The unofficial Valor Mortis DB progression table records 28 earned stat picks and 49,533 total Catalysts at that level. That is a database-reported cap, not a number confirmed in an official developer progression document.
For a practical build, buy Maximum Health first, then Maximum Stamina (Endurance), and direct later picks into melee, firearms or Transmutation stats. No cited source documents a prestige mode, conversion, or other sink for points earned after level 29, so any post-cap behavior remains unconfirmed.

What level cap does the current data show?
The Valor Mortis DB progression table, accessed in 2026, lists level 29 as the highest level in its progression data. It also says every level grants exactly one stat-upgrade pick. Because the table begins with no pick at level 1 and shows 28 picks at level 29, the figures are internally consistent: 29 levels produce 28 earned picks after the starting level.
That table is an unofficial fan database. Treat level 29 as the best currently documented cap rather than an official statement from the developer. Xbox Wire’s official coverage explains how leveling interacts with Ambers but does not publish a numeric cap.

Progression checkpoints
| Level | Earned stat picks | Total Catalysts shown |
|---|---|---|
| 5 | 4 | 2,431 |
| 10 | 9 | 7,319 |
| 15 | 14 | 14,135 |
| 20 | 19 | 22,835 |
| 25 | 24 | 34,476 |
| 29 | 28 | 49,533 |
The Catalyst numbers are cumulative totals displayed by the database, not a claim that you should carry that much currency at once. Catalysts are spent at Lanterns, and unspent currency can be lost when you die.
How many points do you have at level 29?
At level 29, the progression table reports 28 stat picks. A “pick” is the upgrade choice you make when advancing your powers; it is separate from the Catalysts used to pay for the level-up. In other words, reaching the listed cap gives you 28 upgrade decisions and requires 49,533 Catalysts in total according to the database.
The sources do not establish that level 29 is the final level in every future build or update. They document progression through that level as of the database’s 2026 access date. If a later patch adds levels, the cap and total picks could change.

Why the final levels are expensive
The progression curve becomes sharply more expensive near the top. Levels 26 through 29 require 15,057 Catalysts in total, while levels 1 through 9 require 7,319. The final four levels therefore cost more than twice the first nine levels combined.
This is why early, broadly useful upgrades matter. A player who spends every Catalyst immediately on narrow damage bonuses may reach a difficult fight with less health or Endurance than needed, while a player who secures survivability and action economy first gets value from those stats across every weapon and encounter.

What should you spend stat picks on first?
1. Maximum Health for the safest opening
The Valor Mortis leveling guide identifies Maximum Health as the best early purchase. Each Maximum Health upgrade listed in the stats database adds 10 maximum Health. More health gives you additional room to survive a missed dodge, a failed parry, or an unfamiliar boss pattern while learning.
Health is also the least restrictive investment. It remains useful whether your eventual plan uses a sword, firearms, Transmutation, or a parry-focused setup. If you are unsure which damage identity you want, put your first picks here rather than locking into a specialized stat.

2. Maximum Stamina for more actions
Maximum Stamina is the database’s name for the Endurance resource. Each listed upgrade adds 6 maximum Endurance. Endurance pays for attacks, dodges, blocks and sprinting, so the stat improves both offense and defense.
The leveling guide also treats Endurance as the firearm-damage stat. That makes it especially important for guns, but melee players benefit too: a larger bar lets you attack and still retain enough resource for an emergency dodge or block.
3. Choose a damage lane only after the foundation
Once you have a reasonable health and Endurance base, specialize. The right order depends on how you actually defeat enemies, how much precision you can reliably execute, and whether your build must sustain ammunition or Nephtoglobin.
| Build direction | Recommended priority from the leveling guide | What it rewards |
|---|---|---|
| Melee | Melee Damage, Maximum Health, Critical Damage, Parrying Impact, Melee Stamina Cost | Close-range pressure, critical attacks and efficient repeated swings |
| Firearms | Maximum Stamina, Headshot Damage, Critical Damage, Maximum Health, Ammunition Drop Chance | Endurance-supported shooting, accurate headshots and ammunition sustain |
| Transmutation | Nephtoglobin Sufferance, Transmutation Damage, Status Buildup, Maximum Health, Nephtoglobin Extraction | Status application, Transmutation damage and resource management |
Build-specific ways to spend the remaining picks
Melee-focused characters
After the initial health and Endurance purchases, prioritize Melee Damage. Add Critical Damage if your equipment and play style create regular critical opportunities. Maximum Health remains a sensible third investment when you are still learning a boss or fighting in cramped arenas.
Parrying Impact is a damage stat as well as a defensive one. The stats database says each upgrade adds 6% additional Posture damage on a successful parry. Choose it when parries are a deliberate part of your offense; it has less value if you rarely attempt them. Melee Stamina Cost rounds out the route by making repeated attacks cheaper, leaving more Endurance for movement.
Firearms-focused characters
Firearms players should treat Maximum Stamina as a core stat because Endurance is tied to firearm damage in the leveling guide. Headshot Damage is the next clear specialization when you can consistently place shots. Critical Damage can outperform a general damage option for a player who reliably creates critical-hit opportunities.
Maximum Health protects a ranged character when an enemy closes the distance or a shot misses at a bad time. Ammunition Drop Chance belongs later in the route unless ammunition scarcity is already limiting your progress; it improves sustainability rather than the damage of each individual shot.
Transmutation-focused characters
Transmutation builds should prioritize Nephtoglobin Sufferance, Transmutation Damage and Status Buildup. That order supports the build’s core identity: applying and exploiting status effects rather than relying only on weapon strikes.
Rank #4
Nephtoglobin Extraction is a resource option for players who spend Nephtoglobin aggressively. The database lists +30% Nephtoglobin extracted per melee hit for each upgrade. It is most valuable when your rotation includes enough melee hits to trigger the extraction repeatedly; it is less urgent for a build that rarely enters melee range.
Parry-centered builds
A parry route has a higher execution demand than a health-first route. Parrying Impact’s 6% Posture-damage increase per upgrade only pays off when the parry succeeds, so do not sacrifice all survivability for it while you are still learning enemy timing.
A practical progression is to establish Maximum Health and Maximum Stamina first, then invest in Parrying Impact and the critical-damage options that your successful parries create. This preserves a safety margin while still turning defensive timing into faster posture breaks.

Leveling does more than provide stat picks. Xbox Wire wrote on October 13, 2026: “The more you level William, the more Ambers you can equip, so use catalyst clots from your inventory to push past the next level threshold.” The progression guide reports one starting Amber slot and as many as five as progression continues.
That means a level-up can increase your build’s flexibility even when the next stat pick is not exciting. Amber effects may improve recovery, resource generation or other parts of your setup, so check the next slot threshold before spending catalyst clots elsewhere. The exact number of slots you have depends on your progression point; the cited guide does not assign every slot to a specific level.

How to protect Catalysts while leveling
Catalysts are spent at Lanterns. The mechanics reference describes the action simply as “Level UpSpend Catalysts at a Lantern to increase your powers.” The progression guide adds an important risk: when you die, your entire unspent Catalyst balance remains where you fell, and a second death before recovery causes that balance to be lost.
- Return to a Lantern before a risky section. Bank the currency instead of carrying a large balance into an unfamiliar area.
- Level before a boss attempt. Convert enough Catalysts into a level and stat pick so a failed attempt cannot erase the whole balance.
- Recover a dropped balance immediately after an ordinary death. Do not start another dangerous detour first; a second death can remove the original drop.
- Keep a reserve for the next threshold. If an Amber slot or a level is close, avoid spending every Catalyst on incidental options.
The guide’s wording is explicit: you do not lose a percentage or a level; you lose the entire unspent balance if the dropped currency is not recovered before another death.
What happens to excess points after level 29?
No cited source documents a post-cap conversion, prestige system, bonus stat currency, or automatic refund for additional points. The available documentation stops at level 29 and does not explain a confirmed use for points earned after that point.
Recommended Free Tools
Do not assume that excess Catalysts become a new resource, that stat picks can be banked indefinitely, or that a prestige loop exists. If the game allows currency to continue dropping after you have reached the database-listed cap, the sources here still do not establish how it is spent. The accurate answer is that post-cap handling is unresolved in the currently documented material.
Quick Recap
A practical level-up checklist
- Confirm your current level and Amber capacity at a Lantern.
- Buy Maximum Health early, using the database’s +10 Health value as the expected benefit per upgrade.
- Add Maximum Stamina for +6 Endurance per listed upgrade, especially if you attack, dodge or block frequently.
- Select one damage identity: Melee, firearms or Transmutation.
- Match specialist stats to execution: Parrying Impact and Critical Damage reward reliable timing, while ammunition and Nephtoglobin options improve sustainability.
- Spend Catalysts before exploration or a boss so a death cannot strand your entire balance.
- At level 29, treat 28 picks and 49,533 total Catalysts as the current database benchmark, not an official promise that no later update can change the cap.
