What Is TCP Hole Punching? A Clear Definition and How It Works

TCP hole punching is a way for two devices behind network address translators (NATs) to try to establish a direct TCP connection. They coordinate through a rendezvous service, then both initiate connections toward each other at nearly the same time. If their NATs and TCP implementations support the required behavior, the connection can pass directly between them; otherwise, a relay such as TURN may be needed.

What TCP hole punching means

A NAT lets devices on a private network communicate with the internet by translating their private addresses and ports. It also tracks connection state so replies to outbound traffic can be directed back to the right device. TCP hole punching uses that state: each peer sends traffic outward toward the other peer, aiming to create compatible NAT mappings and filtering state for their communication.

The peers typically use a rendezvous or signaling service to discover and exchange address information and coordinate the attempt. That service helps arrange the connection; it does not have to carry the application traffic if a direct connection succeeds. Implementations can differ in their signaling protocols and exact sequence. RFC 5128 surveys peer-to-peer communication across NATs, while RFC 5596 discusses TCP simultaneous open.

How the connection attempt works

  1. Coordinate: Both peers contact a rendezvous service and exchange candidate address information.
  2. Attempt outbound connections: Rather than having only one peer make a conventional inbound connection, both peers initiate TCP connection attempts toward the other’s candidate address. This is the simultaneous-open approach.
  3. Check the path: The peers determine whether the attempts produced a usable direct connection. If so, their application traffic can flow peer to peer without being carried by the rendezvous service.

Simultaneous open is a TCP behavior in which both endpoints try to establish a connection with each other. In this setting, it matters because a NAT is more likely to permit traffic associated with state created by an outbound attempt than unsolicited inbound traffic. The connection succeeds only if the endpoint behavior and the network devices along the path cooperate. RFC 6544 specifies how TCP candidates are represented and used with ICE.

Why some NATs prevent it from working

NATs differ in how they create address-and-port mappings and decide which incoming packets those mappings will admit. RFC 5128 identifies endpoint-independent mapping as a condition for the described TCP hole-punching technique. With endpoint-dependent mapping, a mapping may depend on the remote endpoint, making it harder or impossible to reuse or predict the mapping needed for a peer connection.

Mapping behavior is not the only constraint. TCP simultaneous-open support, filtering rules, and other middlebox behavior also affect the result. TCP hole punching is therefore an attempt, not a guarantee that two devices can connect through every NAT or firewall. The cited standards do not establish a universal success rate.

How ICE and TURN fit in

ICE organizes the attempts

Interactive Connectivity Establishment (ICE) gathers connection candidates and checks candidate pairs to find a working path. RFC 6544 extends ICE for TCP, including active, passive, and simultaneous-open candidate types. TCP hole punching is one possible direct-path approach within this broader candidate-checking process; ICE is not itself a guarantee that a direct route exists.

TURN relays traffic when a direct path fails

TURN provides a relay path: rather than sending traffic directly between peers, each communicates through a TURN server. RFC 8656 describes TURN and its place in NAT traversal. It states that when ICE is used to determine the path, ICE searches for a direct path using hole-punching techniques first and uses a TURN server only when a direct path cannot be found.

How it differs from ordinary inbound connections

In a conventional inbound connection, one device waits for a connection initiated by the other. NAT filtering may reject that unsolicited incoming traffic because there is no matching outbound-created state. TCP hole punching changes the setup: both peers initiate toward each other so that their NATs may create the state needed to admit the peer’s traffic. This distinction explains the technique; it does not mean every NAT treats the simultaneous attempts the same way.
