The Galaxy Z Fold Taskbar is a built-in dock along the bottom of the unfolded inner display. It keeps favorite apps available while another app is open, can show recent apps, and lets you drag icons into Multi window positions or save app pairs for one-tap launching. It is a software feature of supported Galaxy Z Fold phones, not a separate accessory.
What the Galaxy Z Fold Taskbar does
When Taskbar is enabled and an app or window is open on the phone’s unfolded main display, a PC-style strip appears along the lower edge. The strip contains app icons that you can tap to switch to an app or launch it without returning to the Home screen.

The dock is designed around the large inner screen and multitasking. Its most useful action is drag-and-drop: press and hold an icon, then move it to a placement zone on the screen to start Multi window. You can place an app at the top, bottom, left, right or center drop zone, depending on the layout you want to create.
Samsung’s current Galaxy Z Fold implementation provides eight Taskbar positions in total: six for apps you select and two for recent apps when recent-app display is enabled. The exact appearance and menu wording can differ by Fold model and One UI version, but the basic workflow is the same.

What appears in the Taskbar
Selected apps come from the Home-screen Favourites bar
The persistent icons are not an independent Taskbar list. They mirror the apps in the Home screen’s Favourites bar. Add an app to that favorites area and it becomes available in the Taskbar; remove it from the favorites area and it is removed from the persistent Taskbar selection.
This link means you can organize the dock from the Home screen rather than searching through a separate Taskbar editor. If you want a different set of apps available for one-handed switching on the inner display, edit the Favourites bar first.
Recent apps are optional
Recent apps occupy two additional positions in the current Fold layout when the relevant control is enabled. Because these icons represent recently used apps, they can change as your app activity changes. If you prefer a stable strip containing only your chosen apps, turn recent-app display off where that control is available.

How to turn on the Taskbar
On supported Galaxy Z Fold models, Samsung says the feature is enabled by default. If it has been switched off, use this path on the phone:
- Open Settings.
- Tap Display.
- Tap Taskbar.
- Turn on the main Taskbar switch.
Now unfold the phone, open an app on the inner display and look along the bottom edge. The Taskbar is meant to appear while an app or window is open, rather than as a permanent strip on every Home-screen view.
Choose whether recent apps appear
Inside the Taskbar settings, look for Show recent apps or a similarly named suggested-app control. The available label depends on the model and One UI release. Enable it if you want the two recent-app positions; disable it for a favorites-focused dock. If your software shows a choice for how many suggested apps appear, use that control to set the available recent-app display.

How to customize the app icons
Add an app
- Go to the Home screen.
- Press and hold the app you want to keep in the dock.
- Drag it into the Home screen’s Favourites bar.
- Unfold the phone and open an app to see the updated Taskbar selection.
The app is now part of the persistent selected-app group. You do not need to add it a second time from the Taskbar settings.

Remove or replace an app
Press and hold an icon in the Home screen’s Favourites bar and drag it out of that area, or use the available Remove command. The corresponding persistent icon disappears from the Taskbar. Replace it by placing another app in the Favourites bar.
Because the Taskbar mirrors this bar, changes affect both locations. This is useful when you want one consistent set of favorite apps on the Home screen and the unfolded-display dock.
How to switch between apps from the Taskbar
With an app open on the unfolded display, tap any Taskbar icon. If the app is already running, the phone switches to it. If it is not open, the phone launches it. This gives you a faster route between two apps than returning to the Home screen and opening the app drawer.
The Taskbar remains most useful when you leave one app visible and bring another into a second window. For that workflow, use the drag-and-drop behavior rather than simply tapping.

- Open the first app on the unfolded inner display.
- Press and hold the second app’s icon in the Taskbar.
- Drag the icon toward the screen edge or center until a placement zone appears.
- Move the icon into the top, bottom, left, right or center zone that matches the layout you want.
- Release the icon to start Multi window.
The drop zone determines where the second app is placed. A top or bottom zone is suited to a vertical arrangement; a left or right zone creates a side-by-side arrangement when the layout allows it. The center zone can be used for the placement offered by the current Multi window interface.

If the icon does not move, begin the gesture directly on the Taskbar icon and hold it briefly before dragging. A quick tap only switches or launches the app; it does not begin the Multi window gesture.
How to save an app pair to the Taskbar
After arranging two apps in split screen, you can save that combination so both open together later.
- Place the two apps in split screen using the Taskbar drag-and-drop method or another Multi window method.
- Tap the divider between the two app windows.
- Tap the App pair star option.
- Choose to save the pair to the Taskbar.
The saved pair appears as a combined shortcut. Tap it later and the phone opens both apps together in the saved arrangement. This is different from saving two individual apps: the pair represents a repeatable two-app workflow.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf the star option is missing, first confirm that both apps are actually in split screen and that you tapped the divider rather than an app’s own toolbar. Menu names and the exact divider controls can vary with the One UI version.
Showing and hiding the Taskbar
Some Fold software lets the dock be hidden until you call it up. On Fold4 instructions that use swipe navigation, Samsung provides a Show and hide with touch and hold control for the lower Taskbar area. When that option is present, press and hold near the bottom edge to reveal or hide the strip.
Visibility controls are model- and software-dependent. If you do not see the touch-and-hold option, use the Taskbar switch in Settings > Display > Taskbar and the navigation settings offered on your particular device rather than assuming another model’s menu is identical.

Can you use the Taskbar on the cover screen?
No. Samsung’s support wording states that the Taskbar is not compatible with the cover screen and cannot be enabled or disabled from that screen. The feature is intended for the unfolded inner display.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Taskbar support in Flex mode
Samsung supports the Taskbar in Flex mode on Galaxy Z Fold devices. Flex mode changes how the phone is positioned and how supported apps use the two halves of the unfolded screen, while the Taskbar remains part of the inner-display multitasking experience.
Because Flex-mode behavior and controls can change between models and One UI releases, use the labels shown on your phone. A setting or icon described for one Fold generation may be placed differently on another even though the Taskbar’s core functions remain available.
Why the Taskbar may not be showing
The Taskbar switch is off
Open Settings > Display > Taskbar and check the main switch. Supported models normally have the feature on by default, so an unexpected absence often means it was disabled.

No app is open on the inner display
The Taskbar appears while an app or window is open on the unfolded main display. Open an app there before judging whether the dock is working.
Best Value
You are looking at a model-specific visibility behavior
Some software hides the strip until you interact with the lower edge. If your Fold uses swipe navigation and exposes Show and hide with touch and hold, press and hold the lower Taskbar area. If that control is not present, the available behavior is determined by your model and One UI version.
Recent icons are missing
Recent apps are optional. In Taskbar settings, check Show recent apps or the suggested-app control. Turning that setting off leaves the selected-app portion without the changing recent-app positions.
The wrong persistent apps are displayed
Edit the Home screen’s Favourites bar. The persistent Taskbar icons mirror that bar, so changing the favorites there changes the selected-app group in the dock.
A split-screen gesture does not work
Use a press-and-hold gesture on the icon, then drag it to a visible placement zone. A tap performs a normal app switch or launch. For a reusable combination, finish the split-screen layout first, tap its divider and use the app-pair star to save it.
Choosing the setup that fits your workflow
| Setup choice | What it provides | Best when |
|---|---|---|
| Favorites only | A stable set of selected apps from the Home-screen Favourites bar | You want predictable icons that do not change as you use other apps |
| Favorites plus recent apps | Selected apps together with up to two changing recent-app positions | You switch frequently among apps that are not part of your permanent favorites |
| Individual app shortcuts | One app launches or comes to the front when tapped | You need quick single-app access |
| Drag-and-drop Multi window | An app is placed in a top, bottom, left, right or center zone | You want to begin a two-window layout without leaving the current app |
| Saved app pair | Two apps open together from one Taskbar shortcut | You repeat the same two-app combination |
How the Fold Taskbar differs from Samsung’s tablet Taskbar
The concepts are similar, but the slot count is not. Samsung’s published figures give Galaxy Z Fold models eight total positions—six selected apps and two recent apps—while Samsung tablets have four Taskbar app slots. Do not apply tablet instructions or capacity assumptions to a Fold phone.
For a Fold, also check whether the instructions refer to the inner display, the cover screen or a particular One UI release. The cover-screen limitation and model-specific visibility controls are especially important when following a guide written for another Galaxy device.
What the Taskbar is—and what it is not
- It is software built into supported Galaxy Z Fold devices.
- It is a dock for the unfolded inner display, centered on fast switching and Multi window.
- Its persistent app list is tied to the Home-screen Favourites bar.
- Its recent-app section is optional and can change with app use.
- It can launch individual apps, place apps into Multi window and store app pairs.
- It does not add a Taskbar to the cover screen.
No case, stylus, screen protector or other accessory enables the feature. The relevant requirements are a supported Galaxy Z Fold model and the Taskbar controls provided by its installed One UI version.
