Silicon photonics is a semiconductor manufacturing platform for guiding and processing light on silicon-based integrated circuits. A complete optical link adds a laser, electronic driver and receiver circuits, packaging, connectors and fibre. In data centres, that platform is already used in replaceable optical transceivers and is also being developed for optical engines positioned beside switch or compute chips.
Its practical value is moving more data farther while reducing the electrical-link burden at very high rates. The result is not automatically lower power or lower cost: the outcome depends on the link standard, fibre, host equipment, packaging, cooling, reliability and service model.

What silicon photonics actually is
Silicon photonics is the integration of optical functions on a silicon-based photonic integrated circuit (PIC). Microscopic waveguides route light across the chip, while optical components encode, combine, separate and detect signals. Semiconductor fabrication methods can produce these structures at scale and place many optical functions in a compact area.
The phrase describes a platform, not a complete network product. A data-centre transceiver or optical engine also needs a light source, electronic signal-conditioning and control circuits, a package, a fibre-coupling arrangement and host interfaces. Designs differ: some combine laser technology closely with the photonics package, while others use a separate laser source. There is no single laser, package or connector arrangement shared by every silicon-photonics product.

That distinction matters when comparing equipment. A module labelled “silicon photonics” still has to meet a particular Ethernet or multi-source agreement (MSA) specification, lane rate, wavelength plan, fibre type, connector and reach.
How a silicon-photonics link works
1. The PIC routes and modifies light
Optical waveguides on the PIC carry light between components. Modulators vary the light to represent transmitted electrical data, and photodetectors convert incoming optical changes back into electrical signals. Multiple lanes or wavelengths can operate in parallel, allowing a small package to carry a high aggregate rate.
2. Electronics prepare the signal
Driver circuits control the modulator, while receiver electronics amplify, condition and interpret the detector output. Host equipment may also use high-speed SerDes circuits and a digital signal processor (DSP). These electrical functions remain part of the power and thermal budget even when the data travels through fibre.

3. A laser supplies the optical carrier
The PIC needs light to modulate. Depending on the design, the laser may be integrated with the photonics platform or mounted as a separate source. Laser coupling, alignment, temperature control and reliability are package-level engineering issues rather than consequences of the silicon label alone.
4. Packaging connects the chip to fibre
The optical package aligns the PIC with one or more fibre channels and exposes the electrical host interface. Fibre coupling, connector geometry, heat removal and manufacturing yield can determine whether a design is practical at scale. A transceiver therefore represents a system assembled around the PIC, not merely a bare optical chip.

Replaceable pluggable transceivers
A pluggable transceiver sits in a switch, router or server port. Its electrical side connects to the host, and its optical side connects to a fibre link. The module translates between electrical and optical signals and can be replaced without replacing the switch ASIC.
This architecture is operationally familiar: technicians can change a failed or upgraded module at the faceplate, and a switch vendor can support several module generations over the life of a platform. The trade-off is the electrical path between the switch ASIC and the faceplate. As lane rates rise, that board-level path requires increasingly demanding signal integrity, retimers or DSP processing and careful power management.
Optical engines beside switch or compute chips
An optical engine places the optical conversion much closer to the ASIC or compute package. The shorter electrical connection can reduce the distance over which very high-speed signals must travel before becoming light. This approach is commonly discussed as co-packaged optics (CPO) when the optical engines are integrated close to or in the same package as the switch ASIC.
CPO and silicon photonics are not synonyms. CPO describes placement and packaging; silicon photonics is one implementation platform that may be used inside that architecture. A CPO design could use a silicon-photonics PIC, but the packaging concept does not by itself specify the PIC technology.
How it can improve network performance
Longer practical reach than board-level electrical links
Fibre can connect equipment across distances that are difficult for high-speed copper traces or cables. The exact distance is a property of the complete interface: optical standard, fibre type, connector, wavelength, transmit power, receiver sensitivity and link margin. Silicon photonics provides a compact way to implement the transmitter and receiver; it does not grant every module the same reach.

More bandwidth in a small footprint
Integrating waveguides, modulators and detectors makes it possible to combine several optical lanes or wavelengths in a compact module or engine. Intel’s portfolio lists 400G, 800G and 1.6Tbps component solutions, while its launched products include 100G, 200G and 400G transceivers. Those figures describe specific vendor products and interfaces, not a universal capability of every silicon-photonics PIC.
Less pressure on electrical I/O
At high aggregate rates, driving electrical signals from a switch chip across a circuit board to a faceplate module consumes power and demands sophisticated signal conditioning. Moving optical conversion next to the ASIC shortens that electrical segment. In principle, this allows higher bandwidth density and can improve energy efficiency at the system level, because the electrical path is shorter and less lossy.
The benefit must be measured across the whole system. Host SerDes and DSP power, laser power, module electronics, cooling and the network’s traffic pattern all contribute to energy per delivered bit. A silicon-photonics link is not automatically more efficient than a copper link with a different rate, reach or architecture.
Semiconductor manufacturing scale
Using silicon fabrication methods can support repeatable production of many PICs. Intel reports that it has shipped more than 8 million silicon-photonics PICs and more than 32 million on-chip lasers since 2016. These are cumulative figures reported by Intel on its product information page, accessed in 2026; they are not an independently audited industry total or a market-size estimate.
Pluggable optics versus co-packaged optics
| Aspect | Pluggable optics | Co-packaged optics |
|---|---|---|
| Placement | Replaceable module at the equipment faceplate | Optical engines integrated close to or in the switch-ASIC package |
| Electrical path | Longer connection from ASIC across the board to the module | Short connection before optical conversion |
| Service model | Module can generally be replaced without replacing the ASIC | Optical attachment, package repair and replacement are tightly coupled to the system |
| Main engineering focus | Faceplate density, signal integrity, fibre routing and module cooling | Package yield, optical alignment, thermal interaction, testing and repairability |
Pluggables therefore favour field serviceability and incremental upgrades, while CPO targets electrical efficiency and density at very high aggregate bandwidths. The right choice depends on the operator’s maintenance model and the host platform, not on the technology name alone.

A concrete 400G example
Intel’s 400G DR4+ brief describes a QSFP-DD, single-mode-fibre module for 400GbE or four 100GbE breakout links, with reach up to 2 km under the stated interface specifications.
| Specification | Stated value |
|---|---|
| Aggregate rate | 400GbE |
| Breakout mode | 4 × 100GbE |
| Form factor | QSFP-DD |
| Fibre | Single-mode fibre |
| Reach | Up to 2 km |
The table describes that particular brief, not every QSFP-DD module. Before ordering, verify that the switch or server supports the exact host port, module coding, Ethernet or MSA specification, breakout configuration, fibre plant and management functions. A nominally matching rate is insufficient if the host firmware, connector or optical budget differs.
What changes for power and cooling
Silicon photonics can reduce the electrical distance to the optical conversion point, but total power still includes the laser, modulator drivers, receiver electronics, SerDes, DSP, voltage regulators and cooling. A module that reaches farther or performs more signal processing may use more power than a shorter-reach alternative.
Thermal design also changes with architecture. Pluggable modules dissipate heat at the faceplate and must fit the switch’s airflow and temperature limits. An optical engine near an ASIC shares a package environment with a high-power chip, so the package must manage thermal interaction without disturbing optical alignment or reliability. Compare energy at the same rate, reach, fibre, reliability target and service model rather than quoting a generic percentage saving.

- Define the traffic requirement. Record aggregate throughput, per-lane rate, lane count and whether the link must support breakout.
- Check the physical path. Identify the fibre type, connector, wavelength plan, patch-panel route and required distance. Confirm the optical budget and margin for the installed plant.
- Verify host compatibility. Match the Ethernet or MSA specification, form factor, port speed, module management and any vendor qualification list on both ends.
- Calculate system power. Include host SerDes or DSP, transceiver or optical-engine power, laser consumption and cooling overhead. Use energy per delivered bit for a fair comparison.
- Plan operations. Decide how modules will be replaced, how fibres will be cleaned and inspected, what diagnostics are available and how spares will be stocked.
- Assess integration risk. For an optical engine or CPO design, examine package yield, fibre attachment, test coverage, repair path and component replacement policy.

Assuming the label guarantees performance
“Silicon photonics” does not specify rate, reach or power. Fix the mistake by evaluating the complete module or engine data sheet against the intended standard and fibre.

Ignoring the fibre plant
A high-rate module may require single-mode fibre, a particular connector or a defined maximum distance. Confirm the installed cabling before selecting the optics; changing the fibre plant can dominate the project cost and schedule.
Treating a demonstration as deployment
In 2020, Intel announced a demonstration combining a 1.6Tbps silicon-photonics engine with a 12.8Tbps programmable Ethernet switch. That announcement proves an integration demonstration, not broad adoption of CPO in current data-centre switches.
Comparing only module power
Module watts omit host electrical processing and cooling. Compare complete link power under the same bandwidth, distance, reliability and operating conditions.
Overlooking maintenance
Pluggables preserve a straightforward replacement path. CPO can improve density but couples optical attachment, package testing and repair more tightly to the system. Include those labour and downtime implications in the architecture decision.
What the current evidence supports
Silicon photonics is already a commercial platform for data-centre pluggable optics, with vendor products at 100G, 200G and 400G and component offerings listed at 400G, 800G and 1.6Tbps. It is also a candidate technology for optical engines placed beside switch or compute chips. The strongest established advantages are optical reach, compact bandwidth density and a shorter electrical path in near-chip architectures.
Evidence does not justify a single industry-wide power-saving percentage, cost claim or adoption rate. Product availability, lifecycle status and interoperability change by vendor and platform. Treat cumulative shipment numbers and roadmap statements as vendor-specific claims, and validate the exact interface before deployment.
When silicon photonics is the right fit
It is most compelling when a deployment needs high bandwidth over fibre, several optical lanes in a compact footprint or relief from long, power-hungry electrical connections. It is less useful to choose by branding when a short, low-rate link already meets requirements with simpler optics or copper.
