The “Hotel Lobby” AI trend recreates Quavo and Takeoff’s “HOTEL LOBBY (Unc & Phew)” performance on A COLORS SHOW, placing different people or characters into its distinctive orange studio scene. It has prompted concern because the template reproduces the likeness and movements of Takeoff, who died in 2022, and raises questions about consent, image privacy, copyright and music rights.
What is the “Hotel Lobby” AI trend?
Despite the name, this is not a hotel or travel trend. “Hotel Lobby” refers to the song and performance used as a visual template: a bright orange backdrop, two performers sharing a hanging microphone, and synchronized movement. AI-generated videos swap in friends, celebrities, fictional characters or other subjects. The template is based on Quavo and Takeoff’s performance of “HOTEL LOBBY (Unc & Phew)” on A COLORS SHOW, as described by Tom’s Guide.

Consent and Takeoff’s likeness
Takeoff died in November 2022 at age 28. The trend reuses his likeness and movements, raising the question of whether it is appropriate to generate new depictions of someone who cannot consent to them. Some fans have criticized the videos.

Reactions are not uniform. Tom’s Guide reports that Quavo has welcomed renewed attention to the song as part of Takeoff’s legacy while acknowledging the emotions involved in AI-manipulated depictions of his late nephew. That response adds context, but it does not settle whether any particular recreation is acceptable.
Copyright and music rights
The template draws on an existing performance and song, so copyright and music rights are also concerns. The cited reporting raises those questions but does not determine the legality of any particular clip. It would be inaccurate to assume that every recreation is unlawful—or that every use is permitted.

Privacy when uploading photos
Some versions of the trend require users to upload photos. That creates a separate privacy issue: a service may process the images and prompts itself or send them to a third-party model. The terms and safeguards depend on the specific service, so one provider’s disclosures should not be treated as a guarantee about other AI tools.

What should creators consider before making one?
- Get permission. Ask before using someone else’s photo, especially for a public post or a sensitive depiction.
- Check the service’s terms. Review its privacy policy and retention practices, including whether uploaded media may be sent to a third party.
- Consider the source material. A person’s likeness is not the only issue; the original song and performance may raise separate rights questions.
- Make the context clear. Don’t present an AI recreation as authentic footage.
For example, Hotel Lobby AI’s privacy policy says the service processes selected photos and prompts to create a video, and that the minimum necessary media and prompt may be sent to a third-party video model. It tells users: “Do not upload photos of another person without permission.” The policy also says temporary source media is scheduled for deletion after the processing window. These are statements about that service, not assurances about other providers.
