sitool.exe is not a standard Windows component that you can trust by filename alone. Public file databases describe several unrelated-looking variants, including files labelled Host – SystemInfo or Terminal System Info. They are often found below a user profile such as %AppData%Roamingsysinfotool, and documented samples may have no digital signature or dependable publisher information.
That does not prove that every copy is malware. A file installed with a known application can be corrupt or incompatible, while an unexpected copy can be part of a persistence mechanism. Check the complete path, publisher, signature, hash, parent installer and startup behaviour before you allow, delete or replace it. The steps below show how to do that safely and how to handle each outcome.

What sitool.exe may be
Windows does not have one canonical, built-in sitool.exe. The name has been used by more than one program, so the filename itself is not an identity or a safety certificate.

File-analysis references describe a non-system executable that can display Host – SystemInfo errors. FreeFixer documented a sample described as Terminal System Info, normally located at C:Users%USERNAME%AppDataRoamingsysinfotool. That sample reported product/file version 2.0.216.266, no digital signature and SHA-256 hash cce2f8d592e19e42de3a1ba7a49b616df34956c1bed7a0eb4f035046c39c7173. The hash identifies that particular sample only; it must not be treated as a universal hash for every file named sitool.exe.

Other reported associations
Another file database lists variants in user-profile directories and says some are associated with Antares Auto-Tune Evo VST RTAS. That association is sample-specific and is not proof that an arbitrary copy belongs to that product. Conflicting descriptions are precisely why the path and publisher matter more than the name.
Why an AppData copy deserves attention
Programs can legitimately store per-user components in AppData, but an executable that appears there without a clear installation history is harder to audit than one installed under a known vendor directory in Program Files. An unexpected random-looking folder, an unsigned file, a publisher shown as unknown or a task that launches the file at logon are warning signs. They are indicators for investigation, not proof of infection.
| Check | More consistent with a known installation | More suspicious, but not conclusive by itself |
|---|---|---|
| Path | A vendor’s documented installation directory or a location created by an installer you recognize | An unexpected per-user path such as %AppData%Roamingsysinfotool or a random folder |
| Publisher and signature | A valid signature from the application publisher that Windows can verify | No signature, an unknown publisher or a signature that fails validation |
| Hash reputation | The hash matches a current, reputable source for the installed version | Security services flag the hash or there is no trustworthy record |
| Parent installer | You can identify the application and installed it from its official publisher | You do not remember installing it, or it arrived with an untrusted download |
| Persistence | No unexplained startup entry or scheduled task | A task or startup entry launches the file from an unexpected user directory |
| Current security scan | Updated security software reports no detection, with other checks agreeing | An updated scan detects or quarantines the file |
Is sitool.exe safe?
There is no universal yes-or-no answer. Historical malware research by HarfangLab described “Sitool” as the first stage of a TaskLoader infection chain. Its analysis covered an obfuscated .NET binary and execution through a scheduled task. A separate malware-removal log recorded a task launching C:UserspiotrAppDataRoaming\sysinfotool\sitool.exe. Those reports show a real abuse pattern, but they do not establish that every file with this name is malicious or that an old detection label still applies to your file.

Treat an unexpected copy as suspicious until you establish its origin. Do not open it to see what it does. A legitimate file can crash, be blocked by Windows or lose its supporting files; malware can produce the same visible error messages. Verification and an updated scan are safer than guessing from the filename.
What Windows security features do and do not tell you
Windows Code Integrity is designed to ensure that kernel-mode code is properly signed. Core isolation and Memory integrity make it harder for malicious low-level code to run. These protections are useful signals when Windows reports that code was blocked, but they do not certify an ordinary user-mode executable such as sitool.exe. A valid signature is evidence about who signed a file, not a guarantee that the file is desirable or that it is safe to execute in every context.
Verify your exact copy before deleting or repairing it
Perform these checks from an administrator account if necessary. Record the results before changing anything; the path and hash are especially useful if you need help later.

- Find the complete path. If the process is running, press
Ctrl+Shift+Escto open Task Manager, select the Details tab, right-clicksitool.exeand choose Open file location. If it is not running, search File Explorer for the filename and note every copy, including drive letter and folder. Do not rely on a shortcut’s displayed name. - Inspect file properties. Right-click the executable, choose Properties and review General, Details and Digital Signatures. Record the product name, company, file version, creation date and signer. On the signature tab choose Details and confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid. An unsigned file or missing publisher warrants extra scrutiny, although some legitimate older software is also unsigned.
- Calculate a SHA-256 hash without launching the file. In PowerShell, run
Get-FileHash -Algorithm SHA256 -LiteralPath 'C:fullpathsitool.exe'. Copy the resulting hash exactly. Compare it with a current, reputable malware-analysis or antivirus service. Do not assume the documented FreeFixer hash applies to your copy, even if the filename and folder look identical. - Scan with updated security software. Update Microsoft Defender or another reputable anti-malware product, then run a full scan. You can right-click the file in File Explorer and choose Scan with Microsoft Defender for an immediate check, but a full-system scan is important when persistence is possible. Quarantine a detection rather than launching it or downloading a replacement from an unknown site.
- Check scheduled tasks. Press
Win+R, entertaskschd.mscand inspect Task Scheduler Library and its subfolders. Select suspicious tasks and review the Actions tab. Look for an action whose program or argument points tositool.exe, especially under a user profile or a newly created random folder. Record the task name, author, trigger and action before disabling it. Scheduled-task execution was documented in the HarfangLab analysis, so this check is important even if the process is not currently running. - Review startup locations. In Task Manager, open Startup apps and disable an entry that clearly points to the suspicious path, but record its name first. Also inspect the per-user and all-user startup folders by entering
shell:startupandshell:common startupin File Explorer. For registry persistence, inspect theRunandRunOncekeys underHKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionandHKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersion. Do not delete unrelated values; export a key before changing it. - Identify the parent application. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps and search for the product that may have installed the file. Check its install date and publisher. If you cannot connect the executable to software you recognize, treat that uncertainty as a reason to investigate, not as permission to run it.
- Check whether Windows blocked it. Review Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Protection history and, when relevant, Windows Security > Device security > Core isolation. A block, quarantine event or Memory integrity message can explain why the program will not start, but it does not establish that the file is legitimate. Preserve the detection name and path before clearing the history.
What the common sitool.exe errors mean
Public file references list several messages:
- sitool.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close.
- Terminal System Info has stopped working.
- Access violation at address FFFFFFFF in module sitool.exe.
- sitool.exe is not a valid Win32 application.
- The instruction at 0xXXXXXXXX referenced memory at 0xXXXXXXXX.
These messages identify a failure, not its cause. Corruption, an incompatible version, missing dependencies, a blocked executable, damaged memory or malware can all lead to similar text. Use the path, signature, hash, parent application and security results to choose the remedy instead of applying a generic DLL download or repeatedly starting the process.

Fix sitool.exe when it belongs to a known application
Repair the parent application first
If you can identify a legitimate application that installed the file, close that application and save your work. Go to Settings > Apps > Installed apps, select the application, open the three-dot menu and choose Advanced options when available. Use Repair first; it normally preserves user data while replacing damaged program components. If Repair is unavailable or does not help, use the application’s own uninstaller, then restart Windows.
Reinstall from the official publisher
Download the same supported edition only from the software publisher’s official site. Avoid repackaged installers, file-sharing mirrors and standalone “sitool.exe” downloads. Install after your security scan is clean, then verify the new file’s path and signature. The reported connection with Antares Auto-Tune Evo VST RTAS applies only to some database samples, so do not install that product merely because your filename matches.

Resolve compatibility and permissions issues
Install available updates for the parent program and Windows. If the program is old, right-click its shortcut, choose Properties > Compatibility and test a compatibility mode only when the publisher recommends it. Do not grant administrator rights permanently just to suppress an error. If the file is on a network, removable or synchronised drive, move or reinstall the parent application to a local supported directory and test again.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Remove an unexpected or detected sitool.exe
Use this branch when you did not install the parent application, the file is detected, the signature is invalid or the scheduled-task and startup checks show unexplained persistence.
- Limit exposure. Disconnect the computer from sensitive services and, if compromise is plausible, temporarily disconnect it from the network. Do not sign in to banking, email or work systems from the affected Windows session while you investigate.
- Run an updated full scan. Update Microsoft Defender or another reputable anti-malware product and perform a full scan. Follow its quarantine instructions. Do not manually replace a quarantined file with one copied from another computer.
- Stop persistence safely. In Task Scheduler, select each task that launches the suspicious path, choose Disable, and save the task name and action. After the scan has completed and you have recorded the details, delete only tasks you can positively tie to the file. If Windows refuses deletion, leave the task disabled and continue with an offline scan rather than repeatedly forcing it.
- Remove startup references. Disable the matching Startup app, remove a matching shortcut from the startup folder, and delete only the registry value that contains the confirmed suspicious path. Export the relevant registry key first. A typo in a registry path can prevent other software from starting.
- Quarantine before deletion. If security software has quarantined the file, do not restore it. If no product has detected it but every verification check points to an unwanted executable, end its process from Task Manager, ensure associated tasks are disabled, and move the file to a separate quarantine folder or delete it only after preserving the hash and path. Empty the Recycle Bin after you are confident no legitimate application depends on it.
- Use an offline environment when removal fails. Run Windows Recovery or a trusted offline rescue environment if the file recreates itself, cannot be removed while Windows is running or continues to trigger detections. Offline scanning prevents many persistence processes from loading first.
- Protect accounts. If malware is confirmed, change important passwords from a known-clean device, starting with email and accounts that can reset other passwords. Revoke unfamiliar sessions and review multifactor-authentication prompts. Do not reuse a password that was entered on the affected computer.
- Escalate serious cases. A work-managed computer, evidence of data theft, repeated reinfection or a failed offline cleanup merits professional incident-response help. Preserve scan results, scheduled-task names, hashes and timestamps instead of wiping evidence prematurely.
Repair Windows file-handling problems
Sometimes the error appears while copying, moving, renaming, deleting or otherwise handling the file rather than while running it. Microsoft documents an automatic File and Folder Troubleshooter for those operations. Use it when Windows reports permission, path or deletion problems, and follow its instructions for the affected folder. The Microsoft Support Diagnostic Tool (MSDT) used by older troubleshooters is deprecated, so do not search for an old MSDT package or download one from an unofficial site.
Best Value
Check permissions and locks
Confirm that your account has permission to the containing folder. In Properties > Security, use the advanced view to identify the owner and entries denying access. Do not take ownership of a system or work-managed folder merely to delete one file. Restart Windows, close programs that may have an open handle and retry. If the file is still locked, Safe Mode or an offline environment is safer than force-deleting random system files.
Repair broader Windows corruption
If unrelated applications also crash or files cannot be accessed, treat sitool.exe as a symptom rather than the sole cause. Install pending Windows updates, restart, and test with a new local user profile. Back up personal data before deeper repairs. Repeated memory-reference errors across different programs should also prompt a hardware-memory and storage-health check; replacing sitool.exe will not correct failing hardware.
Quick Recap
Why sitool.exe may keep crashing
- Damaged or incomplete installation: Repair or reinstall the identified parent application.
- Version incompatibility: Update the application and Windows, or use a publisher-supported compatibility setting.
- Missing supporting files: Use the application’s installer or Repair option rather than downloading individual DLLs from random sites.
- Blocked execution: Check Protection history, signature status and Core isolation messages. Do not weaken security protections simply to make an unknown file run.
- Malware or persistence: Scan, inspect scheduled tasks and startup entries, and use an offline rescue environment when necessary.
- Underlying hardware or system instability: Widespread crashes, disk errors or memory faults require Windows and hardware troubleshooting beyond this executable.
A practical decision path
- If the path, publisher, signature and parent installer all match software you intentionally installed, repair that application and reinstall it from the official publisher if needed.
- If the file is unsigned or unknown but no detection exists, do not launch it; collect the hash, submit it to a reputable analysis service and complete a full scan.
- If current security software detects it or a scheduled task launches it from an unexpected AppData directory, quarantine it, disable the persistence mechanism and scan offline if removal is difficult.
- If the file is gone but Windows still shows an error, remove stale startup references, repair the parent application or use the File and Folder Troubleshooter for handling failures.
- If the machine shows account compromise, repeated reinfection or business impact, isolate it and obtain professional help.
