Its documented Point & Identify mode lets you aim a device at the sky and identify objects, while its deep-sky information helps you investigate a cluster after finding it. Choose Stellarium instead if a free, open-source planetarium, a very large catalogue, telescope control, or reduced-data offline observing matters most. Choose Star Walk 2 if you want a guided, educational search experience. No app is a universal winner: the right choice depends on whether you are identifying an unknown object, searching for a named cluster, planning an observing session, or working without reliable internet.
The three best choices at a glance
Each recommendation solves a different problem. SkySafari 8 is the most balanced identification-and-learning workflow in the available documentation. Stellarium is strongest when catalogue scale, open-source software, realistic simulation, or offline use is the priority. Star Walk 2 is designed around guided discovery and named-object searches.

What a stargazing app can actually identify
An identification app compares your device orientation, location, date, and time with a sky model. When you point the device toward a region of sky, the app overlays labels or returns a target that matches that direction. A search function works in the opposite direction: you enter a name or designation, and the app shows where that object should appear.

- [Deep Bass with Clear Vocals] High-performance drivers produce punchy bass while keeping vocals clean and detailed for everyday listening.
That distinction matters for clusters. If you do not know what you are looking at, use a point-and-identify mode and then inspect the candidate object. If you already know the target is the Pleiades, search for Pleiades or M45; for the Beehive Cluster, search for Beehive Cluster or M44. A named search is generally easier than trying to recognize a faint patch among many labels.
The software can tell you where the target should be and provide catalogue information. It cannot guarantee that the target is visible from your exact spot. Light pollution, haze, clouds, trees, buildings, hills, the target’s altitude, and the time of night can all hide a cluster that the screen correctly places in the sky.
Which app should you choose?
Choose SkySafari 8 for the most balanced identification workflow
SkySafari 8 is the clearest recommendation when the central task is identifying a cluster and learning what it is. Its official listing explicitly documents Point & Identify, so you can use the device as a visual pointer rather than beginning with a catalogue search. The same listing describes deep-sky information, which gives you a next step after the label appears: read about the object, check its position, and continue planning the observation.
This makes it suitable for a mixed workflow. You might point at an unfamiliar group of stars, confirm the suggested name, open its deep-sky entry, and then return to the chart to judge its direction and altitude. The documentation does not provide a controlled comparison of identification accuracy against the other apps, nor does it establish a universal offline feature or a single telescope-control specification for every edition. Treat it as the all-around choice for convenience and object information, not as a measured accuracy champion.
Choose Stellarium for catalogue breadth, open-source software, or offline use
The official desktop site describes Stellarium as a free, open-source planetarium. Its default catalogues contain over 600,000 stars and over 80,000 deep-sky objects, a scale that suits observers who want to search broadly or plan beyond the most famous clusters. The desktop program also provides realistic sky simulation and telescope control.

Stellarium Mobile adds a practical advantage for field use: its Google Play listing says it identifies deep-sky objects in real time and supports reduced-data offline observing. Reduced-data does not necessarily mean that every image, description, update, or online service is available without a connection. Download or configure the mobile app before leaving home, and verify what remains accessible in airplane mode if connectivity is important.
Stellarium is the better fit when you begin with a catalogue, a planned observing list, or a telescope rather than an unknown object directly overhead. It is also the strongest documented option for users who value open-source desktop software. The desktop and mobile products are related but not identical, so confirm which edition meets your needs.

Choose Star Walk 2 for guided learning and named-object discovery
Star Walk 2’s official manual positions it as a guide for amateurs, professionals, and children. It says the app identifies about 250,000 heavenly bodies and provides search for Messier objects, constellations, satellites, stars, and planets. That combination is useful when you know a name or catalogue number and want the app to turn it into a visual lesson.
A beginner can search for M45, follow the displayed direction, and use the surrounding constellations as landmarks. Someone teaching a child can search several named targets in sequence instead of explaining catalogue conventions first. The manual does not establish a general offline mode, a current object-count methodology, or a telescope-control feature, so choose it for its guided presentation rather than assuming it has the same field-planning tools as a desktop planetarium.
Catalogue size is useful, but it is not the same as identification quality
Object counts describe how much data an app can contain, not how reliably a phone will recognize a dim patch from your garden. Stellarium’s documented default catalogue is the largest of the stated totals, with more than 600,000 stars and more than 80,000 deep-sky objects. Star Walk 2’s manual gives an approximate total of 250,000 heavenly bodies. SkySafari 8’s cited listing confirms deep-sky information but does not state a comparable total.

For the most familiar clusters, a smaller catalogue can be sufficient. Pleiades and the Beehive Cluster are both searchable by common name and Messier designation in the workflows described above. A very large catalogue becomes more important when you are working with less-famous targets, comparing nearby deep-sky objects, or building an observing list around a telescope’s capabilities.

Do not compare the numbers as if they were measured on identical criteria. One source counts stars and deep-sky objects in default catalogues; another gives an approximate count of heavenly bodies; the third does not publish a matching total in the cited listing. The figures indicate breadth, not a standardized ranking.
How to identify a star cluster with any of these apps
The following procedure uses the documented identification and search functions, plus practical setup steps needed for a useful match between the screen and the real sky.
- Set your observing location. Enter the correct city or enable location access, then check that the map is using the place where you are actually standing. A wrong location changes the horizon, altitude, and rising and setting times.
- Set the date and time. Use the current time for a live identification. For planning, enter the intended observing date and time. A cluster can be below the horizon now even though it will be visible later.
- Calibrate the phone’s direction sensors if prompted. Move the device in the pattern requested by the app and keep metal objects, magnetic cases, and vehicle bodies away from the phone while checking orientation. If labels drift, repeat calibration before blaming the catalogue.
- Pick identification or search. For an unknown group, open Point & Identify in SkySafari 8 or the real-time identification feature in Stellarium Mobile. For a known target, search a common name or designation such as Pleiades (M45) or Beehive Cluster (M44). In Star Walk 2, use its search for a Messier object or named celestial body.
- Match the field of view. Start with a view that resembles what your eyes or binoculars show. Excessive zoom can make orientation difficult because fewer surrounding stars remain on screen. If the app offers a camera or augmented-sky view, keep the phone’s viewing direction aligned with the actual target rather than sweeping rapidly.
- Confirm the surrounding pattern. Check neighboring bright stars, the relevant constellation, and the target’s direction. A label that appears near the correct area but has no matching surroundings may indicate sensor error, an incorrect time, or a similarly named object.
- Check visibility before concluding that the cluster is absent. Look at altitude, compass direction, twilight, clouds, haze, local light pollution, and obstructions such as roofs or trees. The app’s position is a prediction of where to look, not proof that your eyes should see the object.
Using the apps with naked eyes, binoculars, or a telescope
Naked-eye observing
For a naked-eye search, use the app as a direction and landmark guide. Keep the display brightness low enough that you can still preserve your night vision, and avoid staring at the phone continuously. Identify the broad region first, then look away from the screen and let your eyes inspect the sky. A label can be correct even when the cluster is too faint for your site.
Binocular observing
Binoculars show more stars than your eyes, so an app’s wide field can be useful for matching patterns. Begin at low screen zoom, center the target using a bright nearby star, and then raise magnification only after the orientation is secure. The app is a map; binoculars are the optical confirmation.

Telescope observing
Stellarium’s official desktop documentation includes telescope control, making it the most clearly documented choice here for a computer-to-mount planning workflow. SkySafari 8 also describes observing features oriented toward deep-sky use, but the cited listing does not specify one telescope-control implementation that applies to every edition. Star Walk 2’s manual focuses on guided identification and search rather than mount control.
Before connecting any planetarium to a mount, check the exact app edition, operating system, mount protocol, cable or network requirement, and alignment procedure. These details are version- and equipment-dependent and are not established by the cited summaries.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Offline observing: what to expect
Stellarium Mobile is the only option in the supplied documentation with an explicit offline statement: its Google Play listing says it supports reduced-data offline observing. That is valuable at a dark-sky site, on a flight, or anywhere mobile data is unreliable. Reduced-data mode should be treated as a limited operating mode, not a promise that every online image or service is cached.
For SkySafari 8 and Star Walk 2, the cited material does not establish a general offline capability. Do not assume that an app will download all catalogues automatically. Open the app at home, set the intended location and time, search the targets you expect to use, and test it with connectivity disabled. If a feature fails, save a written observing list or screenshot of the relevant chart as a backup.
Common identification failures and fixes
The labels point in the wrong direction
Recheck location, date, time, compass calibration, and device permissions. Turn off a magnetic case or move away from a car. If the app has separate orientation or sensor settings, reset them and perform the calibration again.
Best Value
The app identifies a bright star, not the cluster
Bright stars are easier for a sensor-assisted view to display. Search the cluster by name or Messier number, then use the bright star as a landmark. Reduce the field of view only after you have matched the surrounding constellation.
The target is below the horizon
Advance the app’s time, or use its planning view if available, until the cluster rises. Verify that the selected location is correct. A target can be correctly catalogued yet unavailable during the part of the night you chose.
The screen shows the cluster, but the sky looks empty
Check clouds, haze, twilight, light pollution, and obstructions. Move to a darker or more open position if safe. Use binoculars if appropriate. The independent comparison material emphasizes that local conditions determine visibility even when an app places the target correctly.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →The search returns several similar names
Use the catalogue designation, such as M44 or M45, and inspect the object type and nearby constellation. Common names can be translated or abbreviated differently between catalogues; a designation removes much of that ambiguity.
How to decide in under a minute
- You want to point at an unknown cluster and read about it: choose SkySafari 8.
- You want a free, open-source desktop planetarium with very large default catalogues: choose Stellarium.
- You need documented reduced-data offline observing on mobile: choose Stellarium Mobile, then test the exact offline functions before your trip.
- You plan to control or coordinate a telescope from a computer: start with Stellarium because telescope control is explicitly documented for its desktop software.
- You are learning the sky through named targets or teaching a beginner: choose Star Walk 2.
- You already know the cluster’s name or Messier number: any of the three can be approached through search, but the presentation and catalogue depth differ.
Important limits of the comparison
The available evidence consists of current official listings and manuals plus independent comparison context. It does not establish a controlled, side-by-side test of pointing accuracy, sensor performance, database completeness under identical definitions, or usability on every phone. The recommendations therefore describe documented capabilities and sensible workflows rather than claiming that one app always recognizes a cluster more accurately.
Store listings and manuals can change. App editions may add or remove features, and desktop and mobile versions may not share the same controls or data. Confirm the current listing for your device, read the permissions and data requirements, and test the functions you depend on before an important observing session.
