Short answer: A natural-origin hypothesis says SARS-CoV-2 entered humans through zoonotic spillover from an animal, either directly from bats or through an intermediate host. A lab-leak hypothesis says the virus reached people through a research-related incident, such as an accidental infection or release. “Lab leak” does not, by itself, mean the virus was genetically engineered or deliberately released.

WHO’s Scientific Advisory Group for the Origins of Novel Pathogens (SAGO) said on 27 June 2025 that the weight of available evidence favors zoonotic spillover, while also saying that every hypothesis, including a laboratory-associated incident, remains open because the first transmission event has not been reconstructed conclusively.

What the two hypotheses actually claim

Natural origin: an animal-to-human route

The natural-origin hypothesis proposes that SARS-CoV-2 evolved in an animal reservoir and then crossed into people. Bats are a possible reservoir because related coronaviruses have been found in bats, but the exact source species for SARS-CoV-2 has not been identified in the current WHO assessment. The virus could have infected humans directly or passed through an intermediate animal that brought it into closer contact with people.

“Natural origin” describes a route of emergence, not a complete story. It does not by itself identify the first infected person, the precise location of transmission, the date of the spillover, or the animal species involved. Those details remain unresolved.

Lab leak: a research-associated route

The lab-leak hypothesis proposes that the virus reached humans through laboratory or other research activity. Possible mechanisms include an accidental infection of a worker, a breach in containment, or an accidental release of a naturally occurring virus being studied. The hypothesis concerns how a virus could have left a research setting; it does not establish what the virus was doing before that event.

A laboratory-associated incident is therefore different from claims that the virus was designed, genetically engineered, or intentionally released. Those are separate propositions that require separate evidence. A person can consider a lab-associated accident possible without asserting engineering or intent.

Questions that are not the same as origin

Both hypotheses address the first successful entry of SARS-CoV-2 into humans. They are not explanations for later community spread, the severity of the pandemic, government policy, or individual responsibility. They also do not answer whether a particular institution acted negligently or whether anyone intended harm. Those are separate questions that should not be smuggled into an origin claim.

Side-by-side comparison

Question Natural-origin hypothesis Lab-leak hypothesis
Proposed route into humans Animal-to-human spillover, directly from a reservoir such as bats or through an intermediate host A research-related incident, such as accidental infection or release
Evidence that would be most informative Epidemiology, animal and environmental sampling, and evolutionary analysis showing a plausible animal-to-human chain Documented laboratory exposure, infection, accident, release, or records linking a specific virus and event to the first human cases
What is established publicly WHO’s 2025 SAGO summary says the weight of available evidence suggests zoonotic spillover No specific research-associated exposure or release has been established in the cited WHO assessment
Main unresolved point The source animal and complete transmission chain A documented event connecting laboratory activity to the first human infection
Does the label imply genetic engineering? No No. Engineering would be a separate claim requiring separate evidence

What WHO’s 2025 assessment concluded

On 27 June 2025, WHO announced SAGO’s independent assessment of the origins of SARS-CoV-2. Its public summary states that “the weight of available evidence…suggests zoonotic spillover…either directly from bats or through an intermediate host.” That is an assessment of where the available evidence points, not a declaration that investigators have identified the exact animal or observed the first transmission.

In the same release, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said: “As things stand, all hypotheses must remain on the table, including zoonotic spillover and lab leak.” These two statements belong together. SAGO gave greater evidentiary weight to zoonotic spillover but did not claim that a laboratory-associated route had been definitively excluded.

SAGO’s review covered published scientific papers and reports, unpublished information, field studies, interviews, audit findings, government reports, intelligence reports, presentations, and expert discussions available through June 2025. That broad scope means the assessment considered multiple evidence streams; it does not mean every potentially relevant record was available or that the first event can now be reconstructed with certainty.

Why the evidence currently favors zoonotic spillover

Patterns in early cases and exposure

A natural-origin case is strengthened when the earliest known illnesses, locations, dates, and animal or environmental exposures fit a plausible spillover pattern. Epidemiological analysis asks where the first cases appeared, whether they clustered around places where people and live animals came into contact, and whether the timing is consistent with repeated animal-to-human transmission. These patterns can support a route without identifying the exact source animal.

Epidemiology alone cannot prove an origin. Early case records may be incomplete, exposure histories may be unavailable, and an outbreak can obscure the earliest infections. The evidence has to be combined with sampling and evolutionary analysis.

Animal and environmental evidence

Researchers look for related viruses in wildlife, genetic traces of a virus in environments where animals and people interacted, and a plausible biological path from an animal reservoir to humans. Finding a related virus is not the same as finding the direct ancestor of SARS-CoV-2, and finding viral material in an environment does not automatically identify which host was infected or who infected whom.

The Huanan market data

In March 2023, SAGO discussed newly released SARS-CoV-2 sequences and metagenomic data associated with samples collected at Wuhan’s Huanan Seafood Wholesale Market. SAGO described these results as potential leads that could help identify intermediate hosts and possible sources of human infection. That wording matters: the data are relevant evidence and a direction for investigation, not confirmation that a particular animal was infected or proof of the complete route into humans.

Evolutionary analysis

Genomic comparisons can show how SARS-CoV-2 relates to known coronaviruses and whether its observed diversity is consistent with an early animal-to-human emergence followed by human transmission. Evolutionary analysis can narrow plausible histories, but it does not independently reveal the physical location of the first infection. It must be interpreted alongside epidemiological, environmental, and animal evidence.

What evidence would be needed for a laboratory-associated incident

A specific exposure or release record

The lab-leak hypothesis would become substantially stronger if investigators produced contemporaneous records showing that a worker was infected with a virus matching the earliest SARS-CoV-2 lineage, or that a specific laboratory accident released such a virus. Useful records could include medical or occupational-health documentation, dated sample inventories, incident reports, access logs, or other independently verifiable evidence connecting a virus, a facility, and a time period.

A virus match and a credible chain of events

A general statement that laboratories handled coronaviruses is not enough. Evidence would need to connect the virus under study to SARS-CoV-2 or its immediate precursor and explain how exposure could have occurred. The stronger the proposed chain—from sample collection to laboratory work to human infection—the less the argument depends on inference.

What remains missing in the public assessment

SAGO’s public conclusion did not identify a documented research-associated exposure or release that explains the first human cases. That does not prove that no such event occurred; it means the cited assessment did not regard a specific event as established on the available information. The unknown is therefore concrete: investigators still lack a publicly demonstrated laboratory incident tied to the emergence.

Scientific assessments and intelligence judgments are different

Scientific reviews and intelligence assessments answer related but different questions and use different standards. SAGO evaluated scientific publications, field work, interviews, audits, government material, and intelligence reporting as part of an overall evidence assessment. A government intelligence agency may instead judge the likelihood of competing explanations using classified information, source reporting, and confidence levels.

A declassified U.S. intelligence assessment records differing agency judgments and confidence levels. Those judgments should be attributed to the agencies and to the date of that assessment. A divided intelligence picture is not a scientific consensus, and an intelligence conclusion should not be presented as if it were a laboratory finding. Conversely, a scientific review cannot automatically resolve information that remains classified or unavailable to independent investigators.

Common mistakes when describing the debate

“Lab leak” means engineered virus

It does not. A laboratory accident could involve a naturally occurring virus that was collected, transported, or studied. Genetic engineering is an additional claim, not a definition of the lab-leak hypothesis.

A market association proves an infected animal

It does not. Market-linked environmental or metagenomic data can identify promising leads, but a positive environmental sample does not by itself establish which animal carried the virus or the direction of transmission.

“All hypotheses remain open” means all have equal support

It does not. WHO’s wording preserves the possibility of a laboratory-associated route while its SAGO summary says the weight of available evidence favors zoonotic spillover. Openness reflects unresolved uncertainty, not equal evidentiary weight.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Unresolved” means there is no evidence

It does not. An origin can have a leading explanation without a fully documented chain of events. In this case, SAGO’s qualified conclusion and its list of remaining unknowns should be reported together.

A timeline of the key public assessments

Date Development What it establishes
March 2023 SAGO statement on newly released Huanan market sequences and metagenomic data The data were treated as potential leads for identifying intermediate hosts and possible sources of human infection, not as confirmation of a source animal
27 June 2025 WHO released SAGO’s independent assessment of SARS-CoV-2 origins The weight of available evidence was said to suggest zoonotic spillover, either directly from bats or through an intermediate host
27 June 2025 WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus called for every hypothesis to remain on the table The laboratory-associated hypothesis was not declared impossible or conclusively ruled out
Declassified assessment date U.S. intelligence community assessment Different agencies expressed different judgments and confidence levels; it should not be summarized as a single intelligence consensus

How to evaluate a new claim about the origin

  1. Identify the claim’s category. Is it about animal spillover, a laboratory accident, genetic engineering, deliberate release, or later spread? Do not treat these as interchangeable.
  2. Ask what evidence is actually offered. Look for dated records, samples, genomic comparisons, epidemiological data, or a documented exposure rather than a general association.
  3. Check the source and date. State whether the conclusion comes from WHO and SAGO, a scientific paper, a government intelligence agency, or an individual commentator.
  4. Preserve confidence language. “Suggests,” “possible,” “likely,” and “confirmed” have different meanings. Do not turn a qualified assessment into a definitive claim.
  5. Separate evidence from inference. A lead can justify further investigation without proving a transmission chain.
  6. Check what remains unknown. A credible account should identify the missing source animal, exposure record, or chain of transmission instead of filling gaps with certainty.

What can responsibly be said now

The most accurate short formulation is: WHO’s 2025 SAGO assessment said that available evidence weighs toward zoonotic spillover, while retaining a lab-associated incident among the hypotheses that cannot be excluded. Natural origin and lab leak describe different routes into humans. Neither label, by itself, establishes genetic engineering, deliberate release, a particular animal, or a specific laboratory event.

That distinction lets readers understand both parts of the current evidence picture: one explanation has greater support in the public WHO assessment, but the precise first transmission event remains unresolved.
