Squadron 42 is Cloud Imperium Games’ separate, single-player story campaign. Star Citizen is the studio’s live online space game. They share a broader universe and developer, but Squadron 42 is not simply a solo mode inside Star Citizen. Their access models, release states and development workstreams are different.
The short answer: two related products, not two modes of one game
Squadron 42 is designed as a story-led campaign for one player. Star Citizen is an online, continually updated game environment in which players connect to live servers through an RSI account and a qualifying game package. Thinking of Squadron 42 as “the single-player part of Star Citizen” is therefore misleading: the projects are connected, but they are sold and developed as distinct products.

That distinction matters most when you are deciding what you can play now. Roberts Space Industries (RSI) support guidance updated April 16, 2026 describes Star Citizen as operating in a live environment. The same guidance says Squadron 42 is still in development and is not yet available. A separate RSI download article updated February 4, 2026 says Squadron 42 can be downloaded only after development, testing and release are complete.
No official release date is established by those pages. A progress-tracker entry or a development update should not be converted into a launch-window claim.

What Squadron 42 is
A single-player campaign
Squadron 42 is the narrative-focused project. Its core format is a single-player story campaign rather than a shared online service. That means its primary structure is a planned campaign intended to be completed as a coherent story, instead of an open-ended online environment that receives features and content over time.
RSI’s official Squadron 42 page places the fiction in the year 2945 and frames the story around threats facing the United Empire of Earth. The year 2945 is a date in the game’s fictional setting, not a real-world release or development statistic. The available official material establishes the campaign format and setting, but it does not provide a verified launch date.
A separate offering
RSI account and package guidance refers to a standalone Squadron 42 pledge. That language is important: the campaign is treated as its own product rather than an automatic feature included with every Star Citizen package. A person researching Squadron 42 should therefore check which product a pledge covers instead of assuming that access to one title automatically grants access to the other.

What “single-player” does and does not tell you
“Single-player” describes the campaign’s intended play structure. It does not, by itself, establish details such as a final mission count, system requirements, multiplayer features, launch-day price or release date. Those details should come from a specific official announcement when they are finalized.

What Star Citizen is
An online live environment
Star Citizen is the currently accessible online project. RSI’s “Get Started: Checklist,” updated April 16, 2026, says its servers operate in a “live” environment that players can access through an RSI account with a game package. In practical terms, Star Citizen is built around connecting to a persistent service rather than installing a finished, self-contained campaign and playing it offline.
Iterative development
Star Citizen’s live model allows the studio to release functionality and content incrementally. An older “Letter from the Chairman,” written by RSI chairman Chris Roberts, contrasts this approach with Squadron 42 by saying Star Citizen “iteratively release[s] functionality and content every three months, so tangible progress can be seen and played.” That statement explains the development philosophy described at the time; it should not be treated as a guarantee of a current three-month schedule.
RSI communications from October 2026 continue to discuss Alpha updates to Star Citizen’s live servers. “Live” in this context means the service is available to play while still being developed and changed. It does not mean the project has stopped evolving or that every planned feature is complete.

Can you play Squadron 42 now?
According to RSI’s support pages, no. The “Where can I download Squadron 42?” article, updated February 4, 2026, says the game remains in development and is not available for download. It explains that qualifying accounts will be able to download it once development is finished, testing is complete and the game has been released.

The April 16, 2026 checklist makes the contrast explicit: Star Citizen can be accessed through its live environment, while “the single-player campaign, Squadron 42 is still in development, and is not yet available.” Because these are dated support statements, they describe the status on those update dates rather than promising that the status can never change. Check a newer official announcement if you are reading this after those dates.
Is Squadron 42 part of Star Citizen?
They are related projects from the same studio and are set in the same broad science-fiction universe, but Squadron 42 is not merely a Star Citizen game mode. The clearest practical differences are its single-player campaign structure, separate pledge treatment and separate release process.
RSI’s official progress tracker, updated October 6, 2026, lists Star Citizen and Squadron 42 as separate workstreams. It includes Squadron 42 chapter strike teams, which indicates that campaign chapters are being tracked independently rather than as ordinary Star Citizen live-service tasks. The tracker demonstrates parallel development; it does not establish that the campaign is close to launch.

The available RSI guidance treats Squadron 42 as a standalone pledge option, so it should not be assumed that buying Star Citizen is a prerequisite for the campaign. Conversely, buying or accessing Star Citizen does not mean the unreleased Squadron 42 campaign is automatically downloadable today.

After release, access will still be governed by the account and entitlement rules RSI publishes for qualifying owners. The February 4, 2026 download article gives the important sequence—development, testing, release, then download—but does not provide a final launch-day purchasing policy or price. Avoid relying on older package descriptions if a newer account page changes the available options.

Choose Star Citizen if you want access to an online service now
Star Citizen is the relevant choice for someone who wants to connect to the currently live environment. You need the account and game-package access described by RSI, and you should expect an evolving service rather than a finished, fixed campaign. Features, systems and content can change as the project is updated.
Choose Squadron 42 if your priority is a solo narrative
Squadron 42 is aimed at the player who wants a dedicated story campaign rather than a persistent online environment. As of the dated RSI guidance above, however, it is not playable or downloadable. A standalone pledge is a product entitlement, not proof that the campaign has already launched.
Want both? Treat the entitlements separately
If you are interested in both experiences, read the exact wording of the package or pledge you are considering. Confirm whether it covers Star Citizen, Squadron 42 or both. The projects’ shared studio and universe do not remove the need to verify the entitlement attached to an account.
Common misunderstandings to avoid
- “Squadron 42 is Star Citizen offline.” It is a separately developed, story-led campaign, not simply an offline switch for the live game.
- “A live Star Citizen server means Squadron 42 has launched.” RSI’s April 2026 guidance distinguishes the accessible live environment from the campaign that was still in development.
- “A progress-tracker milestone is a release date.” The October 2026 tracker shows ongoing workstreams, not a confirmed launch window.
- “Buying Star Citizen automatically gives campaign access.” RSI describes a standalone Squadron 42 pledge, so package entitlements must be checked individually.
- “The older three-month quote is a current promise.” Roberts’ letter describes an approach from its publication period and is not a present-day cadence guarantee.
How to verify the status without relying on rumors
- Check the latest RSI support article about Squadron 42 downloads and note its update date.
- Read the current Star Citizen getting-started guidance separately; it describes access to the live environment, not campaign availability.
- Review the official progress tracker for evidence of active work, but do not interpret task completion as a release announcement.
- Confirm the wording of any pledge or game package before purchase, especially whether it names Star Citizen, Squadron 42 or both.
- Look for an explicit official release announcement before assuming that a download is available.
