The FREELANDER 8 is the first strategic model from FREELANDER, a distinct brand jointly developed by Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) and Chery. JLR owns the brand and leads its design; Chery contributes vehicle technology and supply-chain capability. China production began in 2026, and the UAE is the brand’s first announced international market.
What is the FREELANDER 8?
FREELANDER 8 is a premium intelligent all-terrain SUV and the first strategic nameplate of the revived FREELANDER brand. It is not presented by its makers as simply a conventional Land Rover or an existing Chery model: it belongs to a new brand developed by the two companies.

The nameplate was shown in international left-hand-drive form at FREELANDER’s global brand launch in Abu Dhabi on 29 September 2026. Chery Group’s 3 October 2026 announcement describes the vehicle as a new-energy vehicle, but does not provide a complete powertrain specification for every market.
How is the Chery-JLR brand structured?
JLR owns FREELANDER and leads design
At the brand launch, the partners described JLR as the owner of the FREELANDER brand, with a dedicated design hub leading design. JLR and Chery call the vehicles jointly developed. In June 2024, JLR described FREELANDER as a distinct growth system, separate from both Chery’s existing portfolio and JLR’s modern luxury House of Brands.

Chery supplies technology and industrial capability
Chery provides intelligent technology and supply-chain support. The partners’ 19 June 2024 letter of intent proposed that Chery Jaguar Land Rover (CJLR), their joint venture, produce an electric-vehicle portfolio under the FREELANDER name. That original plan specified Chery EV architecture and manufacturing in Changshu, China. It also envisaged collaborative design, a distinct retail network in China and eventual exports.
That 2024 plan explains the intended roles and production arrangement; it should not be mistaken for a full current vehicle specification or proof that every part of the launch arrangement remains unchanged. The public descriptions at the 2026 launch emphasize JLR’s brand ownership and design role alongside Chery’s technology and supply-chain contributions.

The original 2024 proposal described an electric-vehicle portfolio based on Chery EV architecture. Current launch material uses broader new-energy-vehicle language. The announcements available by 3 October 2026 do not establish a complete market-specific powertrain lineup, battery capacity, electric range, charging performance, final dimensions or retail prices.

Where is it being made and sold?
Production in China
On 4 August 2026, Chery Group reported that the first China mass-production FREELANDER 8 vehicles had rolled off the Changshu assembly line and that production for international markets was also underway. This confirms a production milestone, not a customer-delivery date.
International launch and UAE dealers
FREELANDER presented an international left-hand-drive version at its Abu Dhabi launch on 29 September 2026 and identified the UAE as its first international market. The company named Al Tayer Motors for Dubai and the Northern Emirates, and Premier Motors for Abu Dhabi.

The company says the broader rollout will start in left-hand-drive markets, then expand to right-hand-drive and EU-specification markets. It has not established a firm customer-delivery schedule or confirmed availability in other specific countries in the announcements described here.

Chery Group reported more than 1,000 test vehicles, including over 200 vehicles dedicated to all-terrain durability testing. It also reported 2.15 million kilometres of all-terrain durability tests. These are manufacturer-reported validation figures, not independent test results or a substitute for published safety ratings and third-party comparisons.

Is the FREELANDER 8 a Chery or a Land Rover?
The most accurate description is a FREELANDER-brand SUV jointly developed by JLR and Chery. JLR owns the brand and leads design, while Chery contributes technology and supply-chain capability. CJLR was named as the production venture in the partners’ 2024 plan. Calling it solely a Chery or a conventional Land Rover would omit the distinct brand structure the companies have described.
What remains unknown?
As of the 3 October 2026 Chery Group announcement, the public material described here does not establish retail prices, customer delivery dates, a complete powertrain and battery specification, range, charging performance, dimensions, crash-test results or country-by-country availability beyond the UAE launch information. Those details matter when comparing the FREELANDER 8 with another SUV; comparisons should use the same market and trim and account for powertrain, usable range, charging, seating and cargo space, safety ratings, off-road hardware, dealer and service coverage, warranty and delivered price.
At the Abu Dhabi launch, FREELANDER International CEO Lucia Mao framed the brand’s positioning as “British soul. Chinese intelligence,” describing it as the company’s interpretation of “Beyond the Legend.” That is brand language, not an independent assessment of the vehicle.
