subl.exe is Sublime Text’s official Windows command-line helper. It opens files and projects from Command Prompt or PowerShell, but Windows must be able to find the executable and the copy you run should be verified. The usual “subl is not recognized” fix is adding Sublime Text’s installation folder to Path; missing or damaged files require a Sublime Text repair or reinstall.
What subl.exe does
Sublime Text documents subl.exe as its Windows command-line helper. From Command Prompt or PowerShell, it can open a file, folder, project, or a new editor window without navigating through the graphical interface. It can also be used as an EDITOR command for tools that launch a text editor.

The command works only when the shell can resolve the executable. Windows searches the directories listed in the current process’s Path environment variable. If Sublime Text is installed but its directory is not in Path, typing subl produces a command-not-found message even though subl.exe is present.

For example, subl notes.txt opens a file, while subl -n . opens the current directory in a new window. Quoting is required when a path contains spaces, such as subl "C:Work Filesplan.txt".

Is subl.exe safe?
A copy inside a normal Sublime Text installation directory is consistent with the legitimate helper. Sublime’s Windows documentation lists these typical locations:
C:Program FilesSublime Textfor a standard 64-bit installation.C:Program Files (x86)Sublime Textfor a 32-bit installation on 64-bit Windows.C:Program FilesSublime Texton 32-bit Windows.
Location is evidence, not proof. Malware can be renamed subl.exe or placed in a directory that merely looks plausible. Treat an unexpected copy, a file launched from a temporary or user-download folder, or a file with no valid signature as suspicious until it has been checked.
Find the copy Windows is using
- Open Command Prompt or PowerShell.
- Run
where.exe subl. - Read every path returned. If several copies appear, the first one is normally the copy selected through
Path.
If the command returns nothing, Windows cannot find subl.exe through the current Path. That is a configuration problem, not evidence that the file is malicious.

Check the Authenticode signature in PowerShell
Microsoft’s Get-AuthenticodeSignature cmdlet reports the Authenticode signature information for a file. Run it against the exact path found above:

Get-AuthenticodeSignature -FilePath "C:Program FilesSublime Textsubl.exe"Inspect the Status, signer and certificate fields. An unsigned file has blank signature fields. A valid signature supports the file’s provenance and integrity, but it is not a substitute for an antivirus scan when malware is suspected.
Check with Sigcheck
Microsoft’s Sigcheck utility can display a file’s version number, timestamp, and digital-signature details, including certificate chains. Use it on the same executable and compare the reported information with the installation you expect. A signature check cannot prove that every process on the computer is safe; it only helps establish whether this particular file appears authentic and unchanged.
Fix “subl is not recognized”
When the full path launches successfully but subl does not, the executable is present and the remaining issue is usually Path or a shell that has not reloaded the updated environment.
1. Confirm the executable directly
In PowerShell, run:
& "C:Program FilesSublime Textsubl.exe" --versionUse the actual path returned by where.exe or the folder where Sublime Text is installed. A version string confirms that Windows can execute that file. If PowerShell reports that the file does not exist, skip to the repair or reinstall section.

2. Add the installation folder to Path
- Press the Windows key and search for environment variables.
- Open Edit the system environment variables, then select Environment Variables.
- Under User variables (preferred when only your account needs the command) or System variables (for all users), select Path and choose Edit.
- Select New and enter the folder containing
subl.exe, for exampleC:Program FilesSublime TextorC:Program Files (x86)Sublime Text. - Choose OK on each dialog to save the change.
Add the directory, not the full executable filename. Do not replace the existing entries; removing them can break other commands.
3. Start a new shell
Existing Command Prompt and PowerShell windows retain the old environment. Close them, open a new window, and test:
where.exe subl
subl --version
subl -hIf the new shell still finds an old copy, inspect the order of the Path entries and remove or move obsolete Sublime Text directories. If a script, editor integration or terminal application starts its own environment, restart that application as well.

4. Check quoting and aliases
For a path containing spaces, invoke the executable with PowerShell’s call operator and quotes:

In Command Prompt, where.exe subl shows the executable locations. These checks prevent an alias or a different program from being mistaken for Sublime Text.
Use Safe Mode to isolate crashes and package problems
Sublime Text Safe Mode disables customizations. It is useful when Sublime Text opens and immediately closes, freezes, displays errors, or behaves normally only on a new installation. Close all Sublime Text windows first, then run:
subl --safe-modeSafe Mode uses the alternate Windows data directory %AppData%Sublime Text (Safe Mode). Sublime states that this directory is fully erased when Safe Mode starts. Do not store documents, settings or package work there.

- It works in Safe Mode: the cause is likely a third-party package, theme, plugin, or local customization. Return to normal mode and disable recently added or updated packages one at a time until the failing component is identified.
- It fails in Safe Mode too: customizations are less likely to be responsible. Check the executable’s signature and installation, then test a repair or clean reinstall.
- The command itself is not found: Safe Mode cannot diagnose a missing
Pathentry. Fix command resolution first or launch the executable by its full path with--safe-mode.
Repair a missing or damaged subl.exe
subl.exe is a Sublime Text program file, not a protected Windows component. If the file is missing, fails its signature check, or the direct version command produces an application error, repair the Sublime Text installation first.
Reinstall from the official source
- Back up personal projects and any settings or packages you need.
- Uninstall Sublime Text through Settings → Apps → Installed apps (the exact label can vary by Windows version).
- Download the installer from Sublime Text’s official distribution channel and select the edition appropriate for your Windows architecture.
- Install it into the normal program directory, then verify the resulting
subl.exepath and signature. - Re-add the installation folder to
Pathif the installer did not do so, open a new shell, and runsubl --version.
A reinstall replaces the application files; it does not guarantee that a problematic package or custom setting will be fixed. Use Safe Mode before restoring customizations so that a damaged package does not immediately reproduce the problem.
Do not run an unexpected copy
If the only copy is in an unfamiliar directory or has an invalid or absent signature, do not launch it merely to see what happens. Disconnecting the computer from sensitive work, preserving the file for analysis, and running your normal, up-to-date antivirus scan are safer responses. Delete or quarantine it according to your security software’s guidance, then obtain Sublime Text from the official source.
When Windows System File Checker applies
Microsoft documents System File Checker (SFC) for protected Windows system files. It is not a repair mechanism for a third-party Sublime Text executable. Use it when other symptoms indicate broader Windows file corruption, such as multiple built-in Windows programs failing or protected system components reporting errors.

Run SFC from an elevated Command Prompt when the evidence points to Windows corruption. Running it against a missing or damaged subl.exe will not restore Sublime Text; reinstall the editor instead.

A complete troubleshooting sequence
- Run
where.exe subland record every returned path. - Compare the selected path with the normal Sublime Text installation directories.
- Run
Get-AuthenticodeSignatureor Sigcheck against that exact file. - If the file is legitimate but the command is missing, add its folder to
Path, open a new shell, and retry. - Run
subl --safe-modeto separate package or customization failures from application failures. - If the file is absent, damaged or fails direct execution, reinstall Sublime Text from the official source.
- Use SFC only when other evidence indicates protected Windows-file corruption.
This order starts with non-destructive checks, identifies whether the failure is shell-related or application-related, and avoids using a Windows repair tool on a file it does not own.
