SoftBank’s FREE Wi-Fi PASSPORT is a free Wi-Fi hotspot service for eligible visitors to Japan and certain domestic mobile users. It works only at participating SoftBank Wi-Fi spots—not as a worldwide pass or a mobile-data connection that follows you around Japan.
What FREE Wi-Fi PASSPORT includes
SoftBank describes the service as access to selected SoftBank Wi-Fi spots for visitors using overseas mobile operators and certain users of domestic carriers. Its FAQ says visitor credentials are valid for 14 days; domestic-carrier users have a separate 90-day term. At eligible access points, the service is free, has no time limit, and allows up to five devices per day. A Wi-Fi-capable device and suitable browser are required. SoftBank’s service FAQ sets out these terms.

Where it works—and where it does not
FREE Wi-Fi PASSPORT is not available at every SoftBank Wi-Fi spot. SoftBank says only some locations participate and cautions that even a location displaying a service sticker may not be usable. Check for the network and access instructions at the location rather than assuming coverage based on a sign or on SoftBank’s broader hotspot footprint. SoftBank’s business service page describes this coverage limitation.

How visitors register and connect
SoftBank’s English guide, dated December 11, 2023, describes phone-based registration. The network names shown in the instructions are .FREE_Wi-Fi_PASSPORT and .FREE_Wi-Fi_PASSPORT_J. The guide is useful for understanding the process, but the sign-in screen and available registration methods may change; follow the current on-screen instructions if they differ.

- Call the displayed number to receive a password. The call requires roaming and may be charged by your mobile carrier; SoftBank also notes that some carriers may not support this method.

These steps follow SoftBank’s English user guide. If you cannot place the call, check the current sign-in page for another registration option or ask your carrier whether roaming calls are supported and what they cost.
When a different connection may suit you better
Because this service works only at participating hotspots, it may not meet the needs of someone who needs internet access while moving between locations or away from those hotspots. SoftBank separately lists a Prepaid SIM for Travel for visitors, but the cited service information does not establish its current price, data allowance, or coverage, so a direct value comparison is not possible. SoftBank’s visitor prepaid SIM page provides information about that separate option.
