An SSID is your Wi‑Fi network’s name—the text you see when your device lists available wireless networks. Knowing how to find it matters for setup, troubleshooting, and making sure you’re connecting to the correct router and band.
This guide covers what an SSID is and walks you through finding it on Windows, macOS, iPhone/iPad, and Android. If the SSID isn’t showing up, you’ll also learn the most reliable fallback: checking the router itself.

What Is an SSID?
SSID stands for Service Set Identifier. In everyday terms, it’s the Wi‑Fi network name your router broadcasts (when broadcasting is enabled) so devices can discover and connect.

SSID vs. BSSID (Why you sometimes see both)
You may see two identifiers in network tools:
- SSID: The human-readable network name (e.g., MyNetwork).
- BSSID: The router’s wireless radio identifier (a MAC address-like value).
If your router has separate bands (like 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz), you’ll often see different BSSIDs even when the SSID names look similar or identical.
Visible, Hidden, and Broadcast SSIDs
Most routers broadcast the SSID, so it appears in the Wi‑Fi list automatically. Some routers can be configured to hide the SSID, meaning the network won’t show by name—though it still exists and still broadcasts connectivity information for devices that know how to join it.
In hidden-network setups, you typically must enter the SSID manually and provide the correct password.
What You’ll Need Before You Start
- A device that’s currently connected to the Wi‑Fi you care about (or that can view available networks).
- If you’re troubleshooting: the Wi‑Fi password or at least access to the router/admin page.
- If you’re dealing with a dual-band router: confirm whether you want 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, or 6 GHz.
How to Find Your SSID on Desktop
Windows 10/11
Windows usually shows the SSID right in Wi‑Fi status. Use the steps below to find the name of the network you’re currently connected to.
- Click the Wi‑Fi icon in the taskbar (system tray).
- Open Network & Internet settings (or Network settings).
- Go to Status.
- Under Wi‑Fi, look for Network and read the connected network name (that’s the SSID).
If you want the SSID list instead of the connected name:

- Open the Wi‑Fi menu (taskbar icon).
- You’ll see available networks listed by SSID.
macOS (Wi‑Fi status + Network settings)
On macOS, the easiest method is the Wi‑Fi status menu or the Network settings panel.
- Click the Wi‑Fi icon in the macOS menu bar.
- Look for Wi‑Fi: Connected and the network name shown there (that’s the SSID).
For a more detailed confirmation:
- Open System Settings.
- Go to Network > Wi‑Fi.
- Find the Connected to field. The text is your SSID.
On some older macOS versions, you may see System Preferences instead of System Settings.
How to Find Your SSID on Mobile
iPhone and iPad (iOS/iPadOS)
On iPhone and iPad, the SSID is visible under the Wi‑Fi settings screen. If you’re connected, it shows your current network name.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Wi‑Fi.
- Find the NETWORKS list.
- Look for the blue checkmark next to the network you’re connected to. The network name is the SSID.
If the SSID list doesn’t show what you expect, double-check whether Wi‑Fi is turned on and whether you’re in range of the router.
Android (varies by brand)
Android UI differs by manufacturer, but the path is typically similar: Settings > Network & Internet > Wi‑Fi.

To find SSIDs you can see around you:
- Go to the same Wi‑Fi screen.
- Scroll through Available networks. Each entry name is an SSID.
Some Android skins also show “Details” for the currently connected network—often revealing the SSID and other parameters.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf You’re Not Seeing the SSID: Common Causes
Not finding your SSID usually comes down to visibility settings, range, or connecting to the wrong network name (especially with extenders or mesh systems).
SSID is hidden (doesn’t broadcast)
If your router hides the SSID, it won’t appear in the Wi‑Fi list. Your device must join it by entering the SSID manually.
What to try:
- Check the router settings for Hide SSID / Broadcast SSID.
- Use the router label or admin page method below to confirm the exact SSID text.
You’re connected to a different band or extender
Dual-band routers sometimes expose separate names like MyWiFi_2.4 and MyWiFi_5G. Extenders and mesh systems can add their own SSIDs or reuse the same one.
Check what your device is connected to right now (that shown SSID is the one you should use for troubleshooting).

Your device is connected via Ethernet or hotspot
On a laptop, you might be “online” but not on Wi‑Fi. If you’re using Ethernet or a mobile hotspot, the Wi‑Fi SSID won’t match your internet connection.
Verify your connection type in the network status screen (Windows Status, macOS Network, or mobile Wi‑Fi settings).
Wrong Wi‑Fi profile or saved network name mismatch
If you previously connected to a network but the router was renamed, your device may show a stale profile. Re-check the SSID list and connect to the current network name.

- SSID or Network Name
- Wireless Key / Password
- Sometimes separate labels for 2.4G and 5G
Log in to the router admin page
When the label isn’t present or the SSID was changed, use the admin interface.
- Connect to the router: either via Wi‑Fi or Ethernet.
- Open a browser and visit the router’s gateway address. Common defaults include
http://192.168.0.1orhttp://192.168.1.1. - Log in using the admin credentials (often printed on the router or provided by your ISP).
- Go to Wireless, Wi‑Fi, or Network settings.
- Find the field labeled SSID and confirm the name exactly (including capitalization, spaces, and underscores).
If you’re on a mesh system, the “parent node” and satellites might show the same SSID or different ones depending on configuration.
Use the correct band name (2.4 GHz vs 5 GHz vs 6 GHz)
Modern routers often maintain separate SSID settings per band. If your SSID differs between bands, you may see:
Recommended Free Tools
- 2.4 GHz SSID: longer range, slower speeds.
- 5 GHz SSID: shorter range, usually faster.
- 6 GHz SSID (Wi‑Fi 6E): available only if your router and device support it.
Choose the SSID that matches what your device is connected to right now—or what you want it to connect to.
SSIDs, Security, and Privacy Considerations
For security, an SSID does not directly determine password strength. The protection level comes from the encryption method (commonly WPA2-Personal or WPA3-Personal).
That said, the SSID can reveal personal details if you used a name like SmithFamily. If privacy matters, consider renaming it to something generic.
Quick Comparison: Where to Look on Each Device
| Device | What to look for | Typical path |
|---|---|---|
| Windows 10/11 | Connected Wi‑Fi Network name | Taskbar Wi‑Fi menu → Network & Internet settings → Status |
| macOS | Wi‑Fi connected network name | Wi‑Fi menu bar icon → or System Settings → Network → Wi‑Fi |
| iPhone/iPad (iOS/iPadOS) | Network with blue checkmark | Settings → Wi‑Fi → Wi‑Fi NETWORKS list |
| Android | Connected network name | Settings → Network & Internet (or Connections) → Wi‑Fi |
Final Thoughts
An SSID is simply the Wi‑Fi network name your devices use to connect. On most systems, you can find it quickly by checking the connected Wi‑Fi status screen or Wi‑Fi settings list.
