There is no single ideal image size for every website. The right image depends on the space it occupies in your layout, the pixel dimensions needed for that rendered space and display density, and the encoded file size that visitors must download. Measure the real slot, preserve its aspect ratio, provide responsive candidates and reserve layout space before the image loads.
What “image size” means on the web
People use “size” to mean three different things. Confusing them leads to blurry images, unnecessary downloads or layout shifts.
Rendered size: the CSS slot
Rendered size is the width and height an image occupies in the page layout, measured in CSS pixels. A hero may span a wide container, while a card thumbnail may be only one column wide. The same source file can therefore render at many different sizes.
Source dimensions: the pixel resource
Source dimensions are the actual pixels in the downloaded file, such as 800 × 600. The source needs enough pixels for its largest expected rendered use and display density, but sending a huge desktop file to every phone wastes bandwidth.

Encoded weight: the download cost
Encoded weight is the file size in bytes after compression. Two images with identical dimensions can have very different weights because of format, detail and compression settings. Optimize bytes as well as pixels.
How to choose dimensions for each component
Start with the component, not a universal number such as 1,200 pixels. Measure the container at the breakpoints your design actually uses, then create a small set of source widths around those measurements.
| Website role | What to measure | Image decision |
|---|---|---|
| Full-width hero | The content width at each breakpoint and whether the image is cropped | Use candidates covering the widest slot; use art direction if mobile needs a different composition |
| Multi-column card | Card width after gutters and column changes | Provide candidates near the card widths rather than one oversized desktop file |
| Constrained article image | The article column’s maximum width | Keep a consistent ratio and let the image shrink fluidly |
| Inline illustration or logo | The exact display box and required sharpness | Use an appropriately sized source; avoid rasterizing a simple graphic when a suitable vector is available |
There is no evidence-based universal recommendation that every site should use one fixed width or one crop ratio. Exact values depend on your template, breakpoints, subject and audience devices.
Keep images fluid without distortion
For ordinary responsive images, let the image shrink to its containing block while preserving its ratio:
img {
max-inline-size: 100%;
block-size: auto;
}
The familiar equivalents are max-width: 100% and height: auto. The first prevents overflow; the second prevents stretching.
When a fixed frame is required
Cards, avatars and galleries often have a fixed frame. Choose the behavior deliberately:

.card-image {

aspect-ratio: 4 / 3;
object-fit: cover;
object-position: 50% 40%;
}
Use picture when the composition itself must change between breakpoints—for example, a wide desktop landscape and a tighter mobile crop. Use srcset when the composition is the same and only resolution should vary.
Use srcset and sizes for responsive delivery
A width-descriptor srcset gives the browser several source widths. The sizes attribute tells it how wide the image will actually render, so it can select an efficient candidate before downloading.
<img
src="photo-800.jpg"
srcset="photo-400.jpg 400w, photo-800.jpg 800w, photo-1200.jpg 1200w"
sizes="(min-width: 66em) 33vw, (min-width: 44em) 50vw, 100vw"
width="1200"
height="800"
alt="Describe the image"
>
This example is only a pattern. Replace the breakpoints and candidate widths with measurements from your layout. The browser may choose a smaller file even on a wide viewport if the image sits in a narrow column. The largest candidate is not automatically required.
Writing an accurate sizes value
- Use the actual slot width, not the viewport width, when the image is inside a centered or multi-column container.
- Account for gutters, sidebars and breakpoint-specific column counts.
- Use
100vwonly when the image really spans the viewport at that condition. - Keep candidates sufficiently close to real slot widths; a very sparse set can force an unnecessarily large download.
When picture is the right tool
Use picture for art direction—different crops or even different source formats—rather than merely selecting a sharper version of the same composition. Keep the fallback img complete with dimensions and alternative text.
Always reserve the image’s layout space
Include intrinsic width and height attributes even when CSS makes the image responsive. They communicate the ratio before the file arrives, allowing the browser to reserve space and reducing avoidable cumulative layout movement. web.dev’s responsive-images guide states: “If you know your image’s dimensions, always include width and height attributes.”
For variants that share a ratio, use the same ratio in those hints. If a crop changes at a breakpoint, give each rendered frame an intentional aspect ratio and test the transition rather than allowing content to jump.

Balance sharpness, bytes and loading priority
Display density
A high-density display can show more source pixels within the same CSS slot. Responsive selection lets the browser account for rendered width and density without sending the largest asset to everyone. Oversupplying pixels increases transfer and decode work without guaranteeing visible improvement.
Compression and format
Choose an image format and quality level that preserve the subject at an acceptable byte cost. Inspect the resulting files, because dimensions alone do not predict weight. Keep a practical ceiling for each component and re-check it after editing or exporting.
Loading priority
Prioritize or preload only an image that is genuinely important to the initial render, such as the visible hero. Unnecessary prioritization can compete with stylesheets, fonts and other critical resources. Below-the-fold images should generally be allowed to load later according to the browser’s normal scheduling.
Why mobile needs tailored sources
web.dev’s “Serve responsive images” guidance says that serving desktop-sized images to mobile devices can use 2–4× more data than needed. The retrieved page does not state a publication year, so treat this as that page’s documented estimate, not a universal measurement for every site.
A repeatable sizing workflow
- Map every image role. List heroes, cards, article media, logos and decorative images separately.
- Measure rendered slots. Record widths, aspect ratios and breakpoint changes in CSS pixels, including gutters and side columns.
- Choose the crop behavior. Decide whether the complete image must remain visible (
contain) or whether filling the frame is more important (cover). - Create candidate sources. Generate a small set of widths around the measured slots and keep the ratio consistent where the composition is shared.
- Author responsive markup. Pair width descriptors with an accurate
sizes; usepicturefor alternate crops. - Add intrinsic dimensions and alt text. Reserve space and describe meaningful content; use empty alternative text for purely decorative images.
- Inspect real devices and network conditions. Check sharpness, crop, transfer size, decode time and layout stability at narrow and wide viewports.
- Revisit after layout changes. A new sidebar width or breakpoint can make an old
sizesvalue inaccurate.
Common mistakes and fixes
“Use 1,200 × 800 for everything”
Cause: treating a convenient export size as a rule. Fix: size each component from its measured slot and supply responsive candidates.
Images overflow or look stretched
Cause: a fixed width without a fluid constraint, or a forced height. Fix: use max-inline-size: 100% with block-size: auto, or define a frame with object-fit.

The browser downloads an unnecessarily large candidate
Cause: inaccurate or missing sizes, or candidates that skip the real slot width. Fix: describe the slot at each breakpoint and add candidates near those widths.
The subject is cut off on mobile
Cause: using one crop in frames with different shapes. Fix: use picture for art direction, or tune object-position when the same source remains appropriate.

Images are sharp but pages feel slow
Cause: excessive encoded weight, too many high-priority requests or desktop assets sent to phones. Fix: reduce candidate bytes, correct sizes, defer noncritical images and prioritize only the true above-the-fold asset.

FAQ
Should every website image use the same aspect ratio?
No. Use a shared ratio when a component family benefits from visual consistency; choose a different ratio or art-directed crop when the subject and frame require it.

Is a larger source always sharper?
Only until the source supplies enough pixels for the rendered slot and display density. Beyond that point, extra pixels mainly increase transfer and decoding work.
Can CSS alone make an image responsive?
CSS can constrain display size, but it cannot replace responsive source selection. Use CSS for fitting and markup such as srcset and sizes to avoid downloading an unnecessarily large file.
