What Is the Cosmological Constant, and Why Might Dark Energy Change?

The cosmological constant, written as Λ (lambda), is the simplest representation of dark energy in the standard ΛCDM model. It is a constant term in Einstein’s equations that produces accelerated cosmic expansion and behaves as if its pressure is exactly the negative of its energy density, with an equation-of-state value w = −1.

Recent observations have not shown that dark energy is changing. DESI analyses released in 2025 found dataset-dependent preferences for an evolving-dark-energy model, but a July 2026 DESI Lyman-alpha full-shape update moved toward ΛCDM. ACT’s DR6 analysis likewise found no statistically significant departure from the baseline model. The live question is whether small tensions reflect evolving dark energy, unrecognized measurement or modeling effects, or ordinary statistical fluctuation.

What the cosmological constant means

In general relativity, matter and energy determine how spacetime curves. Einstein’s equations also permit a term that belongs to spacetime itself rather than to ordinary matter. That term is the cosmological constant, Λ. Its energy density does not dilute as the universe expands, while its negative pressure causes expansion to accelerate once matter becomes sufficiently sparse.

ΛCDM names a complete baseline cosmological model: “Λ” is the cosmological constant, and “CDM” is cold dark matter. The model also includes ordinary matter, radiation, neutrinos and the geometry of the universe. Dark energy is the name for whatever component drives the observed late-time acceleration; Λ is one possible description of that component, not a laboratory identification of what dark energy physically is.

Why Λ is the simplest dark-energy model

A cosmological constant has one fixed behavior at every time and place. Its energy density stays constant, and its equation-of-state parameter is exactly w = p/(ρc²) = −1. In contrast, a dynamical field or modified-gravity theory can have an energy density and pressure that vary with cosmic time. Λ therefore adds the fewest extra degrees of freedom to the expansion history that fits current observations.

“Simplest” does not mean “explained.” Quantum-field calculations suggest a vacuum-energy scale vastly different from the tiny value inferred cosmologically, a discrepancy that remains unresolved. Observations measure Λ’s gravitational effect; they do not identify its microscopic origin or prove that it is literally a particular form of vacuum energy.

How scientists test whether dark energy changes

The test is an expansion-history measurement. Researchers compare the distances and growth of structure at different redshifts with predictions from ΛCDM and with more flexible models in which dark energy evolves.

Baryon acoustic oscillations as a standard ruler

In the hot early universe, pressure waves traveled through the coupled plasma of photons and baryonic matter. When atoms formed and the waves froze into the matter distribution, they left a preferred separation scale called baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO). Because that physical scale can be calibrated from early-universe physics, its apparent size at a measured redshift acts as a standard ruler.

A survey measures galaxy and quasar positions, finds the BAO feature, and infers combinations of the expansion rate and distance to that redshift. Repeating the measurement over many redshift bins maps how expansion changed over time. DESI uses galaxies and quasars at lower redshifts and the Lyman-alpha forest at higher redshifts.

What the Lyman-alpha forest adds

The Lyman-alpha forest is a sequence of absorption lines produced by neutral-hydrogen clouds along the line of sight to a distant quasar. Thousands of quasar sightlines let DESI reconstruct correlations in the intervening hydrogen. These measurements reach redshifts above two, an era when the universe was much younger than today.

DESI’s 2025 first-three-year DR2 analysis included nearly 15 million galaxies and quasars. Its Lyman-alpha BAO scale measurement above redshift two had a quoted statistical precision of 0.65 percent. The newer July 2026 analysis fitted the full shape of the Lyman-alpha correlation function, not only the location of the BAO peak. Shape information carries additional constraints and produced substantially smaller uncertainty than the BAO-only result.

Other data sets

  • Cosmic microwave background (CMB): Maps of the relic radiation from roughly 380,000 years after the Big Bang establish precise early-universe conditions. Combining CMB constraints with low-redshift distances tests whether one expansion history connects the early and late universe.
  • Type Ia supernovae: These explosions provide calibrated relative luminosities. Comparing their observed brightness with redshift measures how the expansion rate has changed along the line of sight.
  • Weak gravitational lensing: The slight distortion of background galaxies by intervening matter measures both structure growth and geometry. It can reveal whether the amount of clustering matches the expansion history predicted by ΛCDM.

Each probe has different calibration and modeling uncertainties. Combining them can sharpen a constraint, but it can also expose tensions or make a result sensitive to assumptions shared by the data sets.

ΛCDM versus an evolving-dark-energy fit

A common phenomenological alternative is the two-parameter w0–wa model, in which the equation of state changes with scale factor. ΛCDM is recovered at the specific point corresponding to a constant w = −1 (with no time variation). Allowing two parameters gives the fit more freedom, so an apparent improvement must be weighed against the cost of that extra flexibility and against systematic uncertainties.

A “preference” means that, for a stated data combination and parameterization, the best-fitting evolving model has a lower statistical discrepancy than ΛCDM. It does not establish that the extra parameters represent a real physical field. Significance is also conditional: changing the surveys, redshift ranges, nuisance models or statistical treatment can change the result.

What DESI reported in 2025

DESI’s 2025 DR2 public results compared its BAO measurements with CMB, weak-lensing and supernova data. Depending on the combination, the collaboration reported preferences for evolving dark energy ranging from 2.8 to 4.2 sigma. These values were below the 5-sigma benchmark commonly used for a discovery claim in particle physics and cosmology.

The range is important. It is not one universal significance attached to “DESI found changing dark energy.” It reflects different combinations of DESI with external data. The combinations are not independent replications: they reuse some information and share possible systematics. DESI’s result therefore established an important testable tension, not a discovery.

DESI co-spokesperson Will Percival described the implication this way: “It’s looking more and more like we may need to modify our standard model of cosmology to make these different datasets make sense together — and evolving dark energy seems promising.” That is a statement about the challenge of fitting data sets together, not confirmation of a changing substance.

What changed with the July 2026 DESI update

DESI’s DR2 Results IV analysis added Lyman-alpha forest full-shape and Alcock–Paczynski information. In the reported combinations, an evolving w0–wa model was preferred over ΛCDM by 2.7 sigma when DESI was combined with the CMB, and by 3.2 sigma when supernovae were added. The preprint was revised on 4 August 2026; these are not discovery-level significances.

At the same time, the July 2026 full-shape measurement itself moved toward ΛCDM relative to the earlier evolving-dark-energy best fit. DESI’s official explanation says the new measurement agrees with ΛCDM and has substantially smaller uncertainty than the BAO-only Lyman-alpha result. This is a meaningful counterweight to the 2025 headlines: the newest high-redshift information did not simply strengthen a case for evolution.

Two broad interpretations remain possible. The earlier hints could fade as measurements improve, leaving ΛCDM as an adequate description. Alternatively, a more complex model—or a systematic effect affecting one or more surveys—could be needed to reconcile all observations. The update does not decide between those possibilities, and it does not prove ΛCDM is the final theory.

What ACT DR6 found

The Atacama Cosmology Telescope’s DR6 analysis reported an equation-of-state value of w = −0.986 ± 0.025 in its stated cosmological fits. That result is statistically consistent with w = −1, the cosmological-constant value. ACT reported no statistically significant preference for departure from baseline ΛCDM in its analysis.

ACT’s result is not a direct measurement of a time-varying field. It is an independent CMB-based constraint that provides context for the DESI combinations. Agreement with ΛCDM in one analysis does not erase every data-set tension, but it means the overall evidence is not moving uniformly in one direction.

Does a few-sigma result mean dark energy is changing?

No. In a Gaussian statistical picture, a sigma value measures how unusual the data would be under a specified null model, given the analysis choices. It does not give the probability that a physical theory is true. The significance can change when researchers alter the data combination, nuisance-parameter treatment, redshift cuts, covariance estimates or the allowed dark-energy parameterization.

There is also a “look-elsewhere” issue: many models and combinations can be examined, and the most interesting fluctuation may look stronger after selection. Independent surveys, improved calibration and predictions made before seeing new data are needed to turn a preference into robust evidence.

The 5-sigma convention is a demanding discovery threshold, not a law of nature. Falling below it does not prove ΛCDM; it means the evidence is not yet strong enough to claim a discovery under that convention.

What would count as convincing evidence for evolution?

  • Multiple independent probes would need to favor a consistent time dependence, with the result surviving reasonable changes in calibration and analysis choices.
  • Future measurements would need to reproduce the preferred direction in redshift bins rather than relying on one broad fit.
  • The evolving model would need a physically viable mechanism that fits expansion, structure growth, CMB constraints and gravitational lensing simultaneously.
  • Predictions made before new data should be confirmed without repeatedly selecting the most favorable combination after the fact.

Conversely, if larger samples and improved full-shape analyses continue to move toward w = −1, the present hints would increasingly look like statistical fluctuation or residual systematics rather than new physics.

Common misconceptions

“Dark energy” and “dark matter” are the same thing

They are not. Dark matter adds attractive gravity and helps form cosmic structure. Dark energy is the name for the component associated with accelerated expansion. ΛCDM includes both, but they play opposite roles in the late-time expansion and structure history.

Λ is a confirmed physical substance

Λ is a term in a successful model. Its gravitational behavior is measured, while its underlying physical identity remains unknown. Calling it vacuum energy is an interpretation, not a laboratory detection.

DESI proved that dark energy is weakening

DESI’s 2025 combinations reported conditional preferences for evolution, and the July 2026 full-shape update shifted toward ΛCDM. Neither result proves that dark energy is weakening, strengthening or changing in any particular physical way.

The fate of the universe is already known

Long-term outcomes depend on the true dark-energy behavior and on physics not established by these analyses. Current results do not determine whether expansion will approach a fixed de Sitter-like state, evolve differently or require a theory beyond ΛCDM.

Where the question stands now

Λ remains the baseline model because one constant term fits a broad body of CMB, BAO, supernova and lensing observations with relatively few parameters. DESI’s 2025 data combinations made evolving dark energy a serious question, with preferences of 2.8–4.2 sigma but no discovery-level result. The July 2026 Lyman-alpha full-shape analysis reduced the apparent pressure for evolution by moving toward ΛCDM, while ACT DR6 found w = −0.986 ± 0.025 and no significant departure from the baseline model.

The scientifically accurate answer to “Is dark energy changing?” is therefore: it has not been proven. Researchers are testing a live, model-dependent possibility, and the outcome remains sensitive to which measurements are combined and how the models are specified. More independent data—not a single headline significance—will decide whether Λ survives as the best description or gives way to a dynamical theory.
