1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe Bitcoin Lightning Network is a payment layer built on Bitcoin for sending bitcoin without recording every individual payment on the blockchain. Two users lock funds into a shared 2-of-2 multisignature payment channel, update their respective balances off-chain, and use Bitcoin transactions only to open, settle, or enforce that channel. When the payer and recipient are not directly connected, Lightning can forward the payment through a route of other channels using cryptographic conditions that make the transfer atomic rather than relying on each intermediary to take custody.
What the Lightning Network is
Lightning is a peer-to-peer network that operates above Bitcoin’s base blockchain. Its purpose is to move bitcoin quickly and economically for payments that do not need a separate on-chain transaction every time. Bitcoin remains the settlement and enforcement layer: it secures the funds used to create channels and provides a recovery path when a channel closes.

The key idea is to make many balance changes off-chain, between the parties that share a channel. Instead of broadcasting each coffee purchase or small transfer to Bitcoin miners, the participants exchange updated records showing how much of the channel’s funds belong to each side. Only the channel’s opening and eventual settlement normally appear on-chain.
Lightning does not replace Bitcoin for every use. A user still needs bitcoin to fund a channel, and closing a channel produces an on-chain transaction. It is better understood as a second-layer payment system that uses Bitcoin’s settlement guarantees while handling routine payments elsewhere.

How a payment channel is created
1. Both parties fund a 2-of-2 output
A channel starts when two participants commit bitcoin to an on-chain 2-of-2 multisignature output. “2-of-2” means both participants’ signatures are required to spend the funding output under the channel’s normal rules. The Lightning Network Builder’s Guide describes this arrangement as “a 2-of-2 multisignature contract between two parties holding bitcoin.”
The funding transaction establishes the channel’s total capacity. If the participants lock 0.01 BTC together, the channel cannot transfer more than that amount in aggregate, apart from protocol-specific handling of fees and reserves. Opening the channel requires a normal Bitcoin transaction and therefore depends on Bitcoin’s confirmation conditions and transaction fees at that time.
2. They exchange signed balance states
After funding, each side keeps a current channel state locally. That state records the split of the channel’s funds and the commitment data needed to settle it. When one participant pays the other, both sides approve a new state that shifts the balance. The old state is revoked or otherwise made unsafe to use according to the implementation’s rules, so a participant cannot legitimately settle an outdated balance without consequences.

The channel’s capacity stays bounded by its funding, while the allocation between the two sides changes repeatedly. Wallet software handles the signatures, state management and protocol messages; users generally see a payment balance rather than raw commitment transactions.
An illustrative balance change
Suppose Alice and Bob open an illustrative channel with 0.010 BTC total. Initially, Alice has 0.006 BTC of the channel balance and Bob has 0.004 BTC. Alice pays Bob an illustrative 0.001 BTC. The next off-chain state records 0.005 BTC for Alice and 0.005 BTC for Bob. No separate Bitcoin transaction is required for that payment. The figures are examples, not network statistics or a recommended channel size.
How a channel closes
Cooperative close
If both participants are online and agree, they can cooperatively close the channel. They sign a settlement transaction that pays each side its final balance, subject to any applicable fees. That transaction is broadcast to Bitcoin, where it receives the normal on-chain treatment.

Force close
If the other participant is unavailable, uncooperative or malfunctioning, either side can force-close using a valid commitment transaction. This unilateral path is an enforcement and recovery mechanism, not the normal way to make each payment. It can require waiting for on-chain handling, observing time-lock rules and paying a Bitcoin transaction fee. Depending on the output and implementation, some funds may be temporarily encumbered before they can be spent.

“Off-chain” therefore means that routine balance updates are not individually recorded on Bitcoin. It does not mean Bitcoin is irrelevant or that funds can never return to the blockchain.
How a payment reaches someone without a direct channel
Invoices and payment initiation
A typical Lightning payment begins with the recipient generating an invoice. The invoice generally encodes the destination, amount (unless it is a “zero-amount” invoice), a payment hash and validity information. The recipient shares it as text or a QR code, and the sender’s wallet parses it before attempting payment.
The invoice-based flow documented by LND involves interaction between sender and receiver at payment time. Other mechanisms, including LNURL and BOLT12, can provide different ways to request or present payments, but they still rely on compatible Lightning software and a usable route.
Route selection
If the sender and recipient do not share a channel, the sender’s node searches for a path through intermediary nodes. Public channel announcements can describe a channel’s existence, capacity and fee or timeout policy. The sender uses that information, along with its knowledge of the network, to construct a route and attempt the payment.
A route is directional. A channel that can carry funds from node A to node B may not be able to carry the same amount from B to A, because the channel’s current balance is divided between its two sides. A route may also contain private channels that are not visible in public announcements, or it may become unusable while the payment is being attempted.

Conditional forwarding with HTLCs
Lightning links the hops with hashed time-lock contracts, commonly called HTLCs. In plain language, each forwarding step is conditional: an intermediary can claim the incoming payment only after it forwards the corresponding payment and learns the cryptographic preimage that proves the recipient’s claim. Time locks give earlier hops more time to resolve than later hops.
This structure is designed to make a multi-hop transfer atomic. If the recipient reveals the preimage and the conditions are met, the successful payment propagates back through the route. If the attempt fails or times out, the conditional transfers can be cancelled or returned according to the protocol rules. Intermediaries forward the payment and may earn a fee, but they are not supposed to have unilateral custody of the sender’s funds.
Capacity, liquidity and why payments fail
Total capacity is not spendable balance
A channel’s advertised capacity tells you how much bitcoin is committed to it in total. It does not tell you the exact current balance on each side. For example, a channel with 0.100 BTC capacity might have nearly all of its usable balance on one side, leaving little or nothing available in the opposite direction.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Every hop in a payment needs enough directional liquidity for the amount being forwarded, plus any fees charged by later hops. A route can therefore look plausible from public data and still fail when attempted. The sender’s wallet may retry with a different route, split the payment if supported, or report that no route with sufficient liquidity was found.
Common failure causes
- Insufficient directional liquidity: one channel cannot send the required amount in the needed direction.
- Stale network information: a channel changed state or went offline after the sender learned about it.
- Amount and fee limits: an intermediary’s policy rejects the payment size or cannot cover the required forwarding fee.
- Invoice problems: the invoice expired, was already paid, has an incompatible amount, or contains invalid details.
- Temporary node or wallet issues: a participant is offline, restarting, behind on synchronization, or unable to meet protocol requirements.
Connectivity alone is not a guarantee of success. Lightning has no universal route-success rate, latency target or service-level promise; results depend on the wallet, route, liquidity and fee policies available at the time.
Lightning fees and speed
Two kinds of cost
Forwarding nodes can set fee policies for their channels. A sender’s routing fee is calculated from the selected path and the policies along it, so there is no timeless flat Lightning fee. A longer or more expensive route can cost more than a short route.

Opening and closing a channel are different cost events. They are Bitcoin transactions, so their fees depend on transaction size, fee-market conditions and the chosen wallet’s construction. A cooperative close and a force close can have different transaction structures and timing.

Bitcoin.org characterizes Lightning payments as near-instant and typically lower cost than on-chain transactions, particularly for small, frequent payments. That is a general design characterization, not a guaranteed response time. Wallet processing, route discovery, node availability, liquidity and fee negotiation all affect the experience. A payment does not need to wait for a new Bitcoin block in the same way an on-chain payment does, but a failed attempt may require another route or a later retry.
Lightning compared with an on-chain Bitcoin payment
| Dimension | Lightning payment | On-chain Bitcoin payment |
|---|---|---|
| Blockchain record | Routine balance changes occur off-chain; channel funding and settlement are on-chain. | Each payment is submitted as an individual Bitcoin transaction. |
| Confirmation experience | Designed for rapid exchange without waiting for a new block for every payment; actual completion depends on route and wallet conditions. | Normally waits for Bitcoin network propagation and block confirmation according to the recipient’s policy. |
| Liquidity requirement | Requires an open channel, directly or through a route, with sufficient directional liquidity at every hop. | Requires the sender to control sufficient confirmed or spendable on-chain funds; no channel route is needed. |
| Fees | Routing nodes may charge forwarding fees; opening and closing also incur Bitcoin transaction fees. | Uses the fee attached to the individual Bitcoin transaction. |
| Settlement and recovery | Cooperative close or unilateral force close settles the channel on Bitcoin. | The payment is already settled through the blockchain transaction and its confirmations. |
Neither layer is universally better. Lightning is suited to repeated payments where avoiding an on-chain transaction each time matters; on-chain Bitcoin is the direct settlement method when channel setup, routing or directional liquidity is unsuitable.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What using Lightning requires
A compatible wallet and keys
You need wallet software that supports Lightning and access to the keys or recovery data controlling the funds. The wallet may operate a node itself or use a service-assisted architecture. Read its recovery instructions carefully: a Lightning balance is not necessarily recoverable in the same way as a simple on-chain wallet balance, and channel state may matter.
Channel or service liquidity
Self-managed users must obtain inbound and outbound liquidity appropriate to the payments they expect to make and receive. Some wallets automate channel management or use hosted channels, but those designs introduce their own operational and trust assumptions. Receiving a payment may require inbound liquidity even when the wallet shows an overall bitcoin balance.
Online interaction
Payment delivery involves protocol communication. Depending on the wallet and payment method, the recipient or its service may need to be reachable when the invoice is paid. Users should understand how their wallet handles offline receiving, watchtower-style monitoring, backups and force-close events rather than assuming that every Lightning setup behaves identically.

Security and privacy boundaries
Conditional forwarding and Bitcoin contracts reduce the need to trust routing intermediaries with custody. They do not eliminate operational risk. Losing keys or recovery information, running incompatible software, ignoring channel state or failing to monitor a force-close situation can make funds difficult to access.
LND documentation describes payments as source-routed to protect sender privacy. That is a narrower claim than saying Lightning is anonymous. Information can be exposed through the sender’s wallet, recipient, intermediaries, channel announcements, timing, amounts, implementation choices or other network analysis. Treat privacy as a property that depends on the implementation and circumstances, not an absolute guarantee.
A practical payment walkthrough
- Install and secure a compatible wallet. Record its recovery information using the wallet’s documented procedure, and test that you understand how restoration works before committing a significant amount.
- Fund the wallet. Acquire bitcoin through an on-chain deposit or another supported method. If the wallet requires a channel, allow for the Bitcoin transaction and any confirmation policy.
- Check the payment details. Scan or paste the recipient’s invoice. Verify the amount, destination and expiry shown by the wallet before approving.
- Review the route and fee. The wallet will select a path and calculate any forwarding fee. A low displayed fee does not guarantee that the route has enough liquidity.
- Approve and wait for the result. A successful payment should show a settled status and a payment receipt or identifier. If it fails, do not repeatedly pay an invoice without checking whether the first attempt actually settled.
- Retry safely when needed. Use the wallet’s retry or route-selection option, request a fresh invoice if the original expired, or ask the recipient to confirm the invoice status.
Troubleshooting failed payments
If the wallet says there is no route
Try a smaller amount, a fresh invoice, or a different route if the wallet offers that control. The problem is often directional liquidity rather than a total lack of network connectivity. If the recipient can provide another Lightning endpoint or payment method, that may avoid the unavailable path.

If the payment is pending
Do not immediately send a second payment. Check the wallet’s payment details, ask the recipient whether the invoice settled, and allow the protocol’s timeout handling to complete. A pending HTLC may need to resolve before the funds become spendable again.
If a channel is stuck or a peer disappears
Keep the wallet running and follow its documented recovery or force-close procedure. A force close can create an on-chain transaction and time delays, so ensure the wallet has enough on-chain fee balance where required. Do not delete channel data or restore from an unverified backup while a channel is active.
