Release Lanyard Ring for the Wave Plus, Wave Alpha, Charge family, and Surge, while its Two-Screw Lanyard Ring is listed for ARC, Bond, and Curl. Those are different designs, so ordering a generic loop or a ring intended for another family can result in a poor fit or unusable hardware.

When the ring is useful
- Frequent work: attach the tool to a lanyard so it remains close while moving between tasks.
- Outdoor or field carry: connect it to a carabiner or sling for easier access than a loose pocket carry.
- Compact tools: use a key-ring attachment on a small model such as the Micra when you want the tool with your keys.
- Retention: reduce the chance of misplacing the multi-tool by keeping it tethered to a designated carry point.
What to remember
The circle is primarily a carry point. Call it a lanyard ring, carry ring, or key-ring attachment according to the model, and verify the model before purchasing replacement hardware. Its purpose is to keep the multi-tool attached and available—not to add another functional implement.
