The Earthshot Prize is an environmental award founded by HRH Prince William in 2020 to find, celebrate and help scale solutions that could repair the planet by 2030. It organizes that mission around five goals—called Earthshots—and awards five annual winners, one per goal.
The selection process moves from a global nomination network to a Top 150, then 15 finalists, before The Earthshot Prize Council chooses five winners. Each winner receives a catalytic £1 million grant, while every finalist joins a year-long fellowship with tailored support and access to the Prize’s Global Alliance.

The Prize is therefore more than a ceremony or a cash award. Its operating model is to identify solutions with evidence behind them, give them visibility and resources, and connect them with institutions that can help them expand.
What the Earthshot Prize is designed to do
The Prize treats climate and environmental progress as a portfolio of practical problems rather than one single contest. Its five Earthshots cover nature, air, oceans, waste and climate. A nominated entry is expected to be a solution that already has a proven prototype, signs of success and the potential to create positive environmental impact. The emphasis on evidence is important: the program is looking for approaches that can be adopted or expanded, not only ideas at the concept stage.

HRH Prince William founded the Prize in 2020 with a ten-year objective. In a 2025 announcement, he described that goal as making the decade “the decade in which we transformed our world for the better.” The 2030 horizon gives the award a defined period in which to move from discovery to measurable scale.
The five Earthshots
Each year produces one winner in each category. The categories are broad enough to include public policy, community programs, technologies, finance and other forms of organized action, provided the work addresses the relevant environmental challenge and can show credible progress.
Protect and Restore Nature
This Earthshot covers protecting biodiversity, repairing damaged ecosystems and producing food in ways that protect nature. A relevant solution might therefore combine conservation with livelihoods or food systems, rather than treating habitat protection as separate from human needs. The central question is whether the approach can preserve or restore natural systems while working at a meaningful scale.

Clean Our Air focuses on improving air quality and reducing pollution from activities such as burning fields, forests and waste. It also includes the transition to clean transportation. Solutions can address the source of pollution, the way people travel or the systems that monitor and manage air quality.
Revive Our Oceans
Revive Our Oceans includes protecting and restoring coastal ecosystems, replenishing fish populations and reducing demand for fishmeal. The Earthshot recognizes that ocean recovery involves both ecological restoration and the economic pressures that drive extraction. A strong candidate would need to show how its method can improve marine or coastal conditions and remain viable beyond a pilot.
Build a Waste-Free World
This Earthshot targets food loss, single-use and non-recycled plastics, and the broader shift toward circularity in sectors such as fashion and electronics. Circular approaches keep materials in use for longer and reduce the volume of waste requiring disposal. The category can include changes in design, production, collection, reuse or recycling, as long as the solution addresses waste at a system level.

Fix Our Climate
Fix Our Climate covers an equitable clean-energy future, reductions in non-CO2 greenhouse gases and decarbonization in hard-to-abate sectors. The word “equitable” matters: the Earthshot is not limited to emissions performance, but also considers whether the transition can work for communities affected by energy and industrial change.

How the Earthshot Prize process works
The selection path has several distinct stages. The numbers below describe the structure of the process; annual nomination totals and cohorts can change.
1. Solutions are searched for and nominated
The Prize works through a worldwide network of Official Nominators and its own science-backed research. Nominators identify candidate solutions that fit one of the five Earthshots. The program looks for a working prototype or an operating intervention, evidence that it is succeeding and a credible possibility of wider environmental benefit.
The available information describes a nomination-led process, not a general public application form. It does not establish that anyone can self-nominate, nor does it set out a single eligibility rule for individuals, companies, governments or nonprofits. What is clear is that the subject of a nomination is a solution and that evidence of performance is expected.
2. The field is narrowed to a Top 150
From thousands of nominations, the process identifies a Top 150. This is an intermediate longlist across the five Earthshots. Reaching it means a proposal has advanced through the initial review, but it is not yet a finalist and does not carry the winner grant.

3. Fifteen finalists are selected
The next stage produces 15 finalists, representing the strongest solutions of that year across the five goals. In a balanced cohort, that means the finalists collectively cover all five Earthshots; the final award still goes to only one winner in each category.

4. The Prize Council chooses five winners
The Earthshot Prize Council makes the final selection. It chooses one winner for Protect and Restore Nature, one for Clean Our Air, one for Revive Our Oceans, one for Build a Waste-Free World and one for Fix Our Climate. The Council’s role is distinct from the expert assessment that supports the earlier stages.
5. Winners and finalists enter the support phase
After the announcement, each winner receives the grant associated with the award. All 15 finalists enter a year-long Earthshot Fellowship. Fellowship support is tailored to the needs of each solution and is intended to help with finance, partnerships, policy support and wider adoption through the Prize’s Global Alliance.
Who can be nominated?
The Prize’s published process points to solutions with three characteristics: a proven prototype, signs of success and potential for positive environmental impact. That description is more useful than assuming the award is restricted to one legal type. The 2025 winners included a city government, a treaty, a fashion event, a nature-focused organization and a climate-resilience organization, showing that the field can include very different kinds of institutions and initiatives.
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteA prospective nominee should be able to explain which Earthshot it addresses, what has already been built or implemented, what evidence demonstrates progress and what would be required to expand. A compelling idea without an operating example would not match the stated expectation for a proven prototype. Likewise, a local project can be relevant, but it must make a credible case that its method can produce broader environmental value.
The 2025 process used 575 Official Nominators. That figure describes the size of the network for that cohort; it is not a permanent quota or a promise that the same number will participate every year.
How winners are assessed and chosen
The process combines specialist review with a final Council decision. For the 2025 cohort, more than 100 subject-matter experts served on an Expert Advisory Panel. Their role was to provide informed assessment of a large and technically diverse field. The Council then selected the five winners from the finalist group.

This structure separates evidence review from the final award decision. It also means that a solution can be scientifically credible yet not win if another finalist is judged stronger for that year’s Earthshot. The award is not presented as a league table in which every finalist receives a different cash ranking; it is five category decisions followed by support for the full finalist class.
What winners and finalists receive
The winner grant
Each of the five annual winners receives a £1 million catalytic grant. “Catalytic” describes the intended function: the money is meant to help unlock additional finance, partnerships, policy support or adoption, rather than to represent the entire cost of scaling a global solution. The available description does not specify a single spending formula, repayment condition or currency-conversion rule, so those details should not be assumed.
The Earthshot Fellowship
All 15 finalists receive a year of dedicated fellowship support, not only the five winners. The support is tailored, which allows the needs of a city program, a treaty process, a community organization or a commercial system to be handled differently. The fellowship is a development and connection program, not a second prize category.
The Global Alliance
Finalists also gain access to the Earthshot Global Alliance. The network brings together philanthropies, nonprofits, government agencies, investors and businesses that may help a solution find capital, implementation partners, policy openings or routes to a larger market. The stated primary goal is speed: move proven approaches into wider use faster than they could progress alone.

The 2025 cohort was selected from nearly 2,500 nominations spanning 72 countries. Its winners illustrate how differently an Earthshot solution can be organized.
| Earthshot | 2025 winner | What the award recognized |
|---|---|---|
| Protect and Restore Nature | re.green | A nature-restoration solution recognized under the biodiversity and ecosystem goal. |
| Clean Our Air | The City of Bogotá | A city-led approach to cleaner air; the Prize reported that Bogotá’s air pollution had fallen 24% since 2018. |
| Revive Our Oceans | The High Seas Treaty | An international governance solution for protecting ocean areas beyond national jurisdictions. |
| Build a Waste-Free World | Lagos Fashion Week | A fashion-sector approach aligned with the waste and circularity challenge. |
| Fix Our Climate | Friendship | A climate-resilience organization whose work reaches vulnerable communities. |
The figures attached to Friendship show the scale of its reported reach: more than 7.5 million people each year, over 8.3 million days of emergency food support and access to safe drinking water for more than 80,000 people in coastal Bangladesh. Those are impact figures reported for the 2025 winner, not a universal threshold that every nominee must meet.

Where the ceremony takes place
The ceremony has rotated among London, Boston, Singapore, Cape Town and Rio de Janeiro. The official awards information schedules the 2026 event for Mumbai, India. Host cities and event arrangements are annual details, so they should be checked against the current official announcement when planning attendance or reporting on a future ceremony.
What makes the Prize different from a one-time environmental award
Three design choices define the Earthshot model. First, the five Earthshots give the award a stable set of environmental outcomes instead of changing themes every year. Second, the nomination and shortlist stages favor solutions that have moved beyond an untested concept. Third, the program continues after the ceremony through the fellowship and Global Alliance.
That last element changes how the award should be interpreted. Winning can provide money and public attention, but the program’s stated purpose is to help an approach scale through relationships with funders, governments, businesses and civil-society organizations. A finalist that does not win still receives structured support and network access for a year.

How to evaluate an Earthshot nominee or winner
If you are assessing a candidate, use the same practical questions implied by the Prize’s process:
- Which Earthshot does it serve? The environmental problem should fit one of the five defined goals.
- What exists today? Look for a proven prototype or an operating program, not only a proposal.
- What evidence shows progress? Ask for measured outcomes, adoption or other signs of success and identify the period and location covered by those figures.
- Can it scale responsibly? Consider finance, policy, partnerships, supply chains and the capacity needed to expand without shifting harm elsewhere.
- Who benefits? For climate and infrastructure solutions especially, check whether the approach addresses equity as well as environmental performance.
- What help is missing? The fellowship and Global Alliance are designed to fill gaps such as capital, policy access, technical partners or implementation capacity.
These questions do not reproduce a secret scoring formula—the Prize has not published one in the supplied material—but they explain why prototype evidence, impact potential and scalability recur throughout the program.
Why the Earthshot Prize matters
Environmental solutions often fail to spread because they lack finance, trusted partners, policy support or public visibility, even when the underlying method works. The Earthshot Prize is built to address those bottlenecks alongside recognition. Its five annual grants are visible, but the larger mechanism is the combination of evidence-based discovery, a high-profile Council decision, a year of finalist support and a network intended to accelerate adoption.
For readers, the key distinction is simple: the Earthshot Prize is not merely a competition for ideas. It is a nomination and selection system for working environmental solutions, followed by financial and institutional support aimed at helping those solutions reach more people and places before 2030.
