What Is Starlink Direct to Cell? How Satellite-to-Phone Service Works

Starlink Direct to Cell is a satellite-to-phone service: specially equipped Starlink satellites act like cellular base stations in orbit and connect compatible LTE phones through participating mobile operators. It is designed to extend cellular service beyond ordinary tower coverage without a Starlink dish or a special satellite handset. Whether you can use it depends on your carrier, country, phone and service terms.

How Starlink Direct to Cell works

A Direct to Cell satellite carries an LTE modem, or eNodeB, that performs the role of a cellular base station. Its phased-array antenna and onboard technology are designed to communicate with ordinary phones, whose antennas and transmit power are built for terrestrial networks.

The mobile operator is part of the connection, not an optional extra. Operators provide LTE spectrum and integrate the service with their networks in a way Starlink has compared to roaming. In a February 2025 announcement, Starlink said partner spectrum was in the 1.6–2.7 GHz range. Satellite traffic can use the Starlink constellation and laser backhaul, Starlink’s network and ground infrastructure, and then connect to the operator’s core network.

Because satellites move quickly in relation to people on the ground, the system must manage Doppler shift, timing, latency, beam placement and handoffs. Starlink identifies phased-array antennas, custom silicon and software as elements of its approach. These are company descriptions of the system, not independent performance tests.

What you need—and what you do not

Starlink says Direct to Cell is designed for compatible LTE phones without specialized additional hardware. That does not mean every LTE phone is eligible everywhere: supported handsets, carrier plans and approved markets depend on the participating operator and its terms.

  • You need: an eligible phone and mobile service with a participating operator where Direct to Cell is available.
  • You do not need: a Starlink dish, user terminal or Wi-Fi router for the phone-to-satellite connection.

A Starlink user terminal and router are for Starlink’s separate satellite broadband service. Direct to Cell connects a phone to a satellite as part of a mobile operator’s service; purchasing a broadband terminal does not substitute for carrier access.

What the service can do, and where it is available

Capabilities and commercial availability vary by market and can change over time. Starlink’s February 2025 announcement said satellite messaging was commercially available in the United States through T-Mobile and in New Zealand through One NZ. It also described testing with partners in Australia, Canada, Chile and Japan. Those were statements about the rollout at that time, not a complete current availability list.

A later Starlink Mobile page describes messaging, data through apps and voice through apps, while presenting native calling and broader capabilities as future service. Its partner listings should not be read as proof that every operator has launched or is selling a plan in every listed country. Check your operator for current availability, supported functions, phone eligibility, plan terms and emergency-use conditions.

In its 2025 progress report, Starlink said it launched more than 650 satellites in 18 months and that more than 12 million people had connected at least once. The latter is a company-reported cumulative reach figure; it is not a count of active subscribers or an independently measured user total.

How to check whether you can use it

  1. Check your country and mobile operator. Look for a current Direct to Cell or satellite-to-phone announcement from your carrier; a name on a partner page alone does not establish a commercially available plan.
  2. Confirm the supported functions. Ask whether the offering supports messaging, app-based data or voice, or native cellular voice. Do not assume that one capability implies the others.
  3. Verify your exact phone and plan. Carrier eligibility rules can be narrower than general LTE compatibility. Confirm any plan requirements and service terms directly with the operator.
  4. Review location and emergency limitations. Ask about sky visibility, coverage at your location and emergency-use terms. The reviewed company material does not establish a single coverage or reliability guarantee for every location.

Starlink’s official technical and rollout information is available in its Direct to Cell technology overview, its 2025 progress report and the Starlink Mobile page. Its February 2025 launch announcement is titled Starlink Direct to Cell Service Now Available; the cited announcement and progress report are company statements, not independent measurements.
