The endurance running hypothesis proposes that natural selection favored sustained running in the genus Homo roughly 2 million years ago. Dennis M. Bramble and Daniel E. Lieberman argued in a 2004 Nature review that a linked package of anatomical and physiological traits made humans unusually capable of prolonged running. The ability may have helped early humans reach carcasses, compete with carnivores, travel between resources and, in some settings, exhaust prey through persistence hunting. Human endurance-running ability is well supported; the claim that persistence hunting was the principal force that created it remains debated.
What the hypothesis actually claims
This is a functional-evolution hypothesis, not a claim that running alone explains humanity or that every early human ran every day. It proposes that sustained running became an important selective advantage in early Homo, probably beginning about 2 million years ago. Selection would have favored bodies that could maintain movement for long periods, especially in hot, open environments where access to meat or widely scattered resources rewarded endurance.

“Endurance running” means maintaining a running gait over extended time, often with walking breaks. It does not mean modern marathon training, a particular weekly mileage or superior sprint speed. Humans are comparatively poor accelerators and sprinters next to many quadrupedal mammals, yet can continue moving for much longer than their sprinting performance would suggest.
Bramble and Lieberman’s 2004 conclusion was that “the fossil evidence of these features suggests that endurance running is a derived capability of the genus Homo, originating about 2 million years ago, and may have been instrumental in the evolution of the human body form.” Their proposal links the appearance of a human-like body plan to the practical benefits of sustained locomotion.

A 2007 review by Lieberman and Bramble similarly stated that human endurance-running capabilities “probably emerged sometime around 2 million years ago in order to help meat-eating hominids compete with other carnivores.” The wording matters: “probably” and “may” describe an evolutionary model, not a demonstrated single cause.
Why humans are unusual endurance runners
Supporters do not rely on one bone or one physiological trick. They point to a correlated package of traits that work together. The fossil record can reveal many skeletal features, while living humans and comparative physiology show how those features affect running.
Long lower limbs and economical stride mechanics
Early Homo fossils show a more human-like body plan than earlier ape-sized forms, including relatively long lower limbs. Longer legs can increase stride length and help make a given travel speed less costly when the rest of the body is organized for stable, repeated strides. The argument is not that long legs automatically prove running selection; rather, their appearance alongside other running-related features is part of the cumulative case.

Elastic tendons return energy
Tendons, including the Achilles tendon, can stretch and then release stored elastic energy as the foot leaves the ground. This recycling reduces the muscular work required for each repeated stride. Elastic energy storage is useful for sustained running because a small saving per step becomes substantial over thousands of steps. Tendons alone are not a diagnostic fossil signal, but their function helps explain why the human musculoskeletal arrangement can support prolonged running.
Stabilizing the body in flight
Running differs from walking because each stride includes a period when both feet are off the ground. Humans therefore need control systems that keep the head, trunk, pelvis and legs aligned while the body is airborne and then absorb the next landing. The hypothesis treats human body-stabilizing structures and muscles as an integrated running system rather than isolated adaptations.

Cooling through sweating and reduced body hair
Humans have extensive eccrine sweating and relatively little body hair compared with other primates. Evaporation can remove considerable heat, and running creates airflow that improves that cooling. A human who cannot sprint as fast as a four-legged animal may nevertheless continue moving after the animal has accumulated dangerous heat. This thermoregulatory advantage is especially relevant in hot conditions and is one reason the hypothesis emphasizes sustained pursuit rather than a short chase.
Comparative performance
When human endurance is compared with that of other mammals, humans can perform favorably over long durations even though they are not outstanding sprinters. The proposed evolutionary signal is the combination of endurance, heat dissipation and mechanical economy. No single performance test can identify what selection acted on in the Pleistocene, but the modern phenotype is consistent with the anatomical package seen in Homo.
Three ways endurance could have paid off
Running need not have had one exclusive use. The hypothesis includes several routes by which endurance could have increased survival or food intake.
Persistence hunting
In persistence hunting, a hunter repeatedly runs and walks while keeping prey moving. The hunter uses tracking, navigation and knowledge of the animal’s behavior to prevent it from resting safely. In heat, the animal may be unable to cool itself while running because many large mammals rely mainly on respiratory cooling rather than whole-body sweating. Eventually heat stress, dehydration or fatigue can make the animal vulnerable.
Modern ethnographic accounts document this behavior in some hunter-gatherer contexts, and reviews commonly report hunts involving approximately 15–30 kilometers of alternating walking and slow running. That distance describes modern reported hunts, not a measured average for early Homo. There is no established population-level figure for how often Pleistocene humans used persistence hunting.

Reaching and defending carcasses
Running could have helped hominins arrive at a carcass before competing carnivores or reach meat after scavengers had been detected. Speed over a long distance would also help a group defend a carcass once it arrived. This route requires neither a successful chase hunt nor specialized weapons, making it compatible with periods when humans obtained meat through scavenging or opportunistic hunting.

Sustained movement could improve travel between water, sleeping sites, plant foods and animal resources. Endurance traits may therefore have been useful even when no prey was pursued. A capacity selected for general mobility could later support hunting, scavenging and social activities in different ecological settings.
What evidence supports the model?
| Evidence domain | What proponents observe | What it can and cannot establish |
|---|---|---|
| Human performance | Humans sustain movement for long periods and can dissipate heat while running. | Supports unusual endurance capacity; does not identify the exact prehistoric behavior that selected it. |
| Fossil anatomy | Early Homo has relatively long lower limbs and a more human-like, stable body plan. | Shows when relevant body features appear; cannot reveal how often an individual ran. |
| Elastic tissues | Tendons can store and return energy during repeated strides. | Explains running economy in living humans; soft tissues are rarely preserved directly in fossils. |
| Thermoregulation | Extensive eccrine sweating and reduced body hair support evaporative cooling. | Provides a plausible endurance advantage, especially in heat; the fossil timing of some soft-tissue traits is difficult to establish precisely. |
| Ethnography | Some recent hunter-gatherers use prolonged pursuit. | Demonstrates that the strategy is feasible; it is not a direct record of Pleistocene frequency or importance. |
| Archaeology | Some sites show meat acquisition and carcass processing. | Can indicate access to meat, but usually cannot distinguish persistence hunting from ambush, tracking, scavenging or other methods. |
The strongest inference comes from the package. A long-legged body, elastic energy return, stabilization and heat loss all make more sense together as adaptations that improve prolonged running. Still, a package demonstrates functional compatibility, not a complete historical narrative.
When did humans become endurance runners?
The foundational estimate is about 2 million years ago, in the early Homo lineage. Bramble and Lieberman used the fossil appearance of running-related features to place the emergence of derived endurance-running capability around that time. Lieberman and Bramble repeated a similar estimate in 2007, connecting it to competition with carnivores over meat.
“About 2 million years ago” is an approximate evolutionary window, not a date at which a new species suddenly acquired marathon ability. Traits accumulate, populations vary and fossils provide an incomplete record. Some components may have existed earlier or reached their modern combination later. The evidence supports a broad timing estimate for a derived capability, not a precise first run.

Did persistence hunting make us human?
That wording overstates the evidence. Persistence hunting could have contributed to selection for endurance, but human evolution involved many interacting pressures, including walking, climbing, dietary change, cooperation, tool use, climate variability and social learning. Endurance running is best treated as one possible component of a broader shift in hominin ecology.
The key distinction is between capacity and cause:
- High confidence: Humans possess an unusual combination of prolonged-running ability and heat-dissipation adaptations.
- Moderate confidence: These capabilities evolved in Homo around 2 million years ago and were useful for several forms of travel and meat acquisition.
- Lower confidence: Persistence hunting was common enough, widespread enough or energetically profitable enough to be the major driver of those adaptations.
Modern persistence hunts also require tracking, ecological knowledge and decisions about when to run or stop. A fossil cannot show those skills directly. Nor can an archaeological assemblage usually identify whether meat came from a prolonged pursuit, a close ambush, a carcass found after a predator abandoned it or another strategy.
Why the persistence-hunting explanation remains debated
There is no direct fossil record of a chase
Bones can preserve anatomy, but they do not record an early hunter alternating running and walking behind a particular animal. Archaeological evidence of cut marks or carcass transport demonstrates meat use without revealing the pursuit method.
Modern examples may not represent the Pleistocene
Ethnographic observations show what humans can do under particular ecological and cultural conditions. They do not establish how frequently early Homo performed the same behavior, whether the necessary tracking traditions existed, or whether the practice was equally effective in every habitat.

A pursuit must yield more usable energy than it costs, including the opportunity cost of searching, tracking and protecting the kill. Water availability, temperature, prey size, terrain, group cooperation and the presence of carnivores all affect the balance. A strategy that works in a hot, open landscape may be poor in woodland or during cooler seasons.
Best Value
Running may have had several benefits
If the same anatomy improves travel, scavenging, carcass defense and thermoregulation, persistence hunting is not necessary to explain every trait. This alternative does not disprove hunting; it widens the set of plausible selective pressures.
A 2026 review in the Journal of Human Evolution treats endurance pursuit hunting as an active debate, including whether such hunts were common and energetically advantageous compared with walking. That framing reflects the current state of the question: the physiological capacity is clear, while its evolutionary importance and frequency remain open.
How to evaluate competing explanations
When comparing endurance running with another proposed explanation for human evolution, ask the same questions of each model:
- Predicted anatomy: Does the behavior predict the traits that appear together in early Homo?
- Energetic return: Would the calories or survival benefit plausibly exceed the cost under the relevant environmental conditions?
- Archaeological visibility: Should the behavior leave traces that archaeologists could actually identify?
- Ecological scope: Does the model work in savanna, woodland and changing climates, or only in a narrow setting?
- Behavioral prerequisites: Does it require advanced tracking, weapons, cooperation, fire or other abilities that may have appeared later?
- Alternative benefits: Could the same traits be explained by travel, scavenging, carcass defense or social movement without a long chase?
This framework prevents a common error: treating a plausible use of endurance as proof that it was the original selective cause.
What the hypothesis does not say
- It does not say humans are the fastest land animals.
- It does not say early humans ran marathon distances every day.
- It does not say persistence hunting was the only way early humans obtained meat.
- It does not provide a proven percentage for how often persistence hunts occurred.
- It does not turn one modern hunter-gatherer practice into a direct fossil record.
- It does not make running the sole explanation for the human body or human evolution.
Bottom line: a strong capacity, an unsettled cause
The endurance running hypothesis is persuasive at the level of anatomy and physiology: humans have a distinctive suite of traits that supports prolonged running and cooling, and the major components appear in a more human-like Homo body plan around 2 million years ago. Persistence hunting is a credible way that capacity could have produced food, alongside scavenging, carcass defense and long-distance ranging. What remains unproven is whether persistence hunting was frequent and important enough to be the principal evolutionary engine. The scientifically careful conclusion is that endurance running was likely useful in human evolution, while the exact selective history is still being tested.
