SQL Server uses it to capture memory-dump files when it encounters an exception, assertion, non-yielding scheduler, corruption-related condition, or another event that needs investigation. Administrators can also run it against a Windows process by process ID.
A copy is normally legitimate when it is inside the Shared folder of an installed SQL Server release and has a valid Microsoft digital signature. The same filename in an unrelated directory is not proof of malware, but it should be verified before you trust it or delete it. The procedures below show how to identify the file, run a controlled dump, and troubleshoot the documented errors.

What sqldumper.exe does
Microsoft includes Sqldumper.exe with SQL Server. Its job is to read the target process’s memory and write a diagnostic dump that developers, database administrators, or support engineers can analyze. SQL Server may launch it automatically after an unhandled exception, an assertion failure, a non-yielding scheduler, a corruption-related condition, or another diagnostic trigger. A dump can preserve the state of threads, modules, and selected memory at the moment of failure, which is often more useful than a short error message.

Although the name looks like a normal Windows executable, sqldumper.exe is associated with SQL Server rather than with every Windows installation. If you do not use SQL Server, the file deserves extra scrutiny. If you do use SQL Server and the file appeared immediately after a database-service fault, automatic invocation is an intended behavior, not by itself evidence of infection.
Is sqldumper.exe safe?
Check the complete path first
In Task Manager, an error dialog, or a process-monitoring record, inspect the executable’s full path instead of judging the filename alone. Microsoft documents SQL Server 2019 in a path such as:
C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL Server150SharedSQLDumper.exe
The versioned folder is significant. Microsoft’s documented mapping uses folders 90, 100, 110, 120, 130, 140, and 150 for SQL Server 2005, 2008, 2012, 2014, 2016, 2017, and 2019 respectively. The list does not establish a path for every later SQL Server release, so use the installation’s own Shared directory rather than assuming that 150 is correct on a newer build.
A path beneath Program FilesMicrosoft SQL Server<version>Shared is consistent with a normal installation. A copy under a user’s profile, a temporary folder, a browser-download directory, or an unrelated application directory is not automatically malicious, but it is outside the documented location and requires verification.

Verify the signature and metadata
- Right-click the file and select Properties.
- Review the Digital Signatures tab. Confirm that the signer is Microsoft and that Windows reports the signature as valid.
- On the Details tab, compare the product and file-version information with the SQL Server release installed on the computer.
- Use your organization’s approved security scanner on a suspicious copy. Do not rely on the filename, icon, or a familiar-looking version number alone.
A valid signature is strong evidence that the binary was published by Microsoft, but it does not tell you whether a separate, unsigned copy elsewhere on the disk is safe. Check each path independently.
Do not confuse a dump with the executable
SQL Server may create an .mdmp file after a fault. That dump can be large and may contain sensitive information from the process’s memory. Its presence does not mean that the dump itself is a program or that sqldumper.exe is still running. Preserve it if support or an administrator needs the evidence, and handle it according to your organization’s data-retention and privacy rules.

Can you delete sqldumper.exe?
Do not delete a copy merely because it appeared after a SQL Server crash. SQL Server may need the utility for the next diagnostic event, and removing it can turn a useful failure report into a missing-file error. First record the path, SQL Server edition and version, signature status, and the time of the invocation.
If the file is in an expected SQL Server Shared folder, leave it in place. If you are uninstalling SQL Server, remove the component through the normal SQL Server or Windows uninstall process rather than manually deleting individual files. If the file is outside the installation and fails signature or malware checks, quarantine it using your normal security procedure and investigate how it arrived; do not replace it with a downloaded copy from an unverified website.
Why sqldumper.exe may use CPU, disk, or memory
Dump generation temporarily pauses the target
To capture a consistent state, Sqldumper freezes the target process while it reads memory and writes the dump. During that interval, SQL Server can appear hung and clients may time out. A full dump can approach the target process’s memory footprint, so disk activity and free-space consumption can be substantial. On a clustered deployment, a long capture can exceed the cluster’s responsiveness window and cause a failover.

Those effects are expected during a dump, but they should end when the write completes. Avoid killing the utility simply because disk usage spikes; first determine whether it is making progress and whether the destination has enough space. If the server is in production, coordinate the capture with the database administrator and the person responsible for cluster failover.

Sqldumper is a reporter, not the root-cause repair. Repeated launches usually mean that SQL Server continues to hit the same exception, assertion, scheduler stall, or corruption-related condition. Check the SQL Server error log, Windows Event Viewer, the dump files, and SQLDUMPER_ERRORLOG.log together. Note the exact timestamp, process ID, database or service involved, and whether the event happens during startup, a query, backup, or another repeatable operation.
Prepare before running a manual dump
- Sign in with a Windows administrator account or use the same account that runs the SQL Server service. Microsoft documents one of those permissions as required for manual execution.
- Identify the correct target process ID in Task Manager’s Details tab. Process IDs can change after a service restart, so use a current value.
- Locate the SQL Server installation’s
Shareddirectory and run the command from that directory. - Decide where the dump should be written. The destination directory must already exist, and Microsoft cautions against using a UNC path.
- Check free space before selecting a full dump. A full capture may be close to the target process’s memory size.
- Record the incident time and preserve existing error logs before restarting SQL Server or deleting temporary files.
Run Sqldumper.exe manually
- Open Task Manager, choose Details, and note the numeric PID for the process you need to capture. For SQL Server, verify the process name and instance with your administrator before proceeding.
- Open Command Prompt as administrator. Change to the SQL Server
Sharedfolder. For a SQL Server 2019 installation, the command is:cd /d "C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL Server150Shared" - Run the recommended mini-dump form, replacing
ProcessIDwith the current numeric PID:Sqldumper.exe ProcessID 0 0 x0128 - Wait for the command to finish. The target process is frozen while the dump is written, so do not start a second capture against the same process unless an administrator has a specific reason.
- Check the chosen output directory for the dump and inspect
SQLDUMPER_ERRORLOG.logif the file is missing or the command reports an error. - Secure or transfer the dump according to your support team’s policy. Dumps can contain application data and should not be posted publicly.
The two zeroes in the documented command pattern are parameters used by Sqldumper; do not remove them when copying the pattern. If you need a custom output directory, create it first and use the output-directory form documented for your installed SQL Server build. Do not substitute a network UNC path.
Choose the appropriate dump type
The final flag controls how much memory is collected. The smallest capture that answers the diagnostic question generally minimizes downtime and disk use.

There is no universally best flag. Start with x0128 when the documented diagnostic guidance fits the incident. Use a full dump only when the investigator needs memory that a mini dump cannot provide, and plan the storage and availability impact first.

Fix common sqldumper.exe errors
OpenProcess failed 0x57 — The parameter is incorrect
This message normally means Sqldumper could not open the process using the supplied arguments. Recheck the PID in Task Manager immediately before running the command; a stale PID after a restart can point to another process or to nothing at all. Confirm that the command was typed from the correct Shared directory, that the executable name and flag are intact, and that the account has administrator rights or is the SQL Server service account. Run the command again only after those checks.
Invalid value for thread id … Parameter error
This is a command-line parameter problem. Compare every argument with the documented pattern, including both zeroes and the dump flag. Do not add punctuation, quotation marks around the numeric PID, or an unrecognized switch. If a custom destination is involved, verify it with the syntax for the installed SQL Server version and make sure the directory already exists.
No dump file appears
- Read the command-line output and
SQLDUMPER_ERRORLOG.logfor the first reported failure. - Confirm that the destination directory exists and that the account can create files there.
- Check free disk space, especially when using
x01100. - Verify that the target process is still running and that its PID did not change.
- Look for a security or monitoring product that blocked the memory-read or file-write operation.
- Use a local path rather than a UNC path and retry during an approved maintenance window.
If the utility reports success but the expected directory remains empty, search the path recorded by the command or log instead of assuming that the capture was lost. Avoid repeatedly launching full dumps until you know where each attempt is writing.
The dump takes too long or SQL Server appears frozen
A long pause is consistent with a large memory capture, slow storage, or contention from another program reading the same disk. Confirm that the process is still writing and that free space is declining as expected. For a subsequent attempt, use the smallest dump type that will answer the support question, select fast local storage with sufficient capacity, and schedule the operation when a temporary service interruption is acceptable. In a clustered system, involve the cluster administrator because an extended capture can trigger failover.
Antivirus or monitoring software interferes
Microsoft notes that security and monitoring products can detour memory-reading functions and slow or block dump creation. Do not disable protection indiscriminately. Ask the security administrator whether a narrowly scoped, approved exclusion or maintenance window is allowed for the SQL Server process and the dump destination, document the change, and remove it when the investigation ends. If policy does not permit an exclusion, provide the error log and timing details to the security and database teams so they can choose a compliant approach.
Investigate the SQL Server fault behind the dump
Once Sqldumper runs successfully, the dump is evidence rather than a repair. Correlate its timestamp with the SQL Server error log and Windows Event Viewer. Look for the exception, assertion, scheduler message, or corruption warning that caused SQL Server to request the capture. Compare multiple incidents: identical exception text and stack information suggest one recurring fault, while different triggers may indicate separate problems.
Keep the original dump and logs together with the SQL Server version, operating-system version, instance name, process ID, dump flag, destination, and the approximate duration of the capture. Those details let a Microsoft support engineer or an experienced SQL Server administrator reproduce the command and interpret the result. Do not edit a dump to reduce its size; if transfer limits matter, ask the recipient which dump form is sufficient and create a new, smaller capture instead.
Clean up after troubleshooting
After the administrator confirms that the evidence is no longer needed, remove large dump files through the organization’s retention procedure. Verify that no diagnostic collection is still running and that the SQL Server service is healthy before deleting anything. Keep the Sqldumper executable in the SQL Server installation. If the executable itself is damaged or missing, repair the SQL Server installation with its supported setup media or package rather than downloading a replacement from an unofficial source.

When to escalate
Escalate to a SQL Server administrator or Microsoft support when dumps recur, the database service repeatedly fails, corruption is suspected, a cluster fails over, or a full capture cannot complete without exhausting storage or causing unacceptable downtime. Provide the error logs, Event Viewer entries, dump flag, executable path and signature result, exact command pattern, and the time at which the target process became unresponsive. That information is more actionable than simply reporting that “sqldumper.exe crashed.”
