Because NAND can withstand only a finite amount of writing and erasing, distributing that activity helps prevent a small group of blocks from wearing out much sooner than the rest of the drive.
What is SSD wear leveling?
Wear leveling is a controller-managed process that distributes write and erase activity across the NAND flash in an SSD. Samsung describes it as spreading data writes across available cells, while Kioxia explains that a controller can track block erase counts and favor blocks with lower counts. The exact algorithms vary by drive and controller.

This matters because NAND flash has finite write/erase endurance. If use is concentrated in a small portion of the flash, those locations can wear prematurely. Spreading activity helps the drive use its flash more evenly.
How does wear leveling work?
Your computer addresses data using logical addresses; the SSD controller decides where that data is stored in physical NAND. The controller can track how often blocks have been erased and remap data so that writes are directed toward less-used blocks. Kioxia’s explanation focuses on managing erase counts and writing to blocks with lower counts. The details and thresholds are implementation-specific, so not every SSD follows an identical procedure.

- MEET THE NEXT GEN: Consider this a cheat code; Our Samsung 990 PRO Gen4 SSD helps you reach near max performance with lightning-fast speeds; Whether you’re a hardcore gamer or a tech guru, you’ll get power efficiency built for the final boss
- REACH THE NEXT LEVEL: Gen4 steps up with faster transfer speeds and high-performance bandwidth; With a more than 55% improvement in random performance compared to 980 PRO, it’s here for heavy computing and faster loading
- THE FASTEST SSD FROM THE WORLD'S FLASH MEMORY BRAND: The speed you need for any occasion; With read and write speeds up to 7450/6900 MB/s you’ll reach near max performance of PCIe 4.0 powering through for any use
- PLAY WITHOUT LIMITS: Give yourself some space with storage capacities from 1TB to 4TB; Sync all your saves and reign supreme in gaming, video editing, data analysis and more
- IT’S A POWER MOVE: Save the power for your performance; Get power efficiency all while experiencing up to 50% improved performance per watt over the 980 PRO; It makes every move more effective with less consumption
Samsung likewise describes the practical goal as distributing writes across available cells. Without that balancing, heavily used flash locations could reach their endurance limits earlier and affect the useful life of the drive.
Does wear leveling extend an SSD’s life?
It can help extend the useful life of the flash by reducing uneven wear; it does not prevent NAND from wearing out or guarantee how long a particular SSD will last. Endurance depends on the drive’s NAND, design, and workload. A rating such as TBW (terabytes written) is a product-specific endurance measure, not a promise that every drive will last the same number of years or fail exactly when that total is reached.

There is no single current program/erase-cycle figure that applies to all NAND. Historical cell-endurance examples should not be treated as specifications for present-day SSDs. For a particular drive, use its manufacturer’s endurance rating and warranty information, and consider the workload it is expected to handle.
Is wear leveling the same as TRIM?
No. They are related to flash management but do different things:

- Get NVMe solid state performance with up to 1050MB/s read and 1000MB/s write speeds in a portable, high-capacity drive(1) (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device & other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
- Up to 3-meter drop protection and IP65 water and dust resistance mean this tough drive can take a beating(3) (Previously rated for 2-meter drop protection and IP55 rating. Now qualified for the higher, stated specs.)
- Use the handy carabiner loop to secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind.
- Help keep private content private with the included password protection featuring 256‐bit AES hardware encryption.(3)
- Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C
| Feature | What it manages | How it is initiated |
|---|---|---|
| Wear leveling | Distribution of physical writes and erase activity across NAND blocks. | The SSD controller manages it. |
| TRIM | Identification of data blocks the operating system no longer needs, so the SSD can prepare them for future writes. | The operating system or host sends the indication; the SSD handles it. |
TRIM does not itself distribute wear. It tells the drive which data is no longer in use, while wear leveling balances flash use.

Wear indicators and monitoring tools report drive information; they are not the wear-leveling process itself. SanDisk notes that S.M.A.R.T. can expose information for SATA and NVMe SSDs and recommends its Dashboard for checking wear and endurance. The available indicators and their presentation depend on the SSD and its monitoring software.

For endurance terminology, Kingston defines TBW as a measure of an SSD’s endurance. Check the specific drive’s documentation for its rating rather than treating TBW as a universal lifespan prediction.
