smartphone.exe is not a unique, trustworthy Windows component. The same name has been used by unrelated software, including the BopSmiley spyware documented by F-Secure and a game called RiskyPhone documented by TechRadar. Its filename alone cannot tell you whether a copy is safe.
Check the complete path, parent application, download source and digital signature before deciding what to do. The safest sequence is to identify the file, remove an unknown parent program, update Microsoft Defender, run a Full scan and use Microsoft Defender Offline if the behavior continues.

What smartphone.exe can be
Windows does not assign one standard meaning to this filename. Different developers have used similar spellings, and malware can also copy familiar-looking names. Treat smartphone.exe as an identifier that needs investigation, not as proof of a Microsoft component.

BopSmiley on Windows PocketPC and Windows Smartphone
F-Secure describes DeviceProgram FilesSmartphoneSmartphone.exe as part of BopSmiley, a spying application for devices running Windows PocketPC or Windows Smartphone. Its documented behavior includes recording voice calls and SMS messages and sending details to a third-party server. That historical sample is not evidence that every modern Windows file with the same name is BopSmiley, but a matching path or unexpected phone-related software deserves immediate scrutiny.

RiskyPhone game
TechRadar separately documents a game named RiskyPhone whose extracted executable is called SmartPhone.exe. A game installed intentionally from a trusted source is a completely different case from the BopSmiley sample. Capitalization, the parent program and where the file came from help distinguish them.
Why the filename is insufficient
Legitimate applications can use generic names, while unwanted programs can use names that sound legitimate. A file in an expected installation directory with a valid publisher signature and a parent application you recognize is a different risk from an unsigned copy launched from a temporary or download folder. Microsoft’s current approach is to judge unknown executables by source, reputation and signature rather than by the spelling alone.

Is smartphone.exe safe?
There is no universal yes-or-no answer. Use the evidence below to classify the exact copy on your PC.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →| Evidence | Lower-risk indication | Higher-risk indication |

| Parent application | You intentionally installed and still use the parent program. | You do not recognize the parent program, or no parent is shown. |
| File location | A normal folder belonging to the known application. | A temporary folder, user-download folder, startup location or unrelated directory. |
| Digital signature | A valid signature from the expected publisher. | Unsigned, invalidly signed or signed by an unexpected publisher. |
| Source | Installed from the software maker or Microsoft Store. | Arrived through a pop-up, unsolicited call, remote-support session or an untrusted download. |
| Security status | Defender is updated and reports no detection. | Defender detects it, quarantines it or the process repeatedly returns. |
A valid signature supports publisher identity and file integrity; it does not guarantee that you want the program or that the publisher’s software is harmless. Conversely, an absent signature is a warning sign, not automatic proof of malware. Consider all the evidence together.

How to inspect smartphone.exe without running it
- Locate the active copy. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager. On the Processes or Details tab, find the process, right-click it and choose Open file location. Record the complete path and the application that launched it. If it is not running, search recent startup entries or the shortcut that produces the message rather than opening a copy manually.
- Read the file properties. Right-click the file, choose Properties and inspect the Digital Signatures tab. Select a signature and choose Details to see whether Windows reports that it is valid and which publisher signed it. An unexpected publisher, a failed validation or no signature increases the risk.
- Identify the parent program. Check the folder name, nearby files and any entry in Settings > Apps > Installed apps. Ask whether you deliberately installed that application and whether its name matches the publisher shown in the signature. Do not infer ownership from the filename.
- Consider how it arrived. A file downloaded as part of a known installer is evaluated differently from one delivered by a browser warning, an unsolicited telephone caller or a remote-support operator. Microsoft says its error and warning messages never include phone numbers; a pop-up asking you to call is a scam signal.
- Do not execute or “repair” a suspicious copy. Do not double-click it to test it, add it to an antivirus exclusion list, or obtain a replacement from a random DLL-fix or registry-cleaner site. Uploading a sensitive executable to an unknown analysis service can also expose personal or proprietary data.
- Use the publisher’s installer only when the parent is known. If the application is legitimate but the file is damaged, reinstall from the original vendor or Microsoft Store. If you cannot identify or trust the parent application, remove that application instead of replacing the executable.
How to remove smartphone.exe from startup
A startup message does not necessarily mean the file is still present. Windows may be trying to launch a deleted file, a security product may have quarantined it, or an incomplete uninstall may have left an invalid reference.
- Open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc and select Startup apps. Look for
smartphone.exeor the parent application. Right-click a clearly unwanted entry and choose Disable. Disabling prevents launch while you investigate; it does not delete the file. - Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps. Sort by install date if the timing is useful, select the unknown parent application and choose Uninstall. Follow the vendor’s uninstaller and restart Windows.
- If the entry is not listed, press Win+R, enter
shell:startupand inspect the current user’s Startup folder for a shortcut pointing to the missing path. Remove only a shortcut you have identified as unwanted. You can inspect the all-users folder withshell:common startupif the launch affects every account. - Check the shortcut’s Properties before deleting it. The Target field reveals the exact path and any arguments, which can identify the parent application. Do not remove a shortcut merely because its name contains “smartphone.”
- Restart and confirm that the message or process is gone. If it returns, record the new path and review Defender’s Protection history; a recurring launch may indicate another startup mechanism or an unwanted program that was not removed.
How to fix “smartphone.exe not found” and other startup errors
| Symptom | Likely explanation | Manual response |
|---|---|---|
| “smartphone.exe was not found” immediately after sign-in | A deleted application left a startup shortcut or entry. | Identify the path in the error, disable the matching Startup app and uninstall the parent. Remove the orphaned shortcut after verifying its target. |
| The error began after an antivirus detection | Defender or another security product quarantined the executable while a shortcut remains. | Review Protection history. Do not restore the file unless you can verify the parent application and source; remove the parent or reinstall it from its official source. |
| A known program reports a missing file | The installation is incomplete or the file is corrupted. | Use the program’s own repair option or reinstall from its original vendor or Microsoft Store. Avoid downloading a standalone replacement executable. |
| A window keeps appearing with a phone number | Likely technical-support fraud, not a genuine Windows alert. | Do not call. Close the session, disconnect remote access, uninstall requested remote tools and scan the PC. |
| The process returns after removal | Another component, scheduled launch or startup entry is recreating it. | Update Defender, run a Full scan, then Microsoft Defender Offline if it persists. Recheck startup entries after restarting. |
The filename cannot distinguish these causes. The exact path and parent application must be established before you choose repair, uninstall or malware cleanup.

Run Microsoft Defender safely
Update security intelligence
Connect to the internet you normally trust and open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection. Under Virus & threat protection updates, choose Check for updates. Current security intelligence improves the chance of recognizing unwanted software.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsRun a Full scan
In Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Scan options, select Full scan and start it. A Full scan checks the system rather than only the most common locations, so it can take substantially longer than a Quick scan. Let it finish, then review the result and Protection history. Follow Defender’s quarantine or removal action for a confirmed detection.
Best Value
Escalate to Microsoft Defender Offline
If the process or suspicious behavior continues after a Full scan, choose Microsoft Defender Offline scan under the same Scan options page. Save your work first: Windows restarts and scans before the normal desktop loads, which can prevent persistent software from hiding while Windows is running. After the restart, review Protection history and startup entries again.
What to do after a scam pop-up or remote-support session
If someone instructed you to download or run smartphone.exe, or a pop-up supplied a telephone number, treat the event as a security incident rather than an ordinary missing-file error.
- End the call or remote-support session and disconnect the remote-control application they asked you to install.
- Uninstall that remote-control tool from Settings > Apps > Installed apps. Remove any unknown program installed during the session.
- Update Windows and Microsoft Defender, then run a Full scan. Use Defender Offline if detections or unexplained launches continue.
- From a separate device if you suspect the PC was controlled, change important account passwords, enable multifactor authentication where available and watch bank, email and social-account activity for unexpected changes.
- Keep screenshots, filenames and timestamps if you need to report the incident to your organization, bank or local authorities.
Should you delete smartphone.exe?
Do not delete the file solely because its name looks suspicious. Manual deletion can leave the parent application broken, remove evidence useful for investigation or fail to stop a second component that launches it.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →| Situation | Best next action |
|---|---|
| Known application, expected folder and valid publisher signature | Keep it. If the application is malfunctioning, repair or reinstall it from the original source. |
| Unknown application but no active security detection | Uninstall the unknown parent, disable its startup entry and run a Defender Full scan. |
| Defender detects the file or it returns after removal | Allow quarantine or removal, then run Microsoft Defender Offline and review startup entries after reboot. |
| File in a temporary, download or unrelated folder with no recognizable parent | Do not open it. Preserve the path for reference, remove the associated unwanted software and scan the system. |
Quarantine is preferable to experimenting with a suspicious executable. If you need help from an administrator or security professional, provide the exact path, publisher information, detection name and parent application rather than sending the file to an untrusted website.
A practical decision checklist
- Have you recorded the complete path from Task Manager?
- Do you recognize the parent application and remember installing it?
- Does the file have a valid signature from the expected publisher?
- Did it come from an official installer rather than a pop-up, unsolicited call or remote session?
- Have you updated Defender and completed a Full scan?
- If the launch continues, have you run Microsoft Defender Offline?
- After cleanup, have you restarted and checked Startup apps and Protection history?
If any answer points to an unknown source, avoid running or whitelisting the file. Remove the parent application when possible and let Defender’s quarantine and Offline scan handle a suspected unwanted program.
Quick Recap
As an optional shortcut after the manual checks, Outbyte PC Repair can address more than 100 common Windows issues, review settings that affect CPU, RAM and disk load, clean temporary and cache files, provide privacy and vulnerability checks, and include real-time boost, file-shredder and app-crash-log features. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7, offers a free trial by category of at least two days and then requires a subscription. It complements antivirus software rather than replacing it, and results vary because no tool repairs every crash.
