The Federal Reserve’s balance sheet is a consolidated statement of what the central bank owns, what it owes, and its reported capital. Its assets are led by U.S. Treasury and mortgage-backed securities, while its liabilities include Federal Reserve notes (currency), commercial-bank reserve balances, Treasury deposits and reverse repurchase agreements. The balance sheet matters because changes in those items alter the supply and distribution of reserves and help transmit monetary policy to financial markets and the wider economy. Its size alone, however, is not a complete measure of whether policy is tight or easy, nor a mechanical forecast of inflation, interest rates or employment.
What the balance sheet contains
Like any balance sheet, the Federal Reserve’s statement has two linked sides: assets and liabilities plus capital. Every transaction changes at least one item on each side, so the accounting identity remains in balance.

Assets: what the Fed owns or is owed
- Securities held outright: Treasury securities and federal agency mortgage-backed securities (MBS) make up almost all of the portfolio. Treasury holdings are reported at face value; MBS are reported at current face value, meaning the remaining principal balance. Unamortized premiums and discounts are shown separately.
- Loans: Credit extended through facilities such as primary credit appears as an asset because the borrowing institution owes the Federal Reserve repayment.
- Other assets: The statement also includes items such as unamortized premiums, foreign-currency assets and other financial and operational balances.
The Fed may also report securities that it holds in custody for foreign official accounts. Those custody holdings are memorandum information, not securities owned by the Federal Reserve, and should not be added to its asset portfolio.

- Currency in circulation: Federal Reserve notes held by the public are a liability of the Federal Reserve System.
- Reserve balances: Deposits that eligible banks keep in accounts at Federal Reserve Banks. They are the principal settlement asset for the banking system and a central operating concern for monetary policy.
- Treasury and other deposits: The U.S. Treasury’s account at the Fed, known as the Treasury General Account (TGA), and other official deposits are liabilities even though they are not bank reserves.
- Reverse repurchase agreements: In a reverse repo, the Fed temporarily takes cash from a counterparty and provides a security as collateral, creating a liability that is repaid when the transaction matures.
- Other liabilities and capital: Remaining obligations and the Federal Reserve’s capital complete the statement.
Because currency, reserves, Treasury deposits and reverse repos can move independently, two balance sheets with the same total assets can have different effects on money-market conditions.

The latest weekly snapshot: week ended October 7, 2026
The Federal Reserve’s H.4.1 release dated October 8, 2026 reports both weekly averages and a Wednesday condition statement. The figures below are rounded conversions from millions of dollars to make them easier to read; the release’s tables are the authority for exact amounts.
| H.4.1 item | Reported amount | Observation and definition |
|---|---|---|
| Reserve Bank credit | About $6.696 trillion | Weekly average of daily figures; the Wednesday, October 7 amount was about $6.700 trillion. |
| Securities held outright | About $6.465 trillion | Fed-owned securities; this is not the same measure as consolidated total assets. |
| U.S. Treasury securities | About $4.565 trillion | Face-value amount within securities held outright. |
| Mortgage-backed securities | About $1.898 trillion | Current-face amount, representing remaining principal. |
| Federal agency debt securities | About $2.347 billion | Separate from Treasury and MBS holdings. |
| Loans | About $7.744 billion | Primary credit accounted for about $7.701 billion. |
| Currency in circulation | About $2.484 trillion | Federal Reserve notes held outside the Reserve Banks. |
| Reverse repurchase agreements | About $329.526 billion | Liabilities created by temporary reverse-repo transactions. |
| Deposits other than reserve balances | About $1.130 trillion | Includes the TGA at about $880.253 billion. |
| Reserve balances at Federal Reserve Banks | About $3.030 trillion | Bank deposits used for settlement and liquidity management. |
“Reserve Bank credit” is a specific H.4.1 measure of assets supplied by the Reserve Banks; it is not interchangeable with total assets in the consolidated condition statement. A weekly average also cannot be compared directly with a single Wednesday observation. Always label the date, column and accounting measure when citing a number.
How a balance-sheet transaction works
Asset purchases
When the Federal Reserve buys a Treasury security from a dealer or another eligible seller, the Fed records the security as an asset. Settlement generally credits the seller’s bank with a reserve balance, increasing the Fed’s liabilities. If the seller is a nonbank, its bank receives the reserve while the seller receives a deposit. The transaction therefore changes both the composition and quantity of financial claims in the system.

Runoff and sales
When a Treasury security matures and the Fed does not reinvest the principal, the Treasury pays the Fed. The payment ultimately drains reserves or another Fed liability from the banking system, and the Fed’s securities holdings decline. An outright sale has a similar balance-sheet direction but also changes market supply immediately. The result depends on which liability absorbs the payment and on the behavior of banks, money-market funds, the Treasury and other counterparties.
Liability-side movements without a change in securities
Currency demand can rise as households and businesses hold more notes. The Treasury can move cash into or out of its TGA. Reverse-repo usage can expand or contract as money-market funds choose between the Fed’s facility, Treasury bills and private instruments. These shifts can change reserve availability even when the securities portfolio is unchanged.
Why the balance sheet matters for monetary policy
Congress assigns the Federal Reserve goals of maximum employment and stable prices. The Board also emphasizes that financial stability and smoothly functioning markets help those goals be transmitted to the economy. The balance sheet is one channel in that transmission, alongside the policy interest rate and communication about the expected path of policy.

Reserves and short-term interest rates
Reserve balances are the banking system’s deposits at the central bank. In an “ample-reserves” operating framework, the Fed uses administered rates and a sufficiently large reserve supply to keep overnight rates near its target range. If reserves become scarce, banks may bid more aggressively for funding and money-market rates can become volatile. If reserves are abundant, small day-to-day changes generally have less effect on the marginal price of reserves.

Large-scale purchases remove Treasury and agency MBS duration and credit exposure from private portfolios and replace them with highly liquid reserve balances. That can affect term premiums, market liquidity and financing conditions. The size and maturity distribution of holdings, the type of liability created, and conditions in private markets all matter; the headline asset total does not capture them by itself.
Why total assets are not a policy scorecard
A larger balance sheet is not automatically stimulative, and a smaller one is not automatically restrictive. The same total can coexist with different levels of reserves, currency, TGA deposits and reverse repos. Inflation, employment and borrowing costs also respond to the policy rate, fiscal conditions, global markets, bank behavior and expectations. Use the balance sheet as one part of a broader policy assessment rather than as a stand-alone forecast.

From quantitative tightening to reserve management
Runoff from June 2022 through October 2025
Federal Reserve securities holdings fell by more than $2.2 trillion from June 2022 through October 31, 2025 as principal payments were allowed to reduce the portfolio. On October 29, 2025, the Federal Open Market Committee announced that aggregate securities runoff would end.
The December 1, 2025 operating change
Beginning December 1, the Fed rolled over Treasury principal payments at auction and reinvested agency-security principal payments into Treasury bills. That stopped the planned contraction of the securities portfolio.

Purchases to maintain ample reserves
From December 10, 2025 onward, the FOMC said reserve balances had declined to ample levels and authorized purchases of shorter-term Treasury securities as needed. The purpose is reserve management: accommodating trend growth in demand for Federal Reserve liabilities and seasonal fluctuations, while adjusting purchase amounts for projected reserve supply and market conditions. This objective differs from the earlier runoff program, which was designed to reduce holdings subject to redemption caps.

Putting the March 2026 report in context
The Board’s May 2026 Balance Sheet Developments report provides a dated quarterly comparison rather than a current weekly total. On March 25, 2026, it reported:
| Measure | March 25, 2026 | Comparison or qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Total assets | $6.657 trillion | $49 billion higher than $6.608 trillion on September 24, 2025. |
| Total liabilities | $6.611 trillion | Reported in the consolidated condition statement. |
| Capital | $46 billion | The difference between reported assets and liabilities. |
| Assets as a share of nominal GDP | 21 percent | Board calculation combining weekly asset data with quarterly GDP; it is not an October 2026 ratio. |
These values should not be substituted for the October 7 H.4.1 Wednesday figure. They answer a different question and use a different date and presentation.
What the Fed’s accounting losses mean
The May 2026 report said consolidated net income had remained negative on net since September 2025 and that the reported deferred asset reached $244 billion on March 25, 2026. A deferred asset records the future earnings the Federal Reserve would need before remitting net earnings to the Treasury again; it is not the same as a commercial bank’s inability to pay its bills.
The Board explicitly stated that the deferred asset and negative net income did not impair the Federal Reserve’s ability to conduct monetary policy or meet its financial obligations. Interest income on securities can be lower than the interest the Fed pays on reserve balances and other liabilities, especially when short-term rates are elevated. That accounting result does not by itself determine the policy stance or prevent the Fed from changing rates, buying securities or allowing assets to mature.
How to read an H.4.1 release without misreading it
- Start with the date. Confirm the release date and whether the column is a weekly average or the Wednesday condition statement.
- Identify the measure. Decide whether you need reserve-bank credit, total assets, securities held outright, reserve balances or another line item. Do not treat those labels as synonyms.
- Separate own holdings from custody assets. Only securities held outright belong in the Fed’s asset portfolio; custody securities are reported for information.
- Read both sides. Pair securities and loans with reserve balances, currency, the TGA and reverse repos to see how funding and liquidity changed.
- Check valuation conventions. Treasury securities use face value, while MBS use current face value; premiums and discounts are separate entries.
- Compare like with like. Use the same observation type, date range, units and accounting definition when calculating a change.
- Pair the data with policy communications. Read the FOMC’s policy decision and the Board’s balance-sheet explanation before inferring whether a move is tightening, easing or routine reserve management.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- “The balance sheet is $6.7 trillion, so that is total assets.” The October 7 figure is Wednesday reserve-bank credit. Total assets in another statement can differ.
- “Every asset purchase prints money.” Purchases create reserve liabilities through settlement, but the effects on deposits, spending and prices depend on how banks, sellers and other markets respond.
- “Runoff ended, so the balance sheet is fixed.” Reserve-management purchases, currency demand, Treasury cash movements and reverse repos can still change the weekly totals.
- “A deferred asset means the Fed is insolvent.” The Board says the accounting item did not limit policy operations or payment of obligations.
- “A larger balance sheet guarantees inflation.” The total is not a mechanical predictor. Policy rates, expectations, fiscal policy, supply conditions and global developments also matter.
Where to find the latest figures
The weekly H.4.1 release is the primary public source for the Federal Reserve’s balance-sheet categories. It provides the latest reserve-bank-credit, securities, loan, currency, reverse-repo, Treasury-deposit and reserve-balance figures, with both weekly-average and Wednesday columns. For interpretation and historical context, the Board’s Balance Sheet Developments reports explain runoff, the transition to reserve management and accounting items such as the deferred asset. Check the publication date each time you use a number, because the “latest” weekly observation changes and the different tables are not interchangeable.
The practical takeaway
The Federal Reserve’s balance sheet is best understood as a map of the central bank’s financial relationships: securities and loans on one side, and currency, reserves, Treasury deposits, reverse repos and other obligations on the other. Its operations influence how much liquidity is available, which instruments the private sector holds and how smoothly monetary policy reaches markets. The October 2025 end of runoff and the December 2025 move to purchases aimed at maintaining ample reserves changed the operating objective without making the balance sheet irrelevant. To interpret any new figure, use the date, definition and observation type, then examine both assets and liabilities and read the result alongside the FOMC’s stated policy.
