Short answer: star.exe is a generic Windows executable name, not one specific Microsoft component. A copy installed with a known application and signed by that publisher can be legitimate, while an unexpected copy—especially one running from a temporary or user-profile folder—may be malicious. The filename alone cannot prove either case.
To judge a particular file, identify its full path, parent application, publisher, digital signature, hash, startup behavior, network activity and antivirus verdict. Do not run, whitelist, delete or replace an unfamiliar star.exe until you have completed that check.

What star.exe means
Windows does not reserve executable names globally. Unrelated developers can ship files with the same name, so two files called star.exe may have entirely different purposes. SourceForge’s star-bin project distributes a legitimate star.exe binary for the GNU star tape archiver. In contrast, PC Matic’s generic record for the name lists no known vendor or product. Those examples show why the name is only a starting point, not an identity.

It may sit in that program’s installation directory, have a publisher that matches the vendor, and carry a valid digital signature. An unexplained copy in a temporary directory, Downloads, a profile folder or the Recycle Bin deserves extra scrutiny, but location alone is not conclusive either.

Is star.exe safe?
There is no universal yes-or-no answer. Safety depends on the exact file and what it does on your computer.
| Evidence | What it suggests | What it does not prove |
|---|---|---|
| Installed inside a known application’s folder | The file may belong to that application. | A familiar folder does not guarantee the file is unchanged or safe. |
| Valid digital signature from the expected publisher | The signed code was issued by that publisher and has not changed since signing. | A signature does not mean the software is appropriate for your situation, and a stolen or abused certificate is possible. |
| Unsigned or unknown publisher | There is less reputation information to rely on, so investigate further. | Unsigned does not automatically mean malware. |
Running from Temp, Downloads or an unfamiliar profile path |
This is a higher-risk context, particularly when paired with persistence or network traffic. | Some installers and legitimate utilities also use temporary locations. |
| Antivirus detection or suspicious behavior | Quarantine and investigate before allowing execution. | A single detection name does not identify every file with that name. |
Independent analysis illustrates the distinction. On August 5, 2025, ANY.RUN reported malicious activity for one Star.exe sample associated with a stealer; the observed process ran from C:UsersadminAppDataLocalTempStar.exe. ThreatInfo separately described a Star.exe sample associated with StarProject as Trojan.Downloader, last analyzed May 8, 2022. These are reports about individual samples, not a verdict on every file named star.exe, and they are not prevalence statistics.
Microsoft’s guidance treats unknown software as higher risk until its reputation and behavior are established. An uncommon filename is not automatically malicious, but an unexplained executable should remain untrusted until you verify it.

Use these checks while the file is not running if possible. If you suspect active compromise, stop entering sensitive information and disconnect the affected computer from networks needed for work or banking. Do not open the file merely to see what happens.
- Capture the full path. If a popup names the file, copy the path from the message. Otherwise open Task Manager with
Ctrl+Shift+Esc, select the Details tab, findstar.exe, right-click it and choose Open file location. If the process is gone, search File Explorer for the exact filename and record every copy. - Record ownership clues. Right-click the file, choose Properties, and note the General tab’s location and size, the Details tab’s product and original filename fields, and the Digital Signatures tab. A missing signature, an unexpected publisher or a product description that does not match installed software is a reason to pause.
- Identify the parent application. In Task Manager, add or inspect the process relationship where available, then check Open file location. Look in Settings > Apps > Installed apps for software installed at the same time and in the same directory. An error dialog may also name the program that attempted to launch the file.
- Calculate a hash without executing the file. In PowerShell, run
Get-FileHash -LiteralPath "C:fullpathstar.exe" -Algorithm SHA256, replacing the path with the one you recorded. Save the result. A hash is useful only when compared with a value published by the legitimate software vendor or a trusted security service; it is not a safety verdict by itself. - Check when and how it starts. In Task Manager’s Startup apps tab, note any entry that points to the file. Also inspect the application’s own settings and Windows’ scheduled tasks if the executable returns after a restart. Record the command or path before disabling anything so you can explain what changed.
- Look for behavior, not just spelling. Repeated launches, attempts to remain in startup locations, unexpected outbound connections, credential prompts or rapid creation of additional files are warning signs. A known application that starts the file only when you use a documented feature is a different situation.

1. Isolate the computer and protect accounts
Do not run the executable or add an exclusion for it. If it was active while you used email, banking or work accounts, disconnect from the internet or the affected network when practical. From a different, clean device, change passwords for accounts that may have been exposed and review sign-in and session activity. Enable multifactor authentication where the service supports it. Isolation limits further communication while you investigate; it does not establish that the file is malware.
2. Update Microsoft Defender
Open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection, choose Protection updates, and select Check for updates. Security intelligence must be current before a scan. Microsoft describes Defender Antivirus as attempting to block malware before it infects a device, but no scanner can identify every unknown sample immediately.
Recommended Free Tools
3. Run a full scan
In Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Scan options, select Full scan and start it. Keep the computer powered and let the scan finish. If Defender detects star.exe or related objects, choose Quarantine or Remove as offered, then restart when prompted. Do not restore the file merely because an application complains; first establish which application owns it.
4. Use Microsoft Defender Offline when the file persists
If the executable returns after a full scan, launches before Windows is fully loaded, or prevents normal security tools from working, select Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Scan options > Microsoft Defender Offline scan. Save open work first. Windows restarts into a separate scanning environment, which can inspect files that are difficult to remove while the normal desktop is running. Review the protection history after Windows starts again.
5. Use Microsoft Safety Scanner for a second manual check
Download Microsoft Safety Scanner only from Microsoft’s official site. It is a manually triggered malware-removal tool, not a permanently installed replacement for Defender. Download a fresh copy before a new scan because each download expires 10 days after download. Run the scanner with administrator rights, choose the most complete scan available, and follow its quarantine or removal instructions. Keep the scan result and time in your notes.

6. Remove the owning software through Windows
If scans identify an unwanted application, uninstall it from Settings > Apps > Installed apps (or Apps & features on older Windows versions), rather than deleting an isolated executable. Removing the parent program can also remove services, startup entries and supporting files. If you recognize the program but no longer need it, uninstall it normally and restart. If you need it, use its official repair or reinstall process after the machine is clean.
7. Check persistence after remediation
After restarting, verify that the file has not reappeared in Task Manager’s Startup apps, the application’s startup settings or scheduled tasks. Remove only entries you can confidently associate with the unwanted program; export or record a task’s command before deleting it. If the same executable returns, run another Defender scan and investigate the process or installer that recreates it instead of repeatedly deleting the visible copy.
8. Preserve useful evidence
Keep the original path, file hash, publisher information, detection name, scan date and any parent-process details. If you need help from an administrator or security professional, this information is more useful than a screenshot showing only the filename. Do not upload confidential files to public scanners without checking the service’s privacy terms.
How to fix “star.exe missing,” “star.exe failed” and startup errors
These messages are application-specific. Windows does not have one universal star.exe component that can be repaired with a single download. The correct fix is to identify the program that requested the file and repair that program.
Find the requesting application
Read the complete error text, including any folder path or program name. Open Task Manager when the popup appears and check which process is active. In File Explorer, inspect the directory named in the message. Look at Settings > Apps > Installed apps and sort by install date if the problem began after a recent installation. If the file is in a known application’s directory and the publisher and signature match, treat the issue as that application’s installation problem rather than as a generic Windows failure.

Repair before reinstalling
For supported applications, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps, select the application’s menu, choose Advanced options, and use Repair when available. Repair normally keeps user data while replacing damaged program components. If the app provides its own repair command, use the vendor’s documented option. The labels differ between Windows editions and applications, so do not assume every program offers the same controls.
Reinstall from the official publisher
If repair does not restore the file, uninstall the application, restart Windows, and download a current installer from the software publisher you recognize. Confirm that the installer’s name, publisher and digital signature are consistent before running it. Reinstalling from an official package can restore a legitimate star.exe that was removed or corrupted; it also avoids importing a malicious replacement.
Apply Windows and application updates
Install pending updates through Settings > Windows Update and update the application through its built-in updater or official download page. A startup error can result from an old application expecting files that a newer Windows update no longer supplies, or from a partial application update. Restart after updates and test the program once.
When Defender removed the file
If Windows Security quarantined star.exe and the parent application now fails, do not restore the item automatically. Confirm the detection details, scan the system again, and reinstall the parent application from its official source. If the replacement is immediately detected, stop using that installer and contact the publisher or an administrator with the saved path, hash and detection name.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhen the popup has no identifiable owner
Disable the associated startup entry only after recording its command, then reboot and scan. Search for the exact path in Task Scheduler and in the application folders that remain after uninstalling unknown software. An orphaned shortcut or scheduled task can keep producing a missing-file message even after the executable is gone. Remove the orphaned entry only when you can distinguish it from a required Windows or security task.

Can you delete star.exe?
Do not delete it solely because the filename looks unfamiliar. Deleting a legitimate copy can break the application that installed it, while deleting only the visible malicious file can leave its launcher or persistence mechanism behind. Scan first, identify the owner, and then either uninstall the unwanted program through Windows or let Defender quarantine the detected item. Manual deletion is appropriate only when a trusted administrator or the security tool’s instructions identify the file as unnecessary and no process depends on it.
Never download a replacement from a DLL or EXE aggregation site. Such a download may be unrelated to the application that produced your error, may be unsigned, and can introduce malware under the same generic name.
How to compare two files both named star.exe
| Comparison point | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Provenance | Which installer or application created the file, and did you intentionally install it? |
| Path | Is it in the known application’s installation directory, or in Temp, Downloads, a profile folder or the Recycle Bin? |
| Publisher and signature | Does Properties show the expected publisher and a valid signature? |
| Hash | Does the SHA-256 value match one published by the legitimate vendor or a trusted security reference? |
| Age and timing | Was it created when the parent application was installed or after an unexplained download? |
| Parent process | Which program launches it, and is that relationship expected? |
| Startup persistence | Does it add a startup entry, scheduled task or other launch mechanism? |
| Network activity | Does it make connections that the parent application documents or needs? |
| Security verdict | What do current Defender and Safety Scanner results say about this exact file? |
A signed copy in a known application directory is materially different from an unsigned copy in a temporary folder, but the table is a decision aid, not a substitute for a current scan. The sandbox report on the malicious sample documented executable dropping and startup behavior; those observations should not be generalized to every file with this name.
What the available evidence can—and cannot—tell you
The dated analyses demonstrate that at least some files called Star.exe have been malicious. They do not establish how common infections or errors are, and no authoritative prevalence statistic is available for the filename as a whole. Treat sample dates as the dates of those analyses, not as a count of current threats. A clean result for one copy does not certify another copy with a different path or hash.
When to get specialist help
Ask an experienced administrator or incident-response professional for help if Defender Offline and Safety Scanner continue to find the file, if it returns after removal, if multiple accounts show suspicious sign-ins, or if the computer handles sensitive business or financial data. Provide the path, hash, publisher details, scan results and timeline. Avoid repeatedly experimenting on the affected system, which can destroy evidence or spread a credential-stealing infection.
