It is not a Windows system component. A copy is trustworthy only when it came from Snyk’s official download channel, an official package-manager route or a managed company deployment, and its location and version are expected. The reliable Windows repair is to obtain a fresh snyk-win.exe, rename it to snyk.exe, place it in a permanent folder, add that folder to Path, open a new terminal, verify it with where snyk and snyk --version, then authenticate with snyk auth.
What snyk.exe does
Snyk CLI is a cloud-native, developer-focused security scanner. Depending on the command and project type, it can inspect open-source dependencies, application source code, container images and infrastructure-as-code configuration. The Windows standalone download is named snyk-win.exe; Snyk’s installation procedure tells Windows users to rename that file to snyk.exe before putting it on the command search path.

Because it is a developer tool, snyk.exe usually appears on a workstation used to build or maintain software. It may be called by a developer in PowerShell or Command Prompt, by an editor or build script, by a package-manager installation, or by a continuous-integration job. It is not required for Windows itself, and removing it does not repair a Windows component. If you do not develop software and did not install it knowingly, investigate its provenance rather than assuming the filename is genuine.
Is snyk.exe safe?
Check provenance, path and version
The name alone proves nothing. Treat a copy as legitimate when all of these checks make sense:

- The file is in the directory your team or installation method uses, rather than an unrelated temporary or user-download folder.
- The version reported by the executable is the version your project or organization expects.
where snykresolves to the same copy you intended to run.
A company may deliberately place the executable in a managed tools directory, while a personal installation may use a folder such as C:toolssnyk. The location is evidence to examine, not an authenticity guarantee. If a copy is in an unexpected directory, has a stale version, or appeared without a plausible installation event, do not run it merely because its name is correct. Quarantine that copy and obtain a fresh binary from Snyk’s official channel.
A legitimate scan can still execute project code
Snyk warns that the CLI may automatically execute package-manager code while examining a project. Its guidance is explicit: “Always make sure you understand and trust the code in the directory you intend to scan with Snyk CLI. When in doubt, do not proceed with a scan.” This is a warning about the repository being scanned, not proof that the Snyk binary is malicious. Do not point a scan at an untrusted archive, a cloned repository you have not reviewed, or a directory supplied by an unknown person. Use an isolated environment and your organization’s review process when the source is not trusted.
What to do when behavior looks suspicious
- Stop invoking the questionable copy and note the complete path shown by
where snyk. - Disconnect the project or script that launched it from automated jobs until you understand the source.
- Quarantine the unexpected executable using your normal endpoint-security procedure; do not delete evidence if your organization needs to investigate it.
- Install a new copy from Snyk’s official release channel, then compare its path and reported version with your team’s expected configuration.
- Review scripts, scheduled jobs and CI definitions for references to the old path before allowing scans to run again.
Why is snyk.exe running on my PC?
The usual explanation is an intentional scan. A developer may have run snyk test, a build script may have invoked Snyk, or a monitoring workflow may have started snyk monitor. Container and infrastructure checks can call the same executable through snyk container or snyk iac; source analysis uses snyk code. A scheduled task or CI agent can also start it without a visible console window.
To identify the trigger, first run where snyk in a new terminal and record every returned path. Then search your repository’s build files, package scripts, task definitions and CI configuration for the command that matches the observed activity. Check Windows Task Scheduler and your development environment’s task list for jobs that launch the path. If the executable is not expected, pause the job and follow the provenance checks above rather than allowing repeated scans.

Install or repair the official Windows binary
These steps are the documented standalone-binary repair path. They work whether the old copy is missing, damaged, on the wrong path or replaced by a stale version.
- Obtain a fresh Windows binary. Download
snyk-win.exefrom Snyk’s documented release channel. Do not reuse a file whose origin you cannot establish. - Rename the file. In File Explorer, select
snyk-win.exe, choose Rename, and change the name tosnyk.exe. Confirm that Windows is not hiding a second extension; the final name must not becomesnyk.exe.exe. - Choose a permanent directory. Create a stable tools folder such as
C:toolssnykand movesnyk.exeinto it. A permanent location prevents a temporary-download cleanup from breaking your command. - Add the directory to Path. Open Windows Settings and search for “environment variables,” select “Edit the system environment variables,” click “Environment Variables,” select the appropriate user or system
Pathentry, choose Edit, then New, and enterC:toolssnyk. Save every dialog. Use a user-level entry when that is sufficient for your account; a system-level entry changes availability for other users and may require administrator approval. - Open a new terminal. Close existing PowerShell and Command Prompt windows and start a new one. Terminals retain the environment they inherited when they opened, so an old window will not necessarily see the changed
Path. - Find the resolved executable. Run
where snyk. If more than one path appears, Windows can select a stale or unintended copy depending on path order. Keep the intended installation first or remove obsolete entries. - Verify the version. Run
snyk --version. A version response confirms that Windows can launch the file; compare that version with your organization’s required release. - Authenticate. Run
snyk authand complete the browser-based sign-in flow. Snyk also documents token-based authentication for CLI use when an automated or headless environment cannot use the browser flow.
If snyk --version works but a scan fails, the installation and the scan are separate problems. Continue with the repository and authentication checks below instead of repeatedly replacing the executable.
Fix “snyk is not recognized as an internal or external command”
The file is missing or still has the wrong name
Open the installation folder in File Explorer and confirm that the file is exactly snyk.exe. If the downloaded file remains snyk-win.exe, rename it. If Explorer hides extensions, enable “File name extensions” in the View menu before checking. A missing file requires a fresh download; changing Path cannot create an executable.
The directory is not on Path
In the same terminal, run the executable with its full path, for example C:toolssnyksnyk.exe --version. If that succeeds, the binary is usable and the remaining fault is command resolution. Add the containing directory, not the executable filename, to the user or system Path entry, save the change, open a new terminal and run where snyk.

The terminal has stale environment data
A terminal opened before the environment-variable edit keeps its previous Path. Close all PowerShell and Command Prompt windows, start a new one, and test again. If an integrated terminal in an editor still fails, restart the editor so it creates a new process environment.
Another copy is taking precedence
where snyk can list multiple installations. An older copy may run first and produce a different version or error. Remove obsolete copies you no longer need, or move the intended directory ahead of them in Path. Run snyk --version again and record the path and version together for future troubleshooting.
Fix a wrong or stale version
Multiple installation methods can leave more than one executable on a machine. Start with where snyk, inspect each returned path, and identify which installation owns each file. Replace the intended copy with the current binary from the official channel, or update it through the package manager that owns it. Do not overwrite a company-managed installation without checking its deployment policy. After cleanup, open a new terminal and verify both the selected path and snyk --version.

Fix authentication failures
A working binary does not automatically have an authenticated Snyk account. Run snyk auth and finish the browser flow, then retry the command. For CI or another headless environment, use the token-based authentication method documented for Snyk CLI and store the token in the platform’s protected secret mechanism rather than committing it to a repository or placing it in a shared script. If authentication succeeds interactively but fails in automation, compare the account, token scope and environment variables used by the automated job.

Fix scans that fail inside a repository
Check prerequisites and package-manager behavior
A scan can fail even when snyk.exe is installed correctly. Confirm that the repository’s required package manager and build prerequisites are installed and available to the same account that runs Snyk. Check the project’s dependency and lock files for errors before blaming the CLI. Because the CLI may invoke package-manager code, scan only repositories you understand and trust.
Use the command that matches the material

Snyk’s command reference also covers software bills of materials, configuration, policy and ignore operations. Use the command’s help output and your team’s policy to select the appropriate check; changing commands will not repair a missing executable.
Choose an installation method
Snyk documents several supported approaches: a standalone binary, package managers such as npm or Scoop, Docker, and CI/CD integrations. The practical differences below help you select one without mixing copies accidentally.

Use one deliberate owner for a given workstation command. Installing a package-manager copy while leaving an older standalone binary earlier on Path is a common reason for apparently impossible version changes.
Windows locations that help diagnose stale state
Snyk documents %LOCALAPPDATA%snyk as a Windows cache location and %USERPROFILE%.configconfigstore as a configuration location. These directories can explain why an account retains old state after the executable is replaced. Inspect them only after closing active Snyk processes and following your organization’s retention policy. Do not delete configuration or cached data blindly: doing so can remove settings or authentication state you still need. If state appears corrupt, preserve a copy, sign out or re-authenticate as appropriate, and then retry with the freshly verified executable.
When to remove and reinstall
- Reinstall: the file is missing, cannot be launched, has an unexplained provenance, or is not the version your workflow requires.
- Repair Path only: the full-path command works but
snykdoes not; the binary is fine and the environment variable is the problem. - Fix authentication:
snyk --versionworks but commands report that you are not signed in. - Fix the repository: installation and authentication work, but dependency, build or package-manager processing fails.
Keeping these cases separate prevents repeated downloads from masking a project configuration error or an unsafe repository.

snyk.exe is normally Snyk CLI for Windows, not malware by definition and not a Windows system file. Verify where it came from, where Windows finds it and which version it reports. For a broken or missing installation, download snyk-win.exe from Snyk’s official channel, rename it to snyk.exe, place it in a permanent folder, add that folder to Path, open a new terminal, run where snyk and snyk --version, then authenticate with snyk auth. Scan only repositories whose code and package-manager behavior you trust.
