What Is Stanford’s Top 2% Scientists List, and How Are Researchers Ranked?

The “Stanford Top 2% Scientists” list is the popular name for a citation database formally titled Updated science-wide author databases of standardized citation indicators. It uses Scopus author and citation data to identify researchers meeting a citation-based selection rule; it is not an award given by Stanford University. The database presents separate career-long and single-year views, which measure different citation windows.

What the “Stanford Top 2%” label refers to

The database is associated with John P. A. Ioannidis and colleagues. Its formal title is Updated science-wide author databases of standardized citation indicators. The familiar “Stanford” label does not mean that Stanford University selects, certifies, or awards the listed researchers. The data are based on Scopus author profiles and citation information.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

That distinction matters because the label can sound like a university honor or a formal judgment of scientific excellence. The dataset is better understood as a large, method-defined collection of citation indicators and selected author records. Its purpose, as reflected in its title and metrics, is to describe citation impact using standardized measures—not to issue a broad verdict about the value of every researcher’s work.

The database organizes researchers across 22 scientific fields and 174 subfields using the Science-Metrix classification. Its stated inclusion rule is to be among the top 100,000 authors by composite c-score or to reach at least the 2nd percentile rank within a subfield. Because there are two routes to inclusion, “top 2%” should not be read as a simple ranking of the top 2% of every scientist worldwide.

In particular, the number “2%” is part of a selection rule that includes a within-subfield percentile route. It does not mean that the dataset necessarily takes exactly two out of every hundred scientists worldwide, or that every entry has been compared directly with every researcher in every discipline. Another route is inclusion among the top 100,000 authors by c-score. When a person’s inclusion is being interpreted, the route, field classification, and dataset version all matter.

The 22-field and 174-subfield organization is also a reminder that research citation patterns are being considered through a classification system, rather than through one undifferentiated scientific category. A reader comparing two researchers should therefore check the subfield as well as the overall record. The classification gives context for the subfield-percentile route; it is not a claim that all the disciplines or subfields have identical citation practices.

How researchers are ranked

The database reports standardized citation indicators and a composite citation score, or c-score. The c-score combines six indicators:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Total citations.
  • The h-index.
  • The co-authorship-adjusted hm-index.
  • Citations to single-author papers.
  • Citations to single- or first-author papers.
  • Citations to single-, first-, or last-author papers.

These components show why the database is not simply a ranking by number of publications. The measures describe citation impact and include information about authorship position on cited papers. Some indicators capture citations across a researcher’s work generally; others focus on citations to work where the researcher is the sole author or occupies particular positions in the author list. The co-authorship-adjusted hm-index adds an adjustment for co-authorship. Together, the indicators provide more than one view of a citation record.

The c-score is intended to reflect citation impact rather than publication productivity. That distinction is easy to miss when looking at a ranked list. A publication count answers how many papers are associated with a record; citation indicators describe how those papers have been cited under the dataset’s chosen measures. The list’s own approach is built around the latter, not a simple tally of output.

The six indicators also make it important not to reduce a result to one number without asking what went into it. Total citations and the h-index are not interchangeable measures, and neither is the same as citations to single-author work or to papers where the researcher is listed first or last. A composite score combines those perspectives into a c-score, but readers should still look at the component indicators when trying to understand what an entry represents.

The methodology describes standardized citation indicators, but the summary information presented here does not specify a set of component weights that would let a reader reproduce the composite c-score with a hand calculation. Avoid assuming that each component counts equally, or that a given indicator alone explains an author’s position. For exact technical definitions or calculation details, consult the current methodology documentation and the original data record rather than inferring a formula from the displayed list.

The database reports metrics and c-scores both with and without self-citations. That offers a useful second view of the citation information. It does not, by itself, establish that self-citations are improper or that one version of the score is automatically the “right” one. Rather, it lets a reader see that the reported result can be examined under both presentations and compare whether the overall picture changes when self-citations are excluded.

For researchers with at least five papers, the database supplies field or subfield percentile information. That minimum-paper condition is worth noting: percentile information is not described as being available in the same way for every author regardless of publication record. The methodology page also describes additional citation and retraction-related data. Those data are part of the broader material available for analysis, but they should not be confused with the six c-score components listed above.

Two routes to selection

A researcher may qualify through the global c-score threshold—being among the top 100,000—or through a subfield percentile threshold of at least the 2nd percentile. Field assignment matters when interpreting the second route. For a particular entry, check its subfield and the selection route rather than assuming that every author was ranked against one undifferentiated worldwide pool.

The two routes explain why the popular name is only shorthand. An entry admitted through the top-100,000 route and an entry admitted through the subfield percentile route have both met a published inclusion criterion, but the path into the dataset is not identical. The stated rule does not say that every listed person occupies a single, comparable position on a worldwide list or that every person represents precisely the same fraction of all scientists.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When a lookup interface shows a person’s record, use the available field and subfield information to understand the context. If the interface identifies a selection route, take that into account too. A rank or inclusion marker viewed without these details can invite an oversimplified comparison: one researcher may be understood in relation to a subfield percentile, while another may meet the global c-score threshold.

Career-long and single-year lists are different measures

The career-long view accumulates citation impact over a researcher’s career up to the dataset’s cutoff. The single-year view uses citations received during one specified recent calendar year. One is a cumulative view; the other is a snapshot of citation activity during that year. A person can appear differently in these views without any contradiction.

Think of the two views as answers to separate questions. The career-long data describe accumulated citation impact over the period covered by the dataset. The single-year data describe citations received in one specified calendar year. Someone with a long accumulated record can be represented differently in a particular year than in a career-wide view; conversely, an active year does not make the cumulative record and the one-year measure equivalent. Neither view should be treated as a substitute for the other.

The lookup page reported version 9 for its 2025 data version, with 243,949 career-long records and 249,310 single-year records. It describes career-long data through 2025 and the single-year list as based on citations received in 2025. Those counts are figures reported by the lookup page, which was updated October 8, 2026—not an independently verified count from the original repository.

The dataset description reproduced on that interface identifies 22 scientific fields and 174 subfields and labels the information as version 9, an August 2026 data update. These details help identify which release the page is presenting. They should not be blurred together with a claim that all counts and dates have been independently confirmed from the original repository.

The lookup page’s snapshot-date wording conflicts: it mentions an August 1, 2025 Scopus snapshot while also saying calculations used author profiles as of August 1, 2026. Do not infer a definitive snapshot date from that interface. For publication-critical count or snapshot details, consult the original Elsevier Data Repository record identified by DOI 10.17632/btchxktzyw.9. The lookup interface also states that it is not affiliated with or operated by the database creators.

This is a practical distinction between a useful search tool and the underlying source. A third-party lookup page can help a reader find records and report release statistics, but its own claims should be attributed to that page. Where its metadata conflicts, the responsible response is to describe the conflict and direct readers to the original repository record for verification—not to silently choose one date.

How to compare entries or versions responsibly

  1. Match the list type. Compare career-long entries with career-long entries, or single-year entries for the same citation year. Do not treat their positions as interchangeable. A career-wide accumulation and a one-year citation measure answer different questions.
  2. Check the version and time window. A later database version may reflect a different cutoff, profile state, or citation window. Record which version is being discussed and which year the single-year measure covers, so a comparison is not mixing releases or periods.
  3. Inspect the field and subfield. These classifications provide context for the percentile-based inclusion route. Since the database uses 22 fields and 174 subfields, a comparison without the classification can conceal how the relevant selection context was defined.
  4. Review the c-score and its components. Look at the component indicators, including versions with and without self-citations, rather than relying only on an overall rank. The composite is built from several measures, so an isolated rank does not explain the shape of the underlying citation record.
  5. Check the Scopus author profile. The result is tied to an author profile, so profile accuracy and author identification are relevant when investigating a specific listing. Make sure the profile being checked belongs to the intended researcher before drawing conclusions from its metrics.
  6. Separate the inclusion question from the quality question. First establish whether the author met the stated citation-based rule in that version. Then keep any broader judgment about research quality or contributions separate, because the dataset does not claim to be a complete assessment of either.

This checklist is useful whether the comparison is between two authors or between two releases for the same author. For example, a reader checking whether an entry appears in a new version should first verify that the same list type and citation year are being viewed, then check the field classification, author profile, and version details. If one of those changes, a different outcome need not mean the person’s work suddenly became better or worse; it may reflect different data or context.

Likewise, if two records show different results after self-citations are treated differently, that is a reason to inspect the reported component values, not a basis for assuming misconduct. The database supplies c-scores and metrics with and without self-citations so that those views can be distinguished. A careful comparison reports which view was used and avoids turning a metric difference into an unsupported claim about intent.

What inclusion does—and does not—show

Inclusion means that, under a particular version, time window, field classification, and Scopus profile, the author met the database’s citation-based selection rule. It is evidence about citation impact under that method, not a general award, a direct measurement of research quality, or a complete account of a person’s contributions. The database description by Ioannidis, Boyack, and Baas cautions: “Citation metrics are widely used and misused,” and says their use should be “tempered and judicious.”

The caution is central to interpreting the label, not a footnote to ignore after seeing a name. Citation indicators are measures used to summarize citation records. The database itself warns against treating them as self-explanatory or using them without restraint. A list entry can tell a reader that the researcher met a stated inclusion rule based on citation indicators; it cannot establish every dimension of research quality, significance, rigor, influence, or contribution.

Nor does the label amount to a Stanford University endorsement. The popular wording is associated with a dataset connected to Ioannidis and colleagues; it should not be rewritten as “Stanford awarded” or “Stanford certified” an individual. If describing an entry in a profile, article, or institutional page, phrase the claim narrowly: the person appears in a particular version of the citation-indicator database, under a particular list type or year, if those details are known.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Likewise, absence from a particular version does not establish that a researcher does poor work. It means the composite indicator did not meet that version’s inclusion rule. Citation coverage, field assignment, author-profile accuracy, and the selected time window are relevant context when checking a specific case.

That is especially important when a reader is trying to explain why a particular researcher is missing. The database is built from Scopus author profiles and citations, so a profile’s accuracy and the relevant data window should be checked. The field or subfield classification also affects how to understand the percentile route. None of these checks guarantees that a person will be included; they help establish what the record and selection rule actually say before drawing a conclusion.

A missing name should therefore prompt a narrower question—whether that author profile met the database’s selection rule in that version—rather than a sweeping conclusion about the person’s scholarship. Similarly, a listed name should not be used as a shortcut for evaluating an entire body of work. The dataset’s own warning about limitations applies in both directions.

Where to verify the methodology and data

Use the database methodology and original repository record for definitions, version information, and underlying data. A third-party lookup page can make records easier to search, but its counts and date statements should be understood as claims made by that interface, especially where its snapshot dates conflict.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The original Elsevier Data Repository record identified for the version discussed here is DOI 10.17632/btchxktzyw.9. It is the appropriate place to verify publication-critical statistics, snapshot details, and release materials. The lookup page is a secondary interface and says that it is not affiliated with or operated by the database creators. Readers should distinguish the record search function from the authority of the dataset’s original documentation.

When citing a result, include enough context for another reader to understand it: whether the entry is career-long or single-year, which citation year or data version is involved, and what field or subfield is displayed. If the exact snapshot date is uncertain because an interface gives conflicting wording, say so rather than presenting a date as settled. This is more useful than quoting a bare rank without the information needed to interpret it.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Stanford’s Top 2% Scientists list?

It is the popular name for the citation database formally titled Updated science-wide author databases of standardized citation indicators, associated with John P. A. Ioannidis and colleagues. It uses Scopus author profiles and citation data. It is not an award conferred by Stanford University.

How are researchers ranked on the list?

The database reports a composite citation score, or c-score, based on six indicators: total citations, the h-index, the co-authorship-adjusted hm-index, and citations to single-author, single- or first-author, and single-, first-, or last-author papers. It also reports metrics with and without self-citations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What does “top 2%” mean?

The stated selection rule is inclusion among the top 100,000 authors by c-score or at or above the 2% percentile rank in a subfield. It should not be taken to mean that the list is simply the top 2% of every scientist worldwide.

What is the difference between the career-long and single-year lists?

The career-long view accumulates citation impact across a researcher’s career through the dataset cutoff. The single-year view is based on citations received during one specified recent calendar year. They measure different windows, so their results are not interchangeable.

Does being on the list mean someone is one of the world’s best scientists?

No. Inclusion means that an author profile met a citation-based selection rule for a particular version, time window, and field classification. The dataset cautions that citation metrics have limitations and should be used judiciously; inclusion is not a complete assessment of research quality or a Stanford award.

If a researcher is not listed, does that mean their work is poor?

No. Absence means the composite indicator did not meet that version’s inclusion rule. Field assignment, Scopus profile accuracy, citation coverage, and the time window are relevant context when checking a particular case.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How can I compare two researchers or two versions fairly?

Compare the same list type and citation year; check the dataset version, field and subfield, and selection route; inspect the c-score components with and without self-citations; and confirm that the Scopus author profile is accurate. Do not compare career-long and single-year positions as though they measured the same thing.

How many records were reported for the 2025 data version?

The lookup page reported 243,949 career-long records and 249,310 single-year records for version 9, describing career-long data through 2025 and a single-year view based on citations received in 2025. These are figures reported by that secondary interface, updated October 8, 2026. Its snapshot-date wording conflicts, so consult the original repository record for publication-critical details.

The Bottom Line

The “Stanford Top 2%” label refers to a Scopus-based citation-indicator database, not a Stanford University award. Its selection rule has two routes, and its career-long and single-year views answer different questions. Treat inclusion as a result under a particular version, time window, field classification, and author profile—not as a complete verdict on a scientist’s work.
