Squadron 42 is a single-player space adventure set in the Star Citizen universe. Its published premise puts you in the United Empire of Earth (UEE) Navy, living and working with a crew during a galactic war. It is a separate campaign from Star Citizen’s persistent online universe, though the two share a setting and have planned connections. RSI says Squadron 42 is still in development and is not available to download; the publisher-listed Steam page currently shows Q2 2027 as its planned release window.
What is Squadron 42?
Squadron 42 is a story-led, single-player science-fiction game from the makers of Star Citizen. You take the role of a recruit in the UEE Navy and serve alongside a crew during a galactic war, according to the publisher-listed Steam synopsis.

The game is designed as a cinematic adventure rather than the ongoing shared-world experience of Star Citizen. RSI chairman Chris Roberts described the creative aim as letting players shape their own adventure through relationships with characters, battles, and cinematic set pieces. That is the developer’s stated ambition, not an assessment of a finished game: Roberts’s Letter from the Chairman.

The publicly described premise is military science fiction: you enlist in the UEE Navy and live and work with fellow crew members while a galactic war unfolds. The publisher names several settings that give the campaign its range:

Those details establish a campaign that moves between shipboard life and combat environments. They do not reveal a chapter-by-chapter plot, a specific ending, or a complete account of the characters and events, so claims about those particulars go beyond what the publisher has disclosed in its synopsis.
How does Squadron 42 fit into Star Citizen?
Both games belong to the same fictional universe, but they offer different ways to play. RSI’s package-split explanation describes them as distinct modules with functional connections, so players can choose the single-player campaign or the persistent universe separately.
