What Is the Difference Between Revenue Growth and Profit Growth in FMCG?

Revenue growth measures how much an FMCG company’s sales or turnover increased. Profit growth measures how much a specified profit line—such as gross, operating or net profit—increased. They are not interchangeable: sales can rise while profit falls when costs increase faster than revenue, while profit can grow faster than sales when margins improve or unusual costs disappear.

To interpret either rate correctly, identify the profit measure, separate volume from price and mix, and establish whether the comparison is reported, organic or underlying, constant-currency, and affected by acquisitions, disposals or one-off charges.

Revenue growth answers whether sales dollars increased

Revenue, also called sales or turnover, is the money recorded from products and services sold during a period. Revenue growth is normally calculated as:

For an FMCG group, that headline change can combine more units sold, higher prices, a shift toward premium or larger packages, changes in retail and food-service channels, currency movements, and acquisitions or disposals. A reported increase therefore does not automatically mean consumers bought more products.

Companies often publish an organic or underlying sales measure as well. These issuer-defined measures commonly remove currency and portfolio effects, but the exclusions differ. “Organic,” “underlying” and “constant currency” should be treated as labels requiring the company’s own definition, not as perfectly standardized industry terms.

Profit growth answers whether a named profit amount increased

Profit is what remains after specified costs are deducted. The answer changes depending on the line selected:

  • Gross profit is revenue minus the cost of goods sold, including relevant ingredients, packaging and manufacturing costs.
  • Operating profit deducts operating expenses such as selling, marketing, research, administration and other operating charges.
  • Net profit is the amount left after items such as financing costs, taxes and any other below-operating-line effects.

Profit growth uses the same percentage structure as revenue growth, but with the chosen profit line in place of revenue. A statement that “profit grew” is incomplete unless it names gross, operating or net profit and says whether the figure is reported or adjusted.

Profit growth is not the same as margin growth

Profit margin expresses profit as a percentage of revenue:

Profit margin = Selected profit ÷ Revenue × 100

Profit dollars can increase while margin declines if sales grow faster than profit. Conversely, margin can improve on lower sales while total profit dollars fall. Coca-Cola defines gross profit margin as gross profit divided by net operating revenues and operating margin as operating income divided by net operating revenues in its 2025 Form 10-K (2025 Form 10-K).

Why revenue and profit growth diverge in FMCG

Price changes can raise sales while units fall

Higher list prices or promotional changes increase revenue per unit. If shoppers buy fewer units, nominal revenue may still rise even though volume is flat or negative. Unilever’s 2024 reporting separates underlying volume growth (UVG) from underlying price growth (UPG). It defines UPG as the increase in turnover attributable to price changes during the period (Unilever Annual Report on Form 20-F 2024).

Price-led growth can support profit when the price increase more than offsets higher input costs. It can hurt future volume, however, if consumers switch to cheaper products or private-label alternatives. A revenue percentage without the volume and price split cannot show which of these outcomes is occurring.

Product, package, channel and geographic mix changes the result

Mix describes what the company sold, not just how much. A move toward premium products, larger packs, convenience channels or higher-priced countries can lift average revenue. A shift toward entry-level packs, discount retailers or lower-priced markets can suppress revenue per unit.

Mix also affects cost and margin. Premium products may carry more gross profit, but a channel with higher distribution fees, promotional spending or delivery costs can produce less operating profit despite a higher selling price. Coca-Cola’s definition of price/mix includes pricing actions and changes in product, package, channel and geographic mix, illustrating why the category is broader than a simple price increase (Coca-Cola 2025 Form 10-K).

Input and operating costs can outpace sales

Profit absorbs costs that revenue does not: commodities, packaging materials, wages, freight, factory overhead, marketing, warehousing, technology and administration. If those costs rise by more than the additional sales, gross or operating profit growth will lag revenue growth or turn negative.

Cost inflation does not affect every product equally. A company may recover ingredient costs through pricing in one category while absorbing them in another to protect market share. The consolidated profit line blends those decisions across brands, countries and channels.

Productivity and investment can widen or narrow the gap

Factory automation, procurement savings, better logistics and lower waste can expand margins without an equivalent increase in sales. The reverse occurs when a company invests ahead of demand in brand support, new products, capacity, distribution or supply-chain resilience. Those investments can reduce near-term operating profit while management expects longer-term volume or pricing benefits.

Currency and portfolio transactions affect reported comparisons

When a group sells in multiple currencies, exchange rates translate local sales and profits into its reporting currency. A stronger reporting currency can reduce reported growth even when local operations expand; a weaker one can inflate the translated result.

Acquisitions add the purchased business to the consolidated period, while disposals remove sales and profit. Organic or underlying measures may exclude these portfolio effects, but the exact treatment varies by issuer. Compare reported and underlying figures side by side rather than substituting one for the other.

One-off charges can make profit growth look extreme

Impairments, restructuring, litigation, transaction costs and accounting remeasurements can depress one year and make the next year’s profit appear to surge. The reverse occurs when an unusual gain benefits the comparison period. Always label a result as reported or adjusted and explain the item removed from an adjusted measure.

How FMCG companies build a sales-growth explanation

The following decomposition keeps unlike effects separate:

Component What it describes Question to ask
Volume Units, cases, litres or other physical quantities sold Did consumers buy more product?
Price Changes in realized selling prices Did each unit generate more revenue?
Mix Changes in products, packs, channels or geographies Did the sales composition move up or down the price ladder?
Currency Translation of local results into the reporting currency Is the reported change different from local-currency performance?
Portfolio Acquisitions, disposals and consolidation changes Is the company larger or smaller because its perimeter changed?

These components may not add exactly to the headline percentage because companies use different calculation methods and rounding. They explain revenue, not profit; costs and exceptional items must be examined separately.

What recent FMCG filings show

Coca-Cola: modest revenue growth, stronger operating-profit growth

Coca-Cola reported 2025 net operating revenues of $47,941 million, up 2% from 2024. Its reported components were volume plus 1%, price/mix plus 4%, foreign exchange minus 2%, and acquisitions and divestitures minus 1%. The company notes that components may not sum exactly because of rounding and methodology (Coca-Cola 2025 Form 10-K).

Coca-Cola measure 2025 result Comparison or explanation
Net operating revenues $47,941 million Up 2% versus 2024
Volume +1% Reported component
Price/mix +4% Reported component
Foreign exchange −2% Reported component
Acquisitions/divestitures −1% Reported component
Gross profit margin 61.6% 61.1% in 2024
Operating income $13,762 million Up 38% versus 2024
Operating margin 28.7% 21.2% in 2024

The 0.5-point gross-margin improvement was attributed primarily to pricing and prior-year refranchising effects, partly offset by currency and commodity costs. The much larger operating-income increase was primarily driven by lower other operating charges, including a major prior-year fairlife liability remeasurement, plus 1% concentrate volume growth and favorable pricing; commodity costs and currency were offsets. This is why a 38% operating-profit increase cannot be read as a 38% sales increase or assumed to be a recurring operating trend.

Unilever: underlying sales growth despite lower reported turnover

Unilever’s 2024 underlying sales growth was 4.2%, made up of 2.9% underlying volume growth and 1.3% underlying price growth (Unilever Annual Report on Form 20-F 2024). The figures illustrate a sales decomposition and are not a profit-growth rate.

In its 2025 Annual Report and Accounts, Unilever reported turnover of €50.5 billion, operating profit of €9.0 billion and net profit of €6.2 billion. Reported turnover fell 3.8% year over year, while underlying sales grew 3.5%, consisting of 1.5% volume and 2.0% price. Currency movements and portfolio disposals affected reported turnover (Unilever Annual Report and Accounts 2025).

Unilever 2025 view Reported or underlying Result
Turnover Reported €50.5 billion; down 3.8% year over year
Sales Underlying Up 3.5%
Volume Underlying Up 1.5%
Price Underlying Up 2.0%
Operating profit Reported amount €9.0 billion
Net profit Reported amount €6.2 billion

Comparing the reported and underlying columns prevents a common error: concluding that the underlying business contracted simply because the consolidated, currency-affected turnover number declined.

Can revenue grow while profit falls?

Yes. Consider an illustrative business whose revenue rises from 100 to 110, a 10% increase. If total costs rise from 90 to 103, profit falls from 10 to 7, a 30% decline. Margin drops from 10% to 6.4%. The extra sales did not cover the faster increase in costs.

The opposite can also happen. If revenue rises from 100 to 103 while costs fall from 90 to 88, profit increases from 10 to 15. Sales growth is only 3%, but profit growth is 50% because productivity or the removal of an unusual cost expands the margin. These are arithmetic illustrations, not industry benchmarks.

A practical method for comparing FMCG companies or periods

  1. Match the period. Compare the same fiscal quarter, half-year or full year, and check whether one company uses a different year-end.
  2. Match the reporting basis. Put reported revenue beside organic or underlying sales, and note constant-currency treatment and portfolio changes.
  3. Choose one profit line. Compare gross with gross, operating with operating, or net with net. Do not call an operating-profit change “net-profit growth.”
  4. Calculate both dollars and margins. Record the profit amount, the percentage growth and profit divided by revenue. The three measures answer different questions.
  5. Split sales into volume and price/mix. A price-led increase has different demand and sustainability implications from a volume-led increase.
  6. Bridge revenue to profit. Review commodity, packaging, labor, freight, marketing, overhead, productivity and investment effects.
  7. Separate recurring and unusual items. Identify impairments, restructuring, litigation, remeasurement, transaction effects and prior-year exceptional charges before relying on an adjusted rate.
  8. Check cash generation and sustainability. Cash flow can reveal working-capital pressure or heavy investment, but it is a separate measure and must not be substituted for profit.

Common interpretation mistakes

  • Calling price inflation volume growth: higher revenue per pack does not prove more units were sold.
  • Treating underlying growth as a universal definition: read each issuer’s reconciliation and exclusions.
  • Using margin as profit growth: a percentage margin and a currency profit amount are not interchangeable.
  • Comparing different profit lines: gross, operating and net profit include different expenses.
  • Ignoring currency and perimeter changes: reported consolidation can move independently of local operating performance.
  • Annualizing a one-off rebound: a low prior-year base or exceptional charge can exaggerate the next year’s percentage.
  • Assuming revenue quality from one number: sustainable growth requires examining volume, pricing, mix, costs, productivity and cash conversion together.

Which growth rate matters for a decision?

Revenue growth is the starting signal for demand and market reach. Profit growth shows whether the company converts that sales activity into economic returns after the costs included in the selected line. Investors, managers and analysts should read both, then test the source: volume versus price/mix, reported versus underlying, margin movement, recurring versus exceptional items, and the cost and cash consequences.

A concise, defensible description therefore looks like this: “Reported revenue grew X%; underlying sales grew Y%, driven by volume A% and price/mix B%; operating profit grew Z%, with margin moving from M% to N% after [identified recurring or unusual factors].” That format prevents a sales increase from being mistaken for profitable growth.
