Squadron 42 is a planned single-player campaign set in the same universe as Star Citizen. It is not another name for Star Citizen’s persistent-universe experience. Roberts Space Industries (RSI) has described the projects as distinct but functionally connected modules, while its latest support pages say Squadron 42 remains in development and is not yet available to download or play.
The practical answer for 2026 is therefore straightforward: Squadron 42 is the authored, single-player side of the Star Citizen project, but there is no playable release to install today and the current official status pages do not provide a release date.

What is Squadron 42?
RSI’s current support language calls Squadron 42 a “single-player campaign.” That description is the clearest way to understand the product. Instead of dropping a player into a continuing online world, the campaign is intended to deliver a structured story experience played alone.

A persistent universe, by contrast, is designed as an ongoing environment in which players return, undertake activities and continue developing a character or career. Squadron 42 is also not presented as a separate science-fiction setting. RSI says it and Star Citizen are part of the same game universe. In practical terms, the campaign is a story-focused way to enter that setting, while Star Citizen is the continuing universe built around it.
How Squadron 42 relates to Star Citizen
The relationship is easiest to understand as two experiences built within one fictional universe rather than one game mode with two names. RSI’s February 9, 2016 Package Split Information announcement described Squadron 42 as the single-player campaign and Star Citizen as the persistent universe. It also said that separating the packages did not change their shared setting or their functional connection.

The table’s access details come from the 2016 package announcement. They describe RSI’s package and product plan at that time, not a guarantee that every historical purchasing or progression arrangement is still offered unchanged.

RSI’s package-split announcement made two concrete connection claims. First, it said the two titles would be accessible through the same game client. Second, it said a player’s performance in Squadron 42 would affect that player’s career in the persistent universe.

Those statements explain why the campaign has always been discussed as more than an unrelated single-player spin-off. The intended design was that actions or achievements in the authored campaign could have consequences for the player’s position or progression when entering the broader persistent setting.
However, the announcement is dated February 9, 2016. Its wording should be read as a description of the design and package plan published then. It does not establish today’s price, account-entitlement rules, client behavior or the final implementation of campaign-to-universe progression. Treating those 2016 terms as current would turn a historical explanation into an unsupported purchasing claim.
Is Squadron 42 part of Star Citizen?
Yes, in the sense RSI uses: both are set in the same game universe and have been described as functionally connected. No, if the question means that Squadron 42 is simply the name of Star Citizen’s online persistent universe. RSI has consistently used different labels for the two modules.
A useful plain-language distinction is:
- Squadron 42: the planned authored, single-player campaign.
- Star Citizen: the persistent-universe experience.
- The connection: RSI has described both as modules in one universe, with intended functional links between them.
This distinction also prevents a common misunderstanding: access to one experience should not automatically be assumed to mean that the other is currently playable, separately purchasable or technically complete.

Can you download or play Squadron 42 now?
No. The latest official status pages supplied by RSI say Squadron 42 is still in development and is not currently available.
RSI’s Knowledge Base article Get Started: Checklist, updated April 16, 2026, states: “The single-player campaign, Squadron 42 is still in development, and is not yet available.” The separate FAQ Where can I download Squadron 42?, updated February 4, 2026, says: “Squadron 42 is currently in development and is not available for download.” You can read the checklist at RSI’s Get Started: Checklist and the download answer at RSI’s Squadron 42 download FAQ.
These are publisher status statements dated in 2026. They are the most relevant evidence for someone deciding whether an installation should be possible now. They do not amount to an independent release forecast, and they do not announce a launch window.

What happens to an account that includes Squadron 42?
The February 4, 2026 FAQ says that an account with a pledge containing Squadron 42 will be able to download and play it after development has been completed, the game has been tested and it has been released. That wording describes a condition for future access; it does not say that the game can be downloaded before those conditions are met.

It also does not establish that a Squadron 42 pledge is currently available to purchase, what a current pledge costs or whether historical package terms remain unchanged. For those details, rely on the live account and store information RSI publishes rather than old package announcements.

The official status pages cited above do not state a release date. They identify the project as in development and unavailable, and the download FAQ ties access to completion, testing and release without assigning a calendar date.
That means a specific year, month or day cannot be presented as confirmed on the basis of these pages. Old announcements, development schedules or community predictions should not be treated as a current launch commitment unless RSI publishes a new, explicit date.
What the current official information does—and does not—establish
Established
- Squadron 42 is described by RSI as a single-player campaign.
- It shares the Star Citizen universe.
- RSI has described Squadron 42 and Star Citizen as distinct but functionally connected modules.
- The 2016 package announcement described common-client access and an intended effect of campaign performance on a persistent-universe career.
- As of RSI support-page updates in February and April 2026, Squadron 42 remains in development and is unavailable for download or play.
Not established by these status pages
- A confirmed release date or launch window.
- A final, detailed plot synopsis.
- Squadron 42-specific PC hardware or operating-system requirements.
- Supported flight sticks, joysticks or other required input devices.
- A boxed edition, physical manual or merchandise release.
- Current pricing or proof that a particular historical pledge package is still sold on the same terms.
Leaving those points open is more accurate than filling the gaps with assumptions. A game can have a long public development history without its final requirements, edition details or launch date being officially settled.
How to interpret Squadron 42 coverage and store claims
When you encounter a new article, video or store listing, separate three kinds of information:
- Current availability: check whether RSI’s support pages still describe the campaign as unavailable.
- Historical design: identify whether a statement comes from the February 9, 2016 package announcement. If it does, treat package prices, entitlement language and progression promises as historical context.
- Future intent: distinguish a design goal from a released feature. The 2016 connection language explains what RSI said it intended; it does not prove how the final product will work.
This approach is particularly important when a headline uses “Star Citizen” as shorthand for every part of the project. The campaign and persistent universe belong to the same setting, but they answer different player needs and have separate availability questions.
What should a prospective player do now?
If your interest is a story-led single-player game, Squadron 42 is the part of the project that matches that description. If you are looking for an immediately playable persistent online experience, that is a different product question and should not be answered by assuming the campaign is available.

Before spending money, verify the current RSI account and store terms, read the latest support-page wording and check whether the specific item you are considering explicitly includes Squadron 42. Do not rely on a 2016 package price or an old bundle description as proof of current entitlement.
For technical planning, wait for official system requirements and supported-input information. The available status material does not establish what computer configuration or accessories the finished campaign will require, so buying hardware specifically for Squadron 42 would be speculative.
Bottom line
Squadron 42 is the Star Citizen universe’s planned single-player campaign, while Star Citizen is the persistent-universe experience. RSI has described them as separate but connected modules, including a historical plan in which campaign performance could influence a player’s persistent-universe career.
