SpiderDAO was presented in a December 3, 2020 interview as a proposed combination of VPN service, router hardware and decentralized governance—not simply as another VPN. SpiderDAO founder and CEO Nathan Varty described SpiderVPN as the ecosystem’s first service and SpiderConnect as a router intended to provide VPN access as well as a way to participate in governance. The interview is a historical account of the project’s plans, not evidence that every proposed feature is available today.
What is SpiderDAO?
In his December 3, 2020 interview with TechBullion, Nathan Varty described SpiderDAO as a hardware-based decentralized autonomous organization (DAO) built around internet-security tools. Its proposed ecosystem joined a VPN service, router hardware and governance functions. The idea was that a user could connect through SpiderVPN and use a SpiderConnect router, while the broader project would provide ways to take part in decisions about the network.

The interview also described a SpiderDashboard, a bandwidth marketplace and a SpiderVault. Those were presented as ecosystem features or plans, not as proof that they were operating then—or that they remain available now. A later or current support page for VPN hardware does not, by itself, establish the status of the DAO or its governance services.

SpiderVPN was described as the connection layer for the proposed ecosystem. A SpiderDAO white paper discusses WireGuard and SOCKS5 options, encryption components, distributed nodes and router protections. These are claims made in project materials, not independent verification of privacy or security effectiveness. The material available here does not establish independent security audits or comparative tests supporting broad claims about protection.

- Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
- A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
- Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
- Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
- Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.
In the interview, Varty said: “Since SpiderVPN has been running since 2017, the Router and VPN aspects of the project are at a very advanced stage of development.” That statement reflects his description of the project in 2020; it does not establish its current development or service status.
What is the SpiderConnect router, and does a VPN router cover every device?
SpiderConnect was described as a router with two intended roles: route connected devices through a VPN and provide a route into SpiderDAO participation. A historical SpiderDAO partnership post also names SpiderPro and SpiderLite variants and says the hardware used OpenWrt with custom firmware. These historical descriptions do not establish present availability or compatibility for any particular router.

In general, a router-based VPN can cover devices whose traffic passes through that router and whose configuration sends that traffic through the VPN. It does not automatically protect devices using a different network path, nor does it guarantee protection against every privacy or security risk. SpiderVPN’s router setup guide describes connecting the device to an upstream modem or router, claiming it with an account, selecting a VPN location and checking the connection in the dashboard. The guide is useful for understanding the documented setup flow, but does not independently verify hardware inventory, uptime or model compatibility.

What do current support pages establish?
SpiderVPN’s downloads page lists firmware entries for SpiderPRO, Classic/Lite and SpiderConnect. Together with the setup guide, this shows that router support materials are available on those pages. It does not establish that the named hardware is currently for sale, that every listed firmware works with every revision, or that SpiderDAO governance features are operating.

SpiderVPN’s terms page describes paid VPN and related services, billing periods, service limitations, cancellation terms, a stated 30-day guarantee for new customers subject to exclusions, and a 12-month warranty on Lite and Pro routers. These are changeable consumer terms; check the live page for current applicability before relying on them.
What was SPDR meant to do?
The interview discussed SPDR token utility, including what it called “liquidity-as-utility,” and described plans for monetizing bandwidth through an ecosystem marketplace. The project’s intended relationship between the router, token and governance was part of the broader proposal. The available current support material does not establish whether these utilities, the marketplace, SpiderDashboard or SpiderVault are active today. A 2020 description should therefore be read as a historical plan, not as a current token-use guide.

Is SpiderDAO still active?
The evidence supports a limited answer: SpiderVPN currently surfaces router setup and firmware support pages, but those pages do not settle whether SpiderDAO’s governance system and token-related features are active. The interview and an AMA figure are from 2020. In that AMA, Varty reported more than 6,000 users across 18 or more countries; that was a historical company-reported figure, not a current subscriber count.
