What Is the American Dream? A Guide to Its History and Meaning

The American Dream is the evolving idea that people in the United States should have the freedom and opportunity to build a better, fuller life through their abilities and effort. It has never been one fixed promise or a universal checklist. Depending on the person and the period, it can mean political freedom, economic security, upward mobility, homeownership, equality, family well-being, or personal fulfillment.

The phrase also carries a question: are those opportunities genuinely available? Recent surveys show that Americans disagree sharply about whether the Dream remains attainable, with views varying by age and income. Understanding the concept requires separating the ideal itself from the material signs people use to describe it and from measured economic mobility.

What does “the American Dream” mean?

At its core, the American Dream is an ideal of freedom and opportunity. It suggests that a person’s prospects should not be fixed by the circumstances of birth and that effort, ability, and achievement should allow people to improve their lives.

That definition contains both a value judgment and an expectation. The value judgment is that people should be free to choose how to live. The expectation is that institutions and the economy should provide a fair chance to pursue security, prosperity, or fulfillment. People may accept the first part while doubting the second.

The Dream is therefore better understood as a family of related ideas than as a single promise. One person may define it as owning a home; another may see it as freedom from discrimination, a stable retirement, a successful career, or the ability to give children more opportunities. A community may define it through safety, equal treatment, and shared well-being rather than individual wealth.

It is an ideal, not a guaranteed outcome

The phrase does not establish that anyone who works hard will become wealthy or that every individual will achieve the same result. It expresses a belief about fair opportunity. Whether that opportunity exists, and how much effort can overcome economic or social barriers, are separate empirical questions.

It is broader than money

Homeownership and wealth are familiar symbols of the Dream, but they are not its only content. Freedom of choice, family life, retirement security, equality, and personal meaning can matter as much or more. Treating the Dream as a synonym for becoming rich narrows a concept that has always included political and personal freedoms.

Where did the idea come from?

Multiple strands came before the phrase

Historian Jim Cullen identifies several overlapping strands in the history of the idea: religious freedom, political freedom, upward mobility, homeownership, equality, and personal fulfillment. These strands do not always point in the same direction. Freedom from government or religious control is a different goal from rising economically, and individual advancement can conflict with a community’s demand for equal treatment.

Because these strands developed over time, the Dream cannot be assigned a single starting date or a single original meaning. The phrase later gave a name to aspirations that had already appeared in different forms.

James Truslow Adams popularized the phrase in 1931

Historian James Truslow Adams is widely credited with popularizing “the American Dream” in his 1931 book The Epic of America, written during the Great Depression. Adams’s account centered on a life becoming “better and richer and fuller” for everyone, with opportunity based on ability or achievement rather than class or the circumstances of birth.

That wording is often presented as a quotation, but the original book should be consulted before treating any version as an exact primary-source quote. The safe historical point is that Adams made the phrase prominent and connected it to broadly shared opportunity rather than a promise of luxury for a select few.

Later meanings accumulated around the original ideal

As the phrase entered public discussion, its emphasis could shift among freedom, mobility, ownership, equality, and fulfillment. This helps explain why two people can invoke the American Dream while arguing for very different policies or life goals. They may be using different strands of the same broad tradition.

The main elements of the American Dream

The following framework separates the concepts most often grouped under the Dream. They overlap, but none is a complete definition on its own.

Element What it means Typical marker
Freedom The ability to make meaningful choices about belief, work, family, and lifestyle. Control over one’s life and protection from coercion or unequal treatment.
Opportunity A fair chance to develop abilities and pursue education, work, or enterprise. Access to institutions and pathways that are not closed by birth or identity.
Upward mobility Improving one’s economic or social position, often relative to one’s parents. Higher income, occupational status, or living standard over time.
Economic security Having enough stability to meet needs and withstand setbacks. Reliable income, manageable costs, and a secure retirement.
Homeownership Owning a home as a source of stability, independence, and wealth. A household’s ability to buy and keep a home, where that is its goal.
Equality Equal treatment and a fair chance regardless of background. Comparable access to rights, safety, education, and advancement.
Fulfillment Building a life that is meaningful, satisfying, and connected to family or community. Well-being and purpose, whether or not they produce high income.

What do Americans say the Dream means?

Freedom and family rank above getting rich in a 2017 survey

In a 2017 Pew survey, 77% of U.S. adults said freedom of choice in how to live was essential to their own American Dream. A good family life was essential for 70%, and a comfortable retirement for 60%. Homeownership and a successful career each reached 43%. Becoming wealthy was essential for only 11%.

These figures show why a wealth-only definition is misleading. Material stability matters, but respondents more often placed autonomy, family, and later-life security at the center of their aspirations.

Latino respondents describe both security and fulfillment

A Pew Research Center report published in September 2026 examined responses from its National Survey of Latinos, fielded October 6–16, 2025. Among Hispanic respondents, 59% associated the American Dream with financial security, economic opportunity, or homeownership. Thirty-nine percent described it as building happy, fulfilled lives for themselves or their community.

The categories could overlap. Respondents also mentioned freedom, hard work, equal treatment, and safety. The report found variation among Latino subgroups, so the overall percentages should not be treated as a single definition shared by every Hispanic person in the United States.

Why different answers can all be reasonable

Someone focused on opportunity may ask whether a child can obtain a better education or career than their parents. Someone focused on fulfillment may ask whether work, family, and community life are satisfying even without exceptional income. Someone focused on equality may judge the Dream by whether people receive fair treatment and safety. These are different tests, not necessarily contradictory answers.

Is the American Dream still possible?

What the 2024 Pew survey found

Pew Research Center surveyed 8,709 U.S. adults from April 8–14, 2024. Fifty-three percent said the American Dream was still possible. Forty-one percent said it had once been possible but no longer was, while 6% said it was never possible.

Still possible 53%
Once possible but no longer 41%
Never possible 6%

These are opinions recorded at a particular time, not a direct measurement of economic mobility. The results show how Americans evaluate the idea, not whether individual effort alone determines outcomes or whether every group has the same prospects.

Age and income divide perceptions

In the same survey, 68% of adults age 65 and older said the Dream remained possible, compared with 42% of adults under 50. Upper-income adults were also more optimistic: 64% said it remained possible, compared with 39% of lower-income adults.

Group Share saying the Dream remains possible
Adults 65 and older 68%
Adults under 50 42%
Upper-income adults 64%
Lower-income adults 39%

The gap is consistent with different lived experiences, but the survey alone cannot establish why the groups differ. It does not show that age or income causes a particular belief, nor does it calculate each respondent’s probability of moving up economically.

Belief in the Dream is not the same as measured mobility

Four questions should be kept separate:

  • Ideal: What opportunities and freedoms should people have?
  • Material marker: What visible result, such as a home or a higher salary, is being used as evidence of success?
  • Measured outcome: How often do people actually improve their economic position?
  • Personal belief: Do people think the opportunity is available to them or to others?

A person can believe the ideal remains valuable while thinking that current conditions make it difficult to achieve. Conversely, someone can report that the Dream is possible without claiming that the system produces equal outcomes.

Why people disagree about the Dream

Opportunity versus achievement

The phrase often moves between a promise of opportunity and a description of achievement. If it means opportunity, unequal results do not automatically disprove it, although unequal starting points may show that opportunity is not genuinely fair. If it means that hard work should reliably produce prosperity, high costs, discrimination, limited access, or economic shocks can make the promise appear broken.

Individual advancement versus family and community well-being

The classic image is an individual rising through effort. Many contemporary descriptions are collective: raising children securely, helping relatives, improving a neighborhood, or building a safe and fulfilled community. The 2025 Latino survey’s references to community well-being illustrate that the Dream need not be purely individual.

Freedom versus security

Freedom of choice is difficult to exercise without a basic level of safety and economic stability. Yet security can also require rules, public services, or shared obligations that some people view as limits on individual freedom. Debates about the Dream often conceal this tension.

Homeownership as symbol versus requirement

Owning a home can represent independence and intergenerational security, but it is not a universal requirement. Renters, people who move for work, and those who prioritize mobility or community may define a successful life differently. The 2017 survey’s results—43% naming homeownership as essential, compared with 77% naming freedom of choice—show that ownership is important to many respondents but not the whole concept.

How to interpret claims about the American Dream

When a politician, commentator, or advertisement invokes the Dream, ask what version is being used.

  1. Identify the subject. Is the claim about freedom, income, family life, homeownership, equality, or personal fulfillment?
  2. Separate access from results. Does “possible” mean that a path exists in principle, or that most people who work hard can achieve the result?
  3. Ask whose experience is represented. A statement based on affluent homeowners may not describe younger or lower-income adults.
  4. Check the time and population. Survey answers from 2017, 2024, and the 2025 field period in the 2026 Latino report describe different moments and groups.
  5. Look for the unit of success. Is success measured for one person, a household, a generation, or a community?
  6. Distinguish opinion from evidence. A poll can show what people believe; it does not by itself measure mobility, discrimination, wealth accumulation, or the probability of buying a home.

How to define the American Dream for yourself

Because the phrase is open-ended, a useful personal definition should name the outcome and the conditions that make it possible.

  1. Choose your central value. Start with freedom, security, family, equality, mobility, ownership, or fulfillment rather than with a slogan.
  2. Describe a concrete outcome. For example, you might mean a stable retirement, the ability to support relatives, meaningful work, or a safe community.
  3. Set a time horizon. A personal Dream can concern the next year, one’s children, or several generations.
  4. State the opportunity condition. Explain what fair access would require, such as education, equal treatment, safety, or a chance to earn and save.
  5. Decide whether success is individual or shared. Include family or community well-being if that is part of the goal.
  6. Test the definition against real constraints. Ask which barriers are personal and which depend on institutions, markets, public policy, or discrimination.

This approach prevents the phrase from becoming either an empty promise or a narrow measure of income. It also makes disagreements clearer: people can identify whether they differ about the goal, the fairness of the opportunity, or the likelihood of achieving it.

Further reading

Jim Cullen’s The American Dream: A Short History of an Idea That Shaped a Nation (Oxford University Press, 2003) examines the religious, political, economic, and personal strands that have been grouped under the phrase. It is useful for readers who want a historical treatment rather than a single definition.

The bottom line

The American Dream is the belief that freedom and a fair opportunity should allow people to build better, more secure, and more fulfilling lives. James Truslow Adams popularized the phrase in 1931, but the underlying ideals are older and more varied than any one definition. Americans commonly connect the Dream with freedom, family, retirement security, mobility, equality, and fulfillment—not only wealth or homeownership. In Pew’s 2024 survey, 53% still believed it was possible, while large age and income gaps revealed how differently the promise is experienced. Whether the Dream is alive therefore depends on which ideal is meant, whose opportunity is being considered, and whether the question concerns belief or measurable results.
