Start with the 1994 Stargate film, then watch Stargate SG-1. For the simplest first viewing, finish all 10 SG-1 seasons, watch the two follow-up films, then watch all five seasons of Stargate Atlantis and the two seasons of Stargate Universe. Alternating SG-1 and Atlantis seasons is an optional way to follow their original broadcast overlap, not a requirement.
Stargate is a connected science-fiction franchise built around ancient, ring-shaped portals that create wormholes between worlds. Its main live-action story runs from the 1994 film through SG-1, Atlantis and Universe, with an animated series, a prequel web series and two direct-to-video films as additional branches.

What is Stargate?
Stargate began with the 1994 science-fiction film directed by Roland Emmerich and co-written by Emmerich and Dean Devlin. The film introduced the franchise’s defining idea: an ancient, ring-shaped device can establish a wormhole to another Stargate, allowing travelers to reach distant worlds almost instantly. The television stories expand that premise from a single discovery into an exploration network spanning the galaxy.

The franchise’s central live-action arc consists of the original film, the three television series and two films that continue SG-1. Stargate Origins and Stargate Infinity broaden the screen lineup, while tie-in novels provide optional reading rather than required screen viewing.
The Stargate screen universe at a glance
| Title | Format | Release period | Scope in the franchise |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stargate | Feature film | 1994 | Introduces the Stargate device and the setting expanded by the television series. |
| Stargate SG-1 | Live-action series, 10 seasons | 1997–2007 | Earth’s military exploration program and the franchise’s longest central story. |
| Stargate Infinity | Animated series | 2002–2003 | An additional animated branch for completionist viewers. |
| Stargate Atlantis | Live-action series, five seasons | 2004–2009 | An expedition searching for the Ancients’ lost city. |
| The Ark of Truth | Direct-to-video film | 2008 | Continues the SG-1 storyline after its television finale. |
| Continuum | Direct-to-video film | 2008 | Another SG-1 follow-up film. |
| Stargate Universe | Live-action series, two seasons | 2009–2011 | A multinational team aboard the Ancient ship Destiny. |
| Stargate Origins | Prequel web series | 2018 release; story set in 1939 | An optional prequel branch set decades before the 1994 film. |
The three live-action series total 17 seasons. That figure, used by the physical collection listing from Visual Entertainment, describes the amount of television included; it is not an audience or popularity statistic.
What the Stargate device does
A Stargate is a large ring covered with symbols. Entering a sequence of symbols selects another gate, and the device forms a wormhole between the two locations. The result is a practical travel route between planets that would otherwise be separated by enormous distances.
That mechanism gives the franchise a clear storytelling engine. A team can leave Earth, investigate a new world and return through the same network, while a hostile power can use the gates to threaten Earth. The television series use this setup for exploration, diplomacy, military missions and long-running conflicts rather than treating the portal as a one-off plot device.
The best first-time viewing order
There is no studio-mandated order that requires viewers to alternate every episode. The following sequence keeps the main story understandable while preserving the important handoffs between shows and films.
1. Watch the 1994 film
The original Stargate film is the clearest entry point. It establishes the ring-shaped portal, the wormhole concept and the basic setting before the television continuity adds its own characters and history.

2. Watch Stargate SG-1 seasons 1–7
Begin the main television run with the first seven seasons of SG-1. This is the franchise’s foundational series: Earth’s exploration team develops the gate program, discovers how broad the network is and establishes the continuity that later shows reference.
3. Choose a simple or broadcast-conscious way through seasons 8–10 and Atlantis
During the original broadcast period, SG-1 seasons 8–10 and Atlantis seasons 1–3 ran in parallel. You have two sensible choices:
- Simple path: finish SG-1 seasons 8–10 first, then continue with the films and Atlantis. This avoids switching casts and settings and is easiest to manage.
- Broadcast-continuity path: alternate the corresponding SG-1 and Atlantis seasons. This preserves the broad period in which the stories originally unfolded, but it requires more tracking and offers no essential advantage for understanding the plot.
GateWorld’s “Optimized Stargate Watch Order,” published in September 2024, provides a more detailed interleaving plan for viewers who want episode-level continuity. The broad season overlap is enough for most first-time viewers; there is no need to interrupt a season every week unless that kind of precision is enjoyable to you.
4. Watch The Ark of Truth after the SG-1 finale
The Ark of Truth follows the conclusion of SG-1. Place it after season 10. It also falls before the Atlantis season-three finale, so viewers following the broadcast-conscious route should watch it before reaching that point in Atlantis.
5. Watch Continuum as the other SG-1 follow-up
Continuum is a second 2008 film continuing the SG-1 branch. Watching both films after season 10 keeps the SG-1 material together. The films are separate from the regular season episodes, so they are easy to identify in a watchlist.

7. Watch Stargate Universe
Finish the core live-action journey with the two seasons of Stargate Universe. Its multinational crew and the Destiny setting make it a distinct next chapter rather than a direct continuation of the same team’s weekly missions.
Two practical watch-order plans
| Plan | Sequence | Why choose it | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Simple first watch | Stargate (1994) → SG-1 seasons 1–10 → The Ark of Truth → Continuum → Atlantis seasons 1–5 → Universe seasons 1–2 | One series at a time, with the SG-1 films immediately after the finale. | It does not mirror the original broadcast alternation between SG-1 and Atlantis. |
| Broadcast-conscious | Stargate → SG-1 seasons 1–7 → alternate the overlapping SG-1 and Atlantis seasons → place The Ark of Truth before the Atlantis season-three finale → watch Continuum with the SG-1 follow-ups → finish Atlantis → Universe | Keeps the two shows in the period in which they originally aired. | Requires a more complicated list; the continuity benefit is mainly for enthusiasts. |
| Completionist | Either core plan, followed or preceded by Stargate Origins and Stargate Infinity | Includes every major screen branch listed in the franchise guide. | The prequel and animated series are optional additions, not necessary preparation for the main live-action arc. |
Stargate’s timeline: release order and story order
Release order is usually the most useful order because the franchise was designed to reveal its history gradually. A chronological approach is possible, but it begins with a much later-made prequel and is therefore less effective as an introduction.
| Story or release point | Entry | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| 1939 in the story | Stargate Origins | Optional prequel branch. Its story predates the 1994 film, but the series itself was released in 2018. |
| 1994 release | Stargate | Best starting point for a new viewer because it introduces the gate and the setting. |
| 1997–2007 release | Stargate SG-1, seasons 1–10 | The main Earth-based exploration story. |
| 2002–2003 release | Stargate Infinity | Animated optional viewing; it is not needed to follow the live-action arc. |
| 2004–2009 release | Stargate Atlantis, seasons 1–5 | Runs partly alongside late SG-1 and then continues after it. |
| 2008 release | The Ark of Truth and Continuum | Both are SG-1 follow-up films; The Ark of Truth follows the series finale and precedes the Atlantis season-three finale. |
| 2009–2011 release | Stargate Universe, seasons 1–2 | The final live-action branch in the listed screen lineup. |
A chronological-first plan would put Origins before everything else because its story is set in 1939. That is a valid experiment for a returning fan, but a first-time viewer generally gets more context by starting with the 1994 film and following release-era continuity.

What each major series contributes
Stargate SG-1: the foundation
SG-1 is the longest-running live-action branch, with ten seasons released from 1997 through 2007. Its premise is an Earth military exploration team using the Stargate to visit other worlds. Because it establishes the franchise’s principal institutions, technology and threats, it is the best place to spend the most viewing time before branching into the other series.
Stargate Atlantis: the Ancient-city expedition
Atlantis ran for five seasons from 2004 to 2009. Its core mission is the search for the Ancients’ lost city, giving the franchise a new expeditionary setting while retaining links to SG-1. The first three seasons overlap the final three seasons of SG-1 in release history, which is why some viewers prefer an alternating watch order.
Stargate Universe: Destiny and a multinational crew
Universe ran for two seasons from 2009 to 2011. Its story centers on a multinational team aboard the Ancient ship Destiny. That premise changes the rhythm of the franchise: instead of returning from each mission to an established Earth base, the characters’ circumstances are tied to a much more remote vessel and ongoing journey.

Stargate Origins: an optional prequel
Origins is a 2018 prequel web series whose story takes place in 1939. Its earlier setting makes it the only listed screen branch that clearly predates the film’s story. Because it was produced decades after the film and the main television continuity, it works better as optional completionist viewing than as a first introduction.
Stargate Infinity: the animated branch
Infinity is an animated series released in 2002–2003. It sits outside the central live-action viewing path. Include it if your goal is to see every screen title in the franchise guide; skip it if you want the connected live-action story and its two SG-1 films.
How the films fit with the television shows
The 1994 film is the starting point, not a sequel to any television story. SG-1 then develops the film’s premise across ten seasons. The two 2008 direct-to-video films belong to the SG-1 branch: The Ark of Truth is explicitly after the SG-1 finale, while Continuum is another follow-up film.
The films should not be treated as a separate rebooted trilogy. They are extensions of the television continuity and are most useful after you know the SG-1 characters and its long-running conflicts. Watching them before SG-1 removes the context they expect.

The franchise’s future is unsettled as of October 17, 2026. Amazon MGM’s earlier franchise guide announced a new series with Martin Gero as showrunner and Brad Wright and Joseph Mallozzi as consulting producers. That announcement remains useful historical information, but it is not a current confirmation that the project is moving forward.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteOn June 3, 2026, Space.com reported that Amazon had elected not to proceed with the Gero project. The article attributed the reported reasoning to an unnamed Variety source; Mallozzi publicly disputed the suggestion that the project lacked broad appeal. The safe distinction is that the cancellation was reported, while the reported rationale was contested.

A fan-run #SaveStargate press page updated October 11, 2026 claims that Amazon MGM announced a new series with Jac Schaeffer on October 10. The page says the campaign is unofficial and is not affiliated with Amazon MGM. No official studio announcement or independent confirmation has established that claim, so it should not be presented as a confirmed new series.
“I spent five years at the franchise working across all three series, Stargate taught me everything about making television—it’s written into my DNA,” Martin Gero, showrunner and executive producer.
That quote comes from the earlier franchise announcement and describes Gero’s connection to the property; it does not resolve the later status of his proposed series.

Streaming
Streaming rights change by country, service and date. Amazon’s franchise guide includes Prime Video watch links, and a Prime Video listing for SG-1 season 10 has appeared, but that does not establish that every season, film or series is currently available in every territory. Search your local catalog for each title before committing to a watch order, especially for the two films and the less commonly listed animated or web entries.
Physical Blu-ray editions
Visual Entertainment lists The Stargate Blu-ray Collection, combining SG-1, Atlantis and Universe, along with separate complete-series Blu-ray sets. The collection listing describes 17 seasons and hundreds of episodes. Its current regional specification is Region A for players sold in the United States and Canada. Prices and stock can change, so check the distributor’s current listing and make sure your player supports Region A before buying.
Books and short stories
Fandemonium’s order form lists novels for SG-1 and Atlantis, as well as short-story anthologies. These books are supplementary reading, not required screen canon for the viewing order above. Treat retailer stock and publication availability as changeable, and start with the shows if you are new to the franchise.
Which viewing approach should you choose?
- You want the least complicated route: use the simple first-watch sequence and finish one series before moving to the next.
- You enjoy continuity details: alternate the overlapping SG-1 and Atlantis seasons, using an episode-level guide such as GateWorld’s September 2024 optimized order.
- You want the essential story only: watch the 1994 film, all of SG-1, both SG-1 films, all of Atlantis and all of Universe.
- You want every screen production: add the 2018 Origins prequel and the 2002–2003 Infinity animated series as optional branches.
- You prefer ownership: verify the Region A requirement for the Visual Entertainment Blu-ray listings and confirm that the set contains the titles you want.
- You are starting from a streaming service: check each season and film in your local catalog rather than assuming one service has the complete franchise.
The key decision is simplicity versus broadcast continuity. Both routes lead through the same central live-action stories; alternating shows is an enhancement for careful viewers, not a barrier to getting started.
