Spotify’s AI DJ is a personalized listening feature that plays music with spoken commentary. When Spotify introduced it on February 22, 2023, the company said OpenAI generative AI helped its music editors produce context about songs and artists; Spotify’s own personalization technology chose the music, and Sonantic technology generated the speech. The feature has since expanded beyond that launch-era format to support text and voice requests and, according to Spotify’s current U.S. support page, questions about podcasts and audiobooks.
What Spotify launched in February 2023
Spotify announced DJ on February 22, 2023, as a beta personalized stream for Premium listeners in the United States and Canada. Initially, it was rolling out in English through Spotify’s iOS and Android apps. It selected music based on a listener’s taste, inserted spoken commentary about tracks and artists, and adjusted recommendations in response to feedback. Spotify said listeners could tap the DJ control to change the experience when they wanted a different direction. Spotify’s launch announcement

That description matters: the original DJ was not presented as a free-roaming chatbot that independently chose every song and wrote every introduction. Spotify described separate roles for its personalization system, music editors, OpenAI technology, and Sonantic voice generation.

Spotify said it put OpenAI generative AI in the hands of its music editors so they could provide information about the music, artists, or genres a listener was hearing. The company’s launch announcement described the AI as a way to scale editorial context, not as the system responsible for selecting the music. Spotify attributed the song choices to its personalization technology and the generated voice to Sonantic, a voice-technology company Spotify had acquired. Spotify’s account of DJ’s launch technology

More ways to direct the listening experience
By October 15, 2025, Spotify said Premium listeners could make requests in English and Spanish, submit text requests, and use personalized prompts. Its announcement at that point described DJ as rolling out in more than 60 markets; that figure belongs to the 2025 update, not a current exact market count. Spotify’s October 2025 update

Current U.S. support describes a broader feature
Spotify’s U.S. support page describes text and voice requests, mood changes, and questions about listening history or content. It says listeners can ask DJ for music, podcasts, or audiobooks, and find it from Home, Search, or Now Playing. Spotify also says DJ is available in a limited number of languages. These are current U.S. support details, not a guarantee that every interaction or entry point is available in every market. Spotify DJ help page
Expansion reported in May 2026
In an announcement dated May 7, 2026, Spotify said DJ was expanding to more than 75 markets and adding French, German, Italian, and Brazilian Portuguese. Spotify said the feature remained in beta. The same announcement reported that 94 million Spotify Premium users had used DJ since its 2023 launch. These are figures Spotify reported at that date; the market total is not a complete country-by-country availability list. Spotify’s May 2026 expansion announcement

How to find and use Spotify DJ
- Open Spotify on a supported app. Spotify’s launch rollout used its iOS and Android apps; current regional support can differ.
- Look for DJ from Home, Search, or Now Playing. These are the entry points listed on Spotify’s current U.S. help page.
- Make a request if the option is available. Use text or voice to request a style or mood, ask for a change such as “Make it more upbeat,” or ask about supported listening content. Spotify’s examples include “Play upbeat music that matches my summer energy” and “Who are this artist’s influences?”
- Use the DJ control to shift direction. Spotify’s original launch description said listeners could tap the control when they were not enjoying the current direction.
Spotify identifies DJ as a Premium feature in its current U.S. support material. Whether it appears for a particular account depends on market and language availability, so check the Spotify app and local support information rather than assuming the original U.S.-and-Canada launch limits still apply—or that a later global market count includes your location.

DJ combines personalized music selection with spoken editorial context and, in its newer documented form, listener requests. A regular playlist or queue is built by the listener or selected from available playlists; DJ instead uses Spotify’s personalization and offers a narrated, changeable listening experience. The defining distinction is not that OpenAI chooses all the songs, but that Spotify says generative AI supports editor-created context while Spotify’s personalization technology picks music.
