The Indy Autonomous Challenge (IAC) is a university-centered competition in which student teams develop software to pilot autonomous racecars. Organized by Energy Systems Network (ESN), it uses demanding racing scenarios to advance autonomous-vehicle and driver-assistance technology and give students hands-on STEM experience. It is a competition—not a consumer car model.
What is the Indy Autonomous Challenge?
ESN, an Indianapolis-based nonprofit and a branded initiative of the Central Indiana Corporate Partnership and CICP Foundation, organizes the IAC. The program brings universities and public-private partners together to develop automated-vehicle software for fully autonomous racecars. Students work on the software that controls the cars, rather than competing in ordinary, manually driven races.

The IAC presents racing as a demanding proving ground: autonomous systems may need to avoid unexpected obstacles at speed while maintaining control. The organization says its aims include advancing autonomous vehicles and advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS), addressing difficult edge cases, supporting safety and performance in motorsports and commercial transportation, and providing a platform for STEM learning. These are the IAC’s stated goals, not proof that its competition has independently improved road safety or produced commercial deployments.
Which cars does the competition use?
The current AV-24
The IAC identifies the AV-24 as its current racecar. It is an IAC-built vehicle retrofitted with automation hardware and controls, based on a modified Dallara Indy NXT chassis. Dallara’s Italian headquarters and its IndyCar factory in Speedway, Indiana, collaborated on the AV-24. IAC racecar information

The inaugural event’s IL-15
The 2021 inaugural competition used an earlier, modified Dallara IL-15—not the AV-24. According to the IAC’s historical media FAQ, Clemson University Deep Orange 12 students retrofitted that car with the hardware and controls needed for automation. The two generations should not be treated as the same vehicle. IAC historical media FAQ
How did the competition develop?
The 2021 inaugural event
The first IAC took place at Indianapolis Motor Speedway on October 23, 2021. The IAC overview reports that 21 universities from nine countries formed nine teams, and that TUM Autonomous Motorsport won. It describes a $1 million grand prize. The historical media FAQ, however, calls the event a $1.5 million prize competition. The pages do not explain the difference, so those figures should be attributed to their respective sources rather than treated as equivalent. IAC overview · IAC historical media FAQ

Head-to-head passing and Laguna Seca
The IAC later developed head-to-head passing competitions. In its announcement for the September 3, 2026 Laguna Seca event, the organization described it as the first road-course adaptation of that format. Two cars alternate attacker and defender roles over progressively more demanding rounds. The IAC’s media archive reports that UNIMORE Racing won with a pass into Laguna Seca’s Zanardi Corkscrew. These comments describe the organizers’ aims and the demands of that event.

Why use racing to develop autonomous driving?
Racing puts control software in a tightly defined but demanding environment. Cars must respond to track geometry, braking zones, changing conditions and, in passing formats, another moving vehicle. The IAC argues that this can help teams work on difficult edge cases relevant to autonomous vehicles and ADAS. That rationale explains the competition’s design; it does not mean performance on a racetrack alone establishes readiness for public roads.

- Support four 2600mAh 18650 batt (not included), two parallel and two series output currents are larger, and the motor power is stronger.
- On-board HY2120 + AOD514 lithium battery protection circuit, with anti-overcharge, anti-over-discharge, anti-over-current, and short-circuit protection functions.
- On-board FP5139 automatic buck-boost voltage regulator circuit can provide stable 5V voltage to Raspberry Pi.
- On-board 0.91-inch 128 × 32 resolution OLED, real-time display of car IP address, memory, power, etc.
- On-board AINA219 chip is convenient for real-time monitoring battery voltage and charging current.
- Car generation: the inaugural event used the modified IL-15; the current official car is the AV-24.
- Venue and track: note whether the event took place on an oval or road course.
- Competition format: distinguish time trials from head-to-head passing rounds.
- Event date and teams: participation and results belong to a particular event, not to the competition in general.
For example, TUM Autonomous Motorsport won the 2021 inaugural event, while UNIMORE Racing won the September 2026 Laguna Seca passing competition. Those are results from different events and formats, not a direct comparison of car speed or team performance.
