SEGA describes the project as a 50-year story told through five city settings. The game is not released yet, so its combat depth, performance, final regional ratings and overall quality cannot be judged from the announcements alone.

What is Stranger Than Heaven?
Stranger Than Heaven is a forthcoming single-player action-adventure game developed by RGG Studio and published by SEGA. Its central idea is an extended character journey: the narrative covers five decades and follows men searching for somewhere they can call home. SEGA’s English release headline describes that premise as “A Five Decade Battle for a Place to Call Home.” That wording is marketing copy, not a quotation attributed to a named speaker.

The opening chapter is set in San Francisco, but the five Japanese settings that define the broader structure are Kokura, Kure, Minami, Atami and Shinjuku. This is an upcoming title rather than a released game; as of October 2026, there are no launch reviews or independent hands-on assessments of its systems.

Who is Makoto Daito, and what is the story?
A teenager caught between two identities
The opening follows Makoto Daito, a teenager born to an American father and a Japanese mother. SEGA says his appearance makes him a target of persecution in 1915 San Francisco. After losing both parents, Makoto decides to travel to Japan, his mother’s homeland, in the hope of finding a place where he belongs.
The voyage that changes his life
Makoto sneaks aboard a suspicious ship. A fateful encounter during that voyage redirects his life and begins the larger story. The ship and its passengers are therefore an inciting mystery, but the announced material does not reveal the complete chain of events that follows.
What is and is not known about the ending
SEGA presents the San Francisco episode as the beginning of a long journey, not a synopsis of the full plot. The ultimate destination, Makoto’s eventual relationships and the precise way the five eras connect have not been disclosed. It is safer to understand the belonging theme and the five-decade structure as the confirmed framework, rather than assume that every major plot turn has already been revealed.
The five eras and their city inspirations
Each period uses an imagined setting inspired by a real Japanese city and its historical character. SEGA’s descriptions establish the atmosphere and social backdrop, but they do not claim to be documentary recreations of those places.
| Year | City inspiration | Context SEGA describes |
|---|---|---|
| 1915 | Kokura, Fukuoka | Steelworks and a lively working population |
| 1929 | Kure, Hiroshima | Naval shipyards and strong yakuza influence |
| 1943 | Minami, Osaka | A major entertainment district amid international tensions |
| 1951 | Atami, Shizuoka | A postwar tourist destination |
| 1965 | Shinjuku, Tokyo | A chaotic major entertainment district |
The first row needs a qualification: Makoto’s story opens in San Francisco in 1915, while Kokura is the Japanese city inspiration associated with that same year. San Francisco is the narrative starting point; it is not one of the five Japanese era-city settings in SEGA’s overview.

1915: Kokura’s industrial energy
The Kokura-inspired chapter is associated with steelworks and a busy working population. That setting gives the earliest Japanese period an industrial, labor-oriented character and contrasts with Makoto’s initial experience in San Francisco.
1929: Kure, shipyards and organized power
Kure is presented through its naval shipyards and a strong yakuza presence. The combination suggests a city shaped by military production and competing forms of authority, although the announcements do not specify which characters or missions will represent those forces.
1943: Minami during wartime tension
Minami, Osaka, is described as a major entertainment district during a period of international tension. Its entertainment economy is important because show-business systems are also part of the announced gameplay, linking the historical environment to Makoto’s possible career activities.
1951: Atami’s postwar tourism
The Atami-inspired chapter takes place in a postwar tourist destination. This period shifts the tone from wartime uncertainty toward travel, leisure and rebuilding, but SEGA has not published a full account of the businesses, landmarks or conflicts players will encounter there.
1965: A chaotic Shinjuku
The final listed setting is a 1965 version of Shinjuku, Tokyo, characterized as a chaotic entertainment district. It represents the latest point in the announced five-decade span and closes the currently known sequence of historical city inspirations.

How the announced gameplay works
Flexible brawling combat
SEGA describes a flexible combat system intended to convey the raw physicality of brawling. That establishes the game’s close-quarters action focus, but the published announcements do not establish the final control scheme, number of styles, difficulty balance, enemy variety or how combat changes between eras.
City activities feed character growth
A September 2026 SEGA update says ordinary activities—including walking, eating and recreation—connect to character growth and skill unlocks. The amount of time players spend in each era affects Makoto’s abilities. In practical terms, exploration and downtime are presented as progression choices rather than purely decorative diversions.
Makoto as an impresario
The game also includes show-business systems. Makoto can act as an impresario and pursue success in entertainment, an especially relevant feature for settings such as Minami and 1965 Shinjuku. SEGA has not yet detailed the management rules, performers, schedules, financial systems or consequences of those choices.
| Announced element | What SEGA has confirmed | Still unknown before release |
|---|---|---|
| Combat | Flexible brawling designed to feel physically raw | Controls, styles, balance, enemy design and difficulty options |
| Daily city life | Walking, eating and recreation can support growth and unlock skills | Activity list, resource costs, time limits and progression depth |
| Entertainment | Makoto can work as an impresario and pursue show-business success | Management mechanics, cast size, failure states and rewards |
| Era choices | How players spend time in each era affects Makoto’s abilities | Whether choices permanently alter missions, endings or cities |
Cast, music and Tupac’s appearance
SEGA’s May 2026 overview names Yu Shirota, Dean Fujioka, Snoop Dogg, Moeka Hoshi, Tori Kelly, Akio Otsuka, Tokuma Nishioka, Satoshi Fujihara of OFFICIAL HIGE DANDISM, Cordell Broadus and Ado among the cast. A June announcement added Tupac Shakur.
SEGA says RGG Studio worked with Amaru Entertainment when creating Tupac’s character design and used archival footage and photographs as references. That confirms the production’s use of historical reference material; it does not by itself disclose the character’s exact role, amount of screen time or whether every listed performer is providing the same type of performance.

Rating and age guidance
SEGA’s September 2026 Japanese update lists a CERO D rating, intended for ages 17 and older in Japan. That is Japanese rating information. Ratings for other territories were not confirmed in the announcements cited here, so parents and buyers should check the classification displayed for their own region.
Is Stranger Than Heaven the same as Project Century?
“Project Century” was an earlier public working label used in coverage before the current title was announced. The game is now officially presented by SEGA as Stranger Than Heaven. The working label is useful only when identifying older announcements or discussions; it is not the current product name.
What remains unknown before launch?
Several important buying and gameplay questions remain open because the game has not released:

- The depth of the impresario system and the consequences of spending time in each era have not been demonstrated in a finished build.
- SEGA has not disclosed a complete plot summary, final mission count or the ending.
- Regional age ratings outside Japan, final local prices and launch-day retail inventory remain unconfirmed.
- The exact contents and pricing of digital Standard and Deluxe editions outside Japan have not been fully itemized in the cited announcements.
Those gaps do not change the core identity of the project: it is an unreleased RGG Studio action-adventure built around Makoto Daito’s five-decade search for belonging, with brawling, city-life progression and entertainment-management elements. They do mean that judgments about quality or value should wait for a playable release and region-specific product information.
