What Is the Lanyard Ring on a Leatherman, and How Should You Use It?

By Freedom251 Team · · 10 min read

The small ring on a Leatherman multi-tool is a carry attachment point. It lets you connect the tool to a lanyard, carabiner, keychain, or sling, depending on the ring and model. Its job is to keep the tool accessible and reduce the chance of dropping or misplacing it during ordinary carry.

Leatherman uses several ring designs, and they are not interchangeable across every tool. Quick-release rings attach without replacing body screws, while two-screw versions require Torx T6 hardware. Identify your exact model before buying or installing an accessory.

What the little ring is for

A lanyard ring is an external carry feature, not an additional working tool. Once installed or attached, it provides a loop through which a carrying connector can pass. Leatherman describes its quick-release ring as a way to keep a multi-tool close at hand when clipped to a lanyard, carabiner, or sling. Its two-screw ring is described as a loop for a carabiner, keychain, or lanyard.

That makes the ring useful when a tool would otherwise sit loose in a pocket, pouch, vehicle, or tool bag. A tether can make the multi-tool easier to retrieve and can help prevent it from being left behind after use. Those are practical benefits inferred from the intended carry function; Leatherman does not publish a measured drop-prevention rate.

What it is not

The ring is not a replacement for a rated climbing, rescue, fall-arrest, or other life-safety attachment point. The official product information reviewed for these accessories does not state a working-load limit, breaking strength, or life-safety certification. Treat it as ordinary carry hardware, and keep the tool supported by a pocket, pouch, or hand when a fall could injure someone or damage equipment.

Leatherman lanyard-ring options

The accessory family is model-specific. The following comparison reflects the configurations listed on Leatherman’s product pages; stock can change, so confirm the current listing before ordering.

Accessory Attachment method Models listed by Leatherman Included hardware or material Typical connector
Quick-Release Lanyard Ring Quick-release attachment The current page’s Works with section lists Wave Plus. The product title also names Wave Plus, Wave Alpha, the Charge family, and Surge; verify the exact variant. 420 stainless steel or black-oxide versions Lanyard, carabiner, or sling
Two-Screw Lanyard Ring Two T6 screws ARC, Bond, Curl, and FREE T2 420 stainless steel; screws secure the loop Carabiner, keychain, or lanyard
FREE K-Series Lanyard Ring & Pocket Clip kit Two-screw installation FREE K2X and FREE K4X Lanyard ring, pocket clip, two T6 screws, and a Torx T6 wrench Lanyard or compatible clip-and-ring carry

Leatherman’s accessories collection also groups pocket clips and lanyard rings by tool family, including Wave, Charge, Surge, and Skeletool options. A ring that looks similar may still have a different screw pattern or body clearance, so appearance alone is not a reliable compatibility test.

How to identify the correct ring for your tool

  1. Read the model name. Look for the engraved name, packaging, purchase record, or the tool’s original documentation. Names such as Wave Plus, Charge, Surge, ARC, Bond, Curl, FREE T2, FREE K2X, and FREE K4X refer to different compatibility groups.
  2. Match the accessory family. Use the model list on the accessory page, not only a photograph. For the quick-release ring, note the difference between the page title and its current Works with list and confirm the exact variant with Leatherman if your tool is not explicitly named.
  3. Check the attachment style. A quick-release accessory is not the same as a loop that replaces body screws. A two-screw ring needs two suitable mounting points and T6 drivers.
  4. Confirm what is in the package. Some listings are for the ring alone, while the FREE K-Series kit includes a pocket clip, two T6 screws, and a T6 wrench.

At the time of the reviewed listings, some accessories were unavailable or backordered. Inventory is volatile, so an out-of-stock notice does not establish permanent discontinuation and an in-stock notice should not be treated as a guaranteed future supply.

Using a quick-release lanyard ring

A quick-release ring is intended for users who want to move the tool between a connector and the tool body without removing body screws. Follow the specific accessory instructions if they differ from this general procedure.

  1. Start with the tool closed. Close blades and other implements, and place the multi-tool on a stable surface. This reduces the chance of catching a finger on an exposed implement while you handle the attachment.
  2. Inspect the ring and attachment point. Check that the ring is the correct version for the model and that its release mechanism moves fully. Do not force a part that does not seat or release normally.
  3. Attach the carrying connector. Pass the lanyard loop through the ring, or clip a compatible carabiner or sling connector through it. Make sure the connector’s gate or closure returns to its closed position.
  4. Test access before carrying. Hold the connector and let the closed tool hang briefly over a safe surface. Confirm that the ring stays engaged and that the connector does not block the tool’s opening area.
  5. Set the carry orientation. Position the tool so the side you normally grasp is easy to reach. Keep the connector away from blades, bit drivers, or other implements that you may need to open.

The ring is a convenience attachment, so use a connector sized for ordinary carry rather than assuming that any large clip improves security. A closed gate is important: an open or partially latched connector can let the tool fall even when the ring itself is correctly fitted.

Installing a two-screw lanyard ring

Two-screw rings make a fixed attachment by replacing the specified screws in the tool body. Leatherman identifies the fasteners as T6 screws and describes the fit as precise when installed with the supplied hardware.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Verify the model. The researched two-screw ring is listed for ARC, Bond, Curl, and FREE T2. Do not substitute it on another model unless Leatherman explicitly lists that model.
  2. Gather the correct driver. Use a Torx T6 driver. If the accessory package includes a T6 wrench, use it rather than a larger or smaller bit that could damage the screw heads.
  3. Secure the tool. Close all implements and place the tool on a non-slip surface. Keep loose screws away from openings where they could be lost.
  4. Remove only the specified screws. Turn the driver steadily and keep it aligned with each head. Do not remove unrelated pivot or handle screws.
  5. Seat the ring. Place the loop over the mounting holes in the orientation shown by the accessory instructions. Start both supplied screws by hand so the threads engage evenly.
  6. Tighten evenly. Alternate between the two screws, applying firm hand pressure without forcing the driver. The supplied product information does not state a torque value, so do not claim a specific torque or use an impact driver.
  7. Check movement and clearance. Open and close the tool’s implements slowly. The ring should remain secure and should not interfere with handles, locks, blades, or pivots.
  8. Connect your carry hardware. Thread a lanyard or attach a closed carabiner or keychain only after confirming that both screws are seated and the ring does not wobble.

If a screw will not start easily, stop and realign the ring. Cross-threading, forcing the wrong screw, or using an incorrectly sized driver can damage the fastener or the tool body.

Installing and using the FREE K-Series kit

The FREE K-Series Lanyard Ring & Pocket Clip kit is listed for FREE K2X and FREE K4X. It combines a ring and a pocket clip and includes two T6 screws plus a Torx T6 wrench. That package is useful when you want to change between tethered carry and clipped pocket carry without sourcing separate hardware.

  1. Confirm that the tool is a FREE K2X or FREE K4X and that the kit’s parts match the mounting holes.
  2. Close the tool and work on a clean surface so the small screws and wrench remain visible.
  3. Choose the ring or clip position required by your carry method, following the kit’s orientation instructions.
  4. Install the two T6 screws with the supplied wrench, starting both threads before tightening either one fully.
  5. Open and close the tool and test the clip or ring for movement before attaching it to clothing, a bag, or a lanyard.

Because the kit contains more than a ring, account for the clip’s position when checking clearance. A clip or tether should not press against an implement or prevent the handles from closing.

Attaching a lanyard, carabiner, keychain, or sling

Lanyard

Pass the loop through the ring and pull the connector or knot back through the loop, as you would with a conventional tether point. Keep the knot or clasp outside the tool’s moving area. Choose cord and hardware intended for carrying a hand tool; the ring’s lack of a published load rating means a lanyard should not be used as fall protection.

Carabiner

Clip the carabiner through the ring, then close its gate completely. Before walking, tug lightly on the closed connector while holding the tool over a safe surface. Do not rely on a carabiner whose gate can be pushed open by nearby equipment or whose body prevents the multi-tool from hanging freely.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

Keychain

A key ring can pass through the loop on compatible two-screw accessories. Consider whether the tool’s weight and bulk will make your keys uncomfortable or cause the tool to strike other objects. A separate small carabiner can make removal easier than threading the tool directly onto a crowded key ring.

Sling

A sling connector can keep the tool close to a shoulder strap, bag, or similar carry system. Route the strap so it does not cross a blade path or snag on the handles. Check that the sling’s hardware closes fully after the tool is attached.

Positioning the tool for everyday carry

Attach the ring where the tool remains reachable but does not interfere with opening. Test the position with the tool closed, then simulate the first step of opening an implement. If the lanyard, clip, or carabiner presses against the handle, rotate the connector or change the carry side.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Keep blades and other implements closed while the tool is being attached or detached.
  • Use the ring for retention and access, not as a substitute for a pocket, sheath, or secure storage when the tool could fall onto people or equipment.
  • Prevent the connector from swinging into moving parts, locks, or pivots.
  • When handing the tool to another person, detach the connector if it could catch on clothing or machinery.

Inspection and maintenance

Leatherman’s accessory pages do not specify an inspection interval, so adopt a simple check based on how often and where you carry the tool. Inspect the ring and connector periodically, especially after a drop, heavy vibration, exposure to grit, or a noticeable change in fit.

  • Look for a bent or cracked ring, distorted connector, damaged gate, or worn loop.
  • Check that a quick-release mechanism fully engages and releases only when intended.
  • On two-screw installations, look for a gap, wobble, or screw head that is no longer seated.
  • Operate the tool’s handles and implements to ensure the attachment has not created interference.
  • Clean away dirt that could keep the connector or release mechanism from closing.

Replace a damaged ring or connector rather than improvising with wire, tape, or a mismatched screw. If the mounting threads or body are damaged, stop using the attachment and contact Leatherman for model-specific service guidance.

Troubleshooting common problems

The ring does not fit

Recheck the model name and accessory list. Wave, Charge, Surge, ARC, Bond, Curl, FREE T2, FREE K2X, and FREE K4X belong to different listings. A similar-looking handle does not prove compatibility.

The screws will not start

Use the supplied screws and a T6 driver, align both holes, and start the threads by hand. If resistance appears immediately, stop rather than forcing the screw; the ring may be reversed, misaligned, or intended for another model.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The ring or clip rubs on the handles

Remove the connector and open the tool slowly. Confirm that the ring is seated flush and that the correct screws were used. Persistent interference indicates a compatibility or orientation problem, not a reason to grind or bend the accessory.

The connector keeps opening

Inspect the carabiner, key ring, or sling hardware. Replace a connector whose gate does not close fully, and reposition it so nearby straps or tools cannot press the gate open.

Which design should you choose?

  • Choose a quick-release ring when you want to move the tool between a lanyard, carabiner, and sling with minimal handling and your exact model is listed for that accessory.
  • Choose a two-screw ring when a fixed loop suits your carry method and your tool is one of the listed ARC, Bond, Curl, or FREE T2 models.
  • Choose the FREE K-Series kit when you own a FREE K2X or FREE K4X and want both a lanyard ring and a pocket clip, along with the required screws and T6 wrench.
  • Choose neither until verified when the product page does not name your model. Waiting for confirmation is safer than modifying the tool to make an accessory fit.

Key points to remember

The ring is a practical carry loop. It can connect a Leatherman to a lanyard and, depending on the accessory, to a carabiner, keychain, or sling. Compatibility is model-specific; two-screw designs use T6 screws, and the FREE K-Series kit supplies a T6 wrench. Install the correct hardware, keep connectors closed, check for wear, and do not treat the ring as certified life-safety equipment.
