Cygnus is an uncrewed cargo spacecraft operated by Northrop Grumman for NASA’s Commercial Resupply Services (CRS) missions to the International Space Station (ISS). A separate launch rocket sends it to orbit; after a rendezvous, astronauts use the station’s Canadarm2 robotic arm to capture Cygnus and berth it at the Unity module’s Earth-facing port.
The crew unloads research, hardware and supplies, then eventually releases Cygnus with station waste. The spacecraft makes a destructive atmospheric reentry rather than returning cargo intact, and NASA can use its propulsion system to raise or adjust the station’s orbit.

What Cygnus is—and what it is not
Cygnus is the cargo-carrying spacecraft in a NASA CRS transportation service. Northrop Grumman operates the spacecraft and conducts the resupply mission; NASA is the customer and mission authority. The launch vehicle is a separate part of the system. For example, the CRS-24 Cygnus XL launched on a SpaceX Falcon 9, but the Falcon 9 and Cygnus are not the same vehicle. NASA’s commercial-resupply overview identifies Cygnus XL as the company’s larger, more cargo-capable, solar-powered spacecraft: NASA’s Commercial Resupply Rockets overview.

No astronauts ride inside it, and it does not arrive at the station by a normal crewed spacecraft docking. The ISS crew commands Canadarm2 to grapple the approaching vehicle and robotically install it on Unity. This capture-and-berthing method lets the station control the final attachment while keeping an uncrewed cargo vehicle away from a direct docking maneuver.

Its pressurized cabin carries items that can be transferred through the station’s hatch: science investigations, replacement equipment, maintenance hardware, food, clothing and other crew provisions. The exact manifest changes for each flight, so the amount loaded on one mission should not be treated as a permanent specification for every Cygnus.
How a Cygnus resupply mission works
1. Cargo is selected, packed and launched
NASA and its partners assemble a mission-specific manifest. Investigations may need a controlled environment, while station hardware and crew supplies must be packed for safe transfer and storage. The complete Cygnus spacecraft is placed inside a rocket’s payload fairing, and the rocket supplies the initial climb and acceleration to orbit.
CRS-24 provides a dated example. NASA reported that a Cygnus XL launched from Cape Canaveral on April 11, 2026, aboard a Falcon 9 carrying approximately 11,000 pounds of cargo. That figure describes the CRS-24 load reported by NASA, not a universal maximum capacity for all Cygnus flights: NASA’s CRS-24 launch release.
2. Cygnus flies to the station
Once the launch vehicle has deployed it, Cygnus uses its own guidance, navigation and propulsion systems to rendezvous with the ISS. NASA describes the spacecraft approaching the station before the capture operation. The approach is monitored and controlled under station traffic rules, but the cited mission material does not establish a single universal distance, timing rule or rendezvous profile that applies to every flight.
3. Canadarm2 captures the spacecraft
When Cygnus reaches the approved capture position, astronauts operate Canadarm2—the Space Station Remote Manipulator System—to grapple the vehicle. NASA’s CRS-24 overview says the crew then robotically installs Cygnus XL at Unity’s Earth-facing port for unloading: NASA’s CRS-24 mission overview.

“Capture” means the robotic arm physically takes hold of Cygnus. “Berthing” means the arm moves it to the station port, where the spacecraft is secured and connected. Calling this a direct docking or a crewed arrival obscures the way the operation actually works.
4. The crew berths, checks and unloads it
After berthing, station controllers and the crew complete leak checks and configure the hatch area before opening the cargo vehicle. Astronauts remove packages according to the station’s stowage and experiment plans. The cargo can support long-running investigations, provide replacement parts for life-support and other systems, or replenish everyday crew supplies.

A single flight’s delivered mass, item count or experiment mix cannot be used as a blanket claim about every Cygnus mission. NASA’s CRS-24 reporting is the appropriate source for that flight’s approximately 11,000-pound load, while NASA’s broader CRS pages describe the service’s science, equipment and supply role.
5. Cygnus leaves with waste
Cygnus is useful after its cargo bay is empty. The crew loads it with discarded packaging, obsolete hardware and other material that should not remain aboard the ISS. NASA describes Cygnus as a way to dispose of several thousand pounds of station waste. Some departing vehicles can also carry research that would be unsuitable or hazardous to conduct inside the occupied station: NASA’s CRS-20 overview.
6. The spacecraft reenters and burns up
Controllers command Cygnus to depart the station and target a destructive atmospheric reentry. It is therefore not a reusable return capsule for bringing experiments or equipment back to Earth intact. Most of the vehicle burns during reentry, with any surviving material falling in a controlled oceanic disposal area under mission procedures.

Cygnus can help raise the ISS orbit
Cygnus has a role beyond delivery and waste disposal. NASA describes an orbital-reboost capability in which the spacecraft fires its thrusters while attached to the station, increasing the station’s orbital energy and adjusting its altitude. Atmospheric drag slowly lowers the ISS, so periodic reboosts help maintain the required orbit.
On September 25, 2026, NASA reported that the CRS-24 Cygnus XL completed a reboost maneuver. Its thrusters fired for 18 minutes; NASA reported an increase of 1.5 miles at apogee and 0.8 miles at perigee. Those are the measured changes from that specific event, not a fixed performance promise for every Cygnus mission: NASA’s Cygnus XL reboost report.
The maneuver illustrates why a resupply spacecraft can be operationally valuable even after unloading. Its propulsion is already in the correct location—attached to the ISS—and can supplement the station’s routine orbit-maintenance resources. The exact firing duration and altitude change depend on the mission plan and current orbit.
CRS-24 timeline and figures
CRS-24 is a useful current example because NASA reported its launch, arrival and reboost in 2026. The dates and numbers below belong to that flight and should not be read as a standard schedule or capacity specification.
| Event | NASA-reported detail | What the figure means |
|---|---|---|
| Launch | April 11, 2026 | Cygnus XL launched from Cape Canaveral on a SpaceX Falcon 9. |
| Launch cargo | Approximately 11,000 pounds | The reported CRS-24 manifest; it is not a universal Cygnus capacity. |
| ISS arrival | April 13, 2026 | NASA reported the vehicle’s arrival for the capture-and-berthing operation. |
| Reboost | September 25, 2026 | Cygnus XL performed a station-orbit adjustment after its cargo mission. |
| Thruster firing | 18 minutes | The duration NASA reported for the CRS-24 reboost maneuver. |
| Altitude change | 1.5 miles at apogee; 0.8 miles at perigee | Event-specific orbital changes reported for that reboost. |
NASA’s mission page provides additional CRS-24 context and status information: CRS-24 mission page. Because schedules, vehicle status and orbital operations change, dates should be tied to the specific NASA update rather than presented as a timeless Cygnus timetable.

Cygnus XL versus an earlier Cygnus version
NASA calls Cygnus XL the larger, more cargo-capable version of the company’s solar-powered spacecraft. That establishes a relative difference, but the cited NASA material does not provide a like-for-like table of maximum payload, dimensions, pressurized volume or service life for every Cygnus variant. The safest comparison is therefore qualitative:
| Characteristic | Cygnus XL | Earlier Cygnus version |
|---|---|---|
| Relative cargo capability | NASA describes it as more cargo-capable. | Baseline version; a comparable numeric capacity is not stated in the cited sources. |
| Power approach | Solar-powered spacecraft. | Solar-powered Cygnus family spacecraft. |
| Capture method at ISS | Canadarm2 capture followed by berthing at Unity. | Cygnus-family CRS operations use the same arm-assisted capture-and-berthing concept described by NASA. |
| End of mission | Waste loading, possible reboost role and destructive reentry. | Cygnus-family disposal and reentry role; mission details vary. |
Do not substitute the approximately 11,000 pounds reported for CRS-24 as the designed maximum of Cygnus XL. Delivered mass is determined by the particular manifest, launch opportunity and mission constraints.
Why the capture-and-berthing method matters
- It separates launch from station attachment. A rocket handles ascent, while Canadarm2 performs the final installation at the station.
- It gives the crew a controlled transfer point. Once Cygnus is secured at Unity, astronauts can open the hatch and move pressurized cargo into the ISS.
- It supports an uncrewed spacecraft. Cygnus does not need seats, crew life support or a crew-return system.
- It enables a useful disposal mission. The same vehicle that brings supplies can carry waste away for destructive reentry.
- It can add propulsion services. When mission planning permits, attached Cygnus thrusters can contribute to station reboost.
Common misconceptions to avoid
“Cygnus is the rocket.”
No. Cygnus is the spacecraft. A launch provider supplies a separate rocket, and the provider can vary by mission and date. CRS-24 used Falcon 9; that does not mean every Cygnus mission uses that launcher.
“Cygnus docks like a crew vehicle.”
No. Astronauts use Canadarm2 to grapple and berth it at Unity’s Earth-facing port. The terms capture and berthing describe the actual sequence.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →“Every Cygnus carries 11,000 pounds.”
No. Approximately 11,000 pounds was NASA’s reported CRS-24 load. It is a mission figure, not a universal capacity claim.
Best Value
“It brings cargo back to Earth.”
No. Cygnus is loaded with waste and sent into a destructive atmospheric reentry. It is not a reusable cargo-return capsule.
“The spacecraft is finished once the hatch is empty.”
No. Depending on the mission, it can remove waste, host research after departure and perform an orbit-reboost maneuver before reentry.
Where Cygnus fits in ISS logistics
The station depends on a mix of transportation systems because no single vehicle performs every logistics task. Cygnus is optimized for one-way delivery of pressurized cargo, station waste disposal and, on suitable missions, propulsion support. Its lack of a cargo-return function is a limitation when an experiment or hardware sample must reach Earth intact, but it also avoids the mass and complexity of a reusable reentry vehicle.

In practice, mission planners match the vehicle to the cargo’s physical form, environmental requirements, urgency and need for return.
What to remember
Cygnus is Northrop Grumman’s uncrewed NASA cargo spacecraft, not a launch rocket and not a crewed capsule. A rocket sends it toward the ISS; the station crew uses Canadarm2 to capture and berth it at Unity; astronauts unload a mission-specific mix of science, equipment and supplies; and the spacecraft later departs with waste for destructive reentry. NASA can also use an attached Cygnus to help adjust the station’s orbit, as demonstrated by the 18-minute CRS-24 reboost reported in September 2026.
