The Emirates Mission to Explore the Asteroid Belt (EMA) is a planned United Arab Emirates deep-space mission. Its spacecraft, MBR Explorer, is scheduled for launch in the first quarter of 2028, then will use gravity assists at Venus, Earth and Mars to reach a sequence of main-belt asteroids. The plan calls for six close flybys, followed by a rendezvous with asteroid (269) Justitia and deployment of a lander. The mission is intended to investigate water-rich asteroid materials, geology and resource potential; it has not yet produced scientific results because launch and encounters are still in the future.
EMA and MBR Explorer: two names for different parts of the mission
EMA is the mission program. MBR Explorer is the spacecraft that will travel from Earth through the inner Solar System and into the asteroid belt. The UAE Space Agency presents the mission as a 13-year undertaking: approximately six years for spacecraft design and development, followed by about seven years of flight and asteroid exploration.

In an April 2026 status update, the agency said the spacecraft had entered full-scale hardware realization. Subsystems were being assembled, integrated and tested, while the planned launch period remained the first quarter of 2028. Those statements describe work in progress and scheduled milestones, not completed flight operations.

The mission has two linked purposes. Scientifically, it will examine how water-rich asteroids formed and changed, and will measure their physical properties. Programmatically, it is intended to expand UAE engineering and scientific capability, support academic programs and private-sector participation, and create international partnerships for deep-space work.

How the planned journey works
1. Spacecraft development and testing
The published six-year development phase covers the design, manufacture, integration and testing of MBR Explorer. Testing is especially important for a spacecraft that must operate for years without physical servicing. Cameras, infrared instruments, communications, power, thermal-control systems, navigation hardware and the lander interface all have to function as one vehicle before launch.
The April 2026 update’s description of assembly, integration and testing is a progress report rather than a guarantee that every later milestone will occur on schedule. The launch target is still stated as Q1 2028.
2. Gravity assists at Venus, Earth and Mars
MBR Explorer is planned to make gravity-assist flybys of Venus, Earth and Mars before beginning its asteroid encounters. During a gravity assist, a spacecraft flies past a planet on a carefully selected trajectory. The planet’s motion around the Sun changes the spacecraft’s heliocentric velocity and direction, allowing mission planners to reshape the orbit without carrying enough propellant to perform the entire maneuver directly.

The UAE Space Agency describes the complete planned journey as approximately five billion kilometres. That is the mission’s stated travel distance, not a measurement of a completed route.
3. Close flybys of six main-belt asteroids
After the planetary assists, MBR Explorer is expected to make close approaches to six main-belt asteroids. A flyby does not place the spacecraft into orbit around each object. Instead, the spacecraft passes at a planned distance and collects observations while its instruments view the asteroid’s illuminated and thermal surfaces.
During each encounter, navigation measurements help determine the asteroid’s position and motion. Imaging and spectroscopy can then be combined with the spacecraft’s trajectory to study surface composition, geology, temperature and other physical characteristics. The flyby sequence lets one mission sample several objects rather than relying on a single asteroid as a representative of the belt.

The UAE Space Agency announced a lander design and development agreement with the Technology Innovation Institute in January 2025. Under the published concept, MBR Explorer will release the lander at Justitia so the smaller vehicle can conduct measurements at or near the surface. The exact landing sequence, surface operations and duration remain dependent on the spacecraft and lander’s final design, navigation performance and the asteroid’s environment.
What the spacecraft will measure
The agency’s descriptions identify four principal instrument types. Their measurements are complementary: a camera shows what a surface looks like, while infrared instruments reveal information about minerals, temperature and heat behavior that visible images alone cannot provide.
| Instrument | Primary contribution | Questions it can support |
|---|---|---|
| High-resolution camera | Detailed images of asteroid surfaces | What landforms, craters, boulders and surface textures are present? |
| Thermal infrared camera | Maps emitted heat and temperature patterns | How does the surface heat and cool, and where do thermal differences occur? |
| Thermal infrared spectrometer | Measures infrared signatures associated with materials and thermal properties | What minerals or surface materials may be present, and how do they behave thermally? |
| Mid-wavelength infrared spectrometer | Samples another part of the infrared spectrum | What compositional and thermophysical clues are not visible in ordinary images? |
The combined data are intended to address surface composition, geology, interior density, temperature and thermophysical properties. “Intended” is important: the instruments have not yet returned measurements from the target asteroids, so no discovery should be presented as an EMA result.
Why water-rich asteroids matter
One central objective is to understand the origins and evolution of water-rich asteroids. Asteroids preserve material from the early Solar System, but they are not all alike. Comparing several bodies can help scientists examine how composition, heating, impacts and other processes changed them over time.

Water-rich material is also relevant to future space activity. Water can be scientifically important as a record of planetary history and potentially useful as a resource if it can be extracted and processed. EMA is designed to assess resource potential, not to demonstrate that a commercially usable deposit exists. The mission’s observations may show where hydrated or volatile-bearing materials occur and how their physical properties vary, but questions about extraction, engineering feasibility and economics would require later missions and technologies.
Planned schedule and the date that remains uncertain
| Milestone | Published plan or status | How certain is it? |
|---|---|---|
| Spacecraft development | About six years within the 13-year mission concept | Program description; hardware work was reported in progress in April 2026 |
| Launch | First quarter of 2028 | Planned date, not a completed launch |
| First asteroid encounter | Expected in February 2030 | Agency forecast |
| Six flyby targets | Encountered during the asteroid-belt tour | Planned mission sequence |
| Justitia rendezvous and lander phase | After the six flybys | Planned final exploration phase |
| Final landing year | 2033 on the UAE Government platform; 2034 in UAE Space Agency material | Official descriptions differ, so the year should be treated as a planning estimate |
The disagreement between 2033 and 2034 is not a minor formatting issue for readers tracking the mission. It means a single “landing year” should not be stated as settled fact. The agency’s seven-year flight-and-exploration description, launch readiness, trajectory changes and later operational decisions could all affect the eventual date.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What makes the mission technically demanding
Long-duration navigation
Planetary gravity assists and asteroid flybys require accurate trajectory knowledge over years. Small errors accumulate, and each correction can alter the geometry of later encounters. The spacecraft must therefore combine ground-based tracking with onboard systems that keep it healthy between communications sessions.
Small, irregular targets
Asteroids are much smaller than planets and can have irregular shapes, uneven surfaces and poorly known rotation states. A close flyby must be planned around lighting, viewing angle, spacecraft speed and safe pointing of the instruments. A rendezvous adds another challenge: the spacecraft has to match the asteroid’s orbit closely enough to operate nearby.
Best Value
Thermal and power management
The spacecraft will pass through regions with very different solar heating conditions. Instruments that observe infrared energy must be calibrated and thermally controlled so that the spacecraft’s own heat does not overwhelm the signal from an asteroid. Power, communications and temperature limits also have to be managed across a mission lasting more than a decade from development through final operations.
Lander operations
Deploying a lander is more complex than releasing a probe on a simple ballistic path. The release must occur at the right relative position and velocity, and the lander must cope with weak gravity and an uncertain surface. Contact, orientation, communications and instrument operation all have to be planned for an environment unlike Earth.
What EMA could contribute to UAE space capability
The UAE Space Agency frames EMA as more than a single science flight. Developing a spacecraft for interplanetary navigation can train engineers in systems integration, guidance, communications, thermal design and mission operations. The program also aims to strengthen university participation, encourage private-sector involvement and establish international cooperation.

How to interpret announcements about the mission
- Separate status from schedule: “being assembled, integrated and tested” describes work reported in April 2026; “launch in Q1 2028” describes a target.
- Separate encounters from discoveries: a planned flyby or landing is not evidence that an asteroid has already been characterized.
- Keep the target count precise: the plan calls for six flybys and a seventh target, Justitia, for rendezvous and lander operations.
- Keep the final year qualified: official sources cite both 2033 and 2034 for the Justitia landing phase.
- Distinguish resource assessment from resource use: EMA may improve knowledge of asteroid materials, but it is not itself a mining demonstration.
The mission in one sequence
- Design, build and test MBR Explorer and its instruments.
- Launch during the currently planned Q1 2028 window.
- Use gravity assists at Venus, Earth and Mars to shape the interplanetary trajectory.
- Travel roughly five billion kilometres along the planned route.
- Perform close scientific flybys of six main-belt asteroids.
- Rendezvous with (269) Justitia for sustained observations.
- Deploy the lander developed through the UAE Space Agency–Technology Innovation Institute agreement.
- Use the resulting imaging, infrared, thermal and physical-property measurements to study water-rich asteroids and evaluate questions about future resource use.
EMA is therefore best understood as a staged asteroid-belt survey culminating in a lander-enabled investigation of Justitia. Its most important facts today are the architecture and the status: MBR Explorer is in hardware realization, launch is planned for Q1 2028, and every asteroid encounter and scientific result remains prospective.
