SoftwareUpdateNotification.exe is most strongly associated with the update software bundled with Brother printers. It is not a core Windows component, and the filename alone does not prove that a copy is safe. If a Brother printer is installed and the file’s location and digital signature match that package, a recurring .NET Framework Initialization Error usually points to a damaged or incompatible printer-software installation. If the path, signer, or related installation does not make sense, treat the file as unknown and scan it before trying to repair or disable it.
What SoftwareUpdateNotification.exe does
The available attribution comes from a Microsoft Learn Q&A response about recurring “SoftwareUpdateNotification.exe – .NET Framework Initialization Error” messages. Microsoft Independent Advisor DaveM121 wrote that “That process is known to be associated with Brother printers software updater.” The reference is useful, but it is not a universal safety certificate: current Brother packages can use different folders, filenames, and versions, and malware can reuse a familiar name.

When legitimate, the executable is part of a printer vendor’s updater or notification component. Its job is to check or announce software updates, not to provide a Windows system service. That distinction matters when deciding whether to repair the printer package, turn off notifications, or remove an unexpected program.
Is SoftwareUpdateNotification.exe safe?
There is no safe-or-malicious verdict based on the name alone. Check three pieces of local evidence: the complete path, the digital signature, and the parent installation.
#1 Best Overall
1. Record the complete file path
- When the pop-up is visible, open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc. If the process is listed, right-click it and choose Open file location. In an error dialog, use any option that opens the file location, or locate the executable through Task Manager.
- Copy the full folder path and filename. A location inside a Brother printer-software folder is consistent with the known attribution; a random folder under a user profile, temporary directory, or an unrelated application needs additional scrutiny.
2. Check the publisher signature
- Right-click the file, select Properties, and open Digital Signatures.
- Inspect the signer and use Details to confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid. The signer should make sense for the printer package that installed the file. An absent, invalid, or unrelated signature is a warning, not proof by itself.
3. Match it to installed software
Open Settings > Apps > Apps & features (the wording can differ slightly by Windows edition) and look for Brother printer software installed at about the time the executable appeared. If no Brother package is present, or the file predates and outlives an unrelated installation, do not assume it is legitimate.
What Microsoft’s warning criteria mean
Microsoft describes unknown-software warnings as an early warning rather than proof of malware: uncommon programs are not necessarily malicious, but the risk is higher for a typical user. Microsoft’s warning criteria include software that hides its purpose, installs other software without clear consent, bypasses consent dialogs, or falsely claims to be Microsoft software. Those behaviors make scanning and removal more urgent.
Why the .NET Framework Initialization Error appears
- Damaged Brother installation: an update component or one of its supporting files may be missing or corrupted.
- Version mismatch: the updater can fail while starting if its installed components no longer match the rest of the printer package.
- Unwanted notification: the updater may launch at sign-in even when you only want to stop update pop-ups.
- Unknown or unwanted copy: a file with the same name may have been installed by another program or placed in an unexpected folder.
The evidence does not establish a single universal executable path, infection rate, or repair-success percentage. Printer model, Windows edition, and Brother software version can change the details, so use the local path and signature as the deciding evidence.

Step 1: Decide whether you are repairing or only silencing it
If a Brother printer is installed and the path and signer match it, repair the parent package first. If the installation is valid but the only problem is repeated notifications, use the Brother application’s own automatic-update setting. If the file is unexplained or suspicious, skip directly to the uninstall and scan steps below.
Step 2: Reinstall the Brother driver and associated software
- Disconnect or power off the affected printer if the Brother installer requests it.
- Use Brother’s official support site for your exact printer model and Windows edition. Download the current driver and associated software package; do not use a third-party download mirror.
- Run the installer and choose its repair, update, or reinstall option when offered. Follow the on-screen instructions for connection type and restart Windows if requested.
- After the restart, check whether the error returns. Reopen the executable’s Properties and verify that the new file belongs to the expected Brother package.
Reinstalling the driver and associated software is the first evidence-backed repair recommended for this recurring error when a Brother printer is involved.
Step 3: Turn off automatic-update notifications in Brother software
- Open the Brother printer utility from the Start menu.
- Look for an update, maintenance, preferences, or notification section.
- Turn off the application’s automatic-update or update-notification option, then save the change.
- Restart Windows and confirm that the pop-up no longer appears.
Labels vary by printer model and package version. Prefer the application’s own setting because it disables the notification without deleting the printer software.

Step 4: Disable the startup entry with Autoruns only when necessary
Microsoft Q&A also points to Microsoft Sysinternals Autoruns as an advanced option. Use it only after confirming the publisher and path; disabling the wrong entry can stop legitimate software from starting.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Download Autoruns from Microsoft Sysinternals and run it as administrator.
- Use the search box to find
SoftwareUpdateNotification. - Inspect the matching entry’s publisher and image path. Disable the entry only if those details match the Brother updater you intend to silence.
- Restart Windows and test the printer. If printing or other Brother functions stop working, reopen Autoruns and re-enable the entry.
Step 5: Remove an unknown or unwanted installation
- Open Settings > Apps > Apps & features.
- Sort by installation date and identify recently added software associated with the first appearance of the error.
- Select software you do not need, choose Uninstall, and complete its official uninstaller.
- Restart Windows, then check whether the executable and its startup entry are gone.
Do not delete a signed Brother installation manually before uninstalling it; doing so can leave printer drivers and startup references behind.
Step 6: Scan the actual file and the whole system
- Open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Protection updates and select Check for updates to update Microsoft Defender security intelligence.
- Return to Virus & threat protection, choose Scan options, select Full scan, and start the scan.
- If the file remains suspicious or the problem continues, choose Microsoft Defender Offline scan. Save work first; Windows will restart and scan before the normal desktop loads.
- For a suspicious binary that Defender flags, follow Microsoft’s submission process from Windows Security or the Microsoft security portal so the file can be analyzed.
A scan result should guide the next action. Do not assume that a clean result proves every copy with this filename is legitimate, and do not assume that an alert identifies the Brother package as malicious without checking its path and signature.
Choose the remedy that matches your evidence
| What you find | Best first action | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Brother software is installed; path and signature match | Reinstall the current Brother driver and associated software | Repairs the likely parent package that launches the updater |
| Brother installation is valid; you only want pop-ups to stop | Disable automatic updates in the Brother application | Stops notifications without removing printer functions |
| Matching startup entry remains and the application setting is unavailable | Use Autoruns after verifying publisher and path | Disables the specific startup launch, with a reversible setting |
| No matching Brother installation, unexpected path, or invalid signature | Uninstall unknown software and run Defender scans | Addresses an unexplained executable instead of trusting its filename |
| Defender reports suspicious behavior | Complete Full and, if needed, Offline scans; submit the file for analysis | Checks the binary outside the normal Windows session |
What not to do
- Do not download a replacement
.dllor “DLL fixer” from an unrelated website. Microsoft recommends trusted official sources or the Microsoft Store and warns that third-party downloads can bundle unwanted software. - Do not whitelist the file solely because it is named SoftwareUpdateNotification.exe.
- Do not disable random startup entries until their publisher and path are verified.
- Do not remove a Brother driver by deleting its executable alone; use the printer package’s uninstaller or Windows Apps settings.
Quick troubleshooting branches
The pop-up returns after reinstalling Brother software
Recheck the executable’s path and signature, then open the Brother utility and disable its automatic-update notification. If the setting is unavailable, inspect the matching Autoruns entry. A repeated failure after those steps is a reason to run Defender’s Full scan and then Offline scan rather than repeatedly downloading installers.
The file has no Brother connection
Do not repair it as if it were a printer component. Uninstall recently added software through Windows Settings, run updated Defender scans, and investigate any other startup or network behavior reported by Windows Security.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDisabling the entry breaks printer features
Re-enable the entry in Autoruns, restart Windows, and use the Brother application’s notification setting instead. The updater and the printer’s core driver may share supporting components.
Best Value
You cannot open the file location
Record the process name and any publisher shown in Task Manager, then run Defender scans. A missing location can mean the process has already exited, been quarantined, or is being launched by a stale startup reference; do not recreate the file from a download site.
When to seek additional help
Get specialist assistance if Defender repeatedly detects the file, the executable regenerates after removal, several unrelated startup entries appear, or Windows shows other unexplained security warnings. Preserve the full path, signer details, detection name, and the date the symptoms began. Those details are more useful than the filename alone.
