What Is Samsung Smart Switch, and What Data Does It Transfer?

By Freedom251 Team · · 9 min read

Samsung Smart Switch is Samsung’s migration app for moving supported content to a Galaxy phone or tablet. It can bring over contacts, messages, calendars, call history, photos, videos, music, documents and more. Depending on the source phone and connection method, it may also move apps, app data, Wi‑Fi settings, alarms, wallpaper and parts of your home-screen layout.

It is not a complete clone of your old phone. Account-synced information, private or encrypted app data, some contacts and calendars, DRM-protected media, certain themes and some email accounts may be left out. The categories shown on your own transfer screen are the final authority because support varies by device, software and route.

What Samsung Smart Switch does

Smart Switch is available on Galaxy phones and tablets, as well as for Windows and Mac computers. Its purpose is to move supported data from an old device or a computer backup to a Galaxy destination. Samsung documents four practical routes:

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Direct wireless transfer between phones
  • Direct USB cable transfer between phones
  • Transfer from an iPhone or iCloud
  • Backup and restore through Smart Switch for Windows or Mac

The source device, operating system, connection and destination model determine which categories appear. A Galaxy-to-Galaxy move can expose more settings and app-data options than a transfer from another Android phone, while iPhone migration has a separate set of supported categories.

  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Smart Switch is a migration tool, not an exact clone

After a transfer, you may still need to sign in to accounts, reinstall an app, recreate some settings or use an app maker’s own backup process. Smart Switch moves data Samsung identifies as exportable; it does not bypass account security, app privacy protections or digital-rights restrictions.

What can be transferred with Smart Switch?

The following table summarizes Samsung’s documented categories. “May” means the option depends on the source device, destination and route; it is not a promise that every phone will offer it.

Category Android to Galaxy iPhone to Galaxy PC/Mac backup and restore
Contacts Yes, subject to account and SIM exclusions Yes Yes, subject to source and account exclusions
Calendars or schedules Yes, but externally synced appointments may be excluded Yes Yes, where supported by the backup

Android-to-Galaxy transfers

Core personal content

Samsung lists contacts, calendars or schedules, messages, call logs, notes or memos, photos, music, videos and documents as Android-transfer categories. These cover the information most people need when replacing a phone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Settings and app data

Depending on the Android source and connection, Smart Switch may also offer apps, app data, email settings, alarms, Wi‑Fi settings, wallpaper, lock-screen and home-screen layouts, and other preferences. Samsung distinguishes a Galaxy source from a non-Galaxy Android source: Galaxy-to-Galaxy transfers generally expose more Samsung-specific settings and data, while another Android manufacturer may provide fewer options.

Do not interpret an app appearing in the selection list as proof that its private data will move. Apps can store information in protected locations, require a separate export, or depend on an online account.

iPhone-to-Galaxy transfers

Samsung lists contacts, calendars or schedules, messages, notes, call history, bookmarks, photos, videos, documents, voice memos, recommended apps, Wi‑Fi settings and alarms for iPhone migration. The exact list depends on whether you use a cable or an iCloud route and on the phones involved.

Using iCloud

The iCloud route requires an internet or data connection. It can retrieve supported information from the iCloud account, but it is not a guarantee that every category stored by an iPhone will appear on the Galaxy. Sign-in, account permissions and the items Samsung supports for that route all matter.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Music, video and wallpaper limits

Samsung says music and video must be DRM-free. Its US support information notes that qualifying iTunes music purchased after 2009 may transfer, while older purchases may still be DRM-protected. Native iPhone wallpapers are not transferred through the documented path; a personal photo used as wallpaper may be included as a photo.

Smart Switch for Windows or Mac

The desktop utility can create a backup of a source phone and restore selected content to a Galaxy device. Samsung’s US list includes contacts, schedules, messages, photos and videos, music, call logs, documents and apps. For supported Galaxy backups, it also lists selected app data, home- and lock-screen layouts and settings.

A backup file can contain information that cannot be opened or read directly on the computer. For example, messages may be stored in the backup but become readable only after you restore them to a phone. Treat the computer as a transport and restore point, not as a general-purpose viewer for every backed-up item.

What Smart Switch does not reliably transfer

Data already synchronized to an account

Information synchronized with an online account may not be copied by Smart Switch. After you add the same account to the Galaxy, that data can reappear through synchronization. This is common with cloud-managed contacts, calendars, photos and other account-owned content. If an item matters, check both the old phone and the account before erasing the old device.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Contacts and calendars with special sources

Samsung’s lists exclude some SIM contacts, social-network contacts, Google-account contacts and work-account contacts from particular backup categories. Appointments synchronized with external calendar accounts can likewise be excluded. The exact exclusions are route-specific, so inspect the selection screen and plan to sign in to the relevant account on the Galaxy.

Private, secure or encrypted app data

Data held in an app’s private storage cannot be backed up by Smart Switch. Samsung’s UK guidance separately warns that secure or encrypted data, including WhatsApp chats in its example, may not transfer through the described workflow. Use the app provider’s own export, cloud backup or device-to-device migration procedure for important conversations, tokens and files.

Apps, credentials and unsupported app stores

An app may need to be downloaded again, may have no equivalent in the destination app store or may require a fresh sign-in. Some apps deliberately do not pass passwords, authentication credentials or protected databases to a new phone. Keep recovery codes and account passwords available before starting.

DRM-protected media

Samsung says DRM-protected music and video are incompatible with Smart Switch. A file can therefore remain on the old device even when ordinary photos, videos and documents transfer successfully.

Themes and certain email accounts

Samsung’s US documentation lists live wallpapers, themes and some email account types among items that cannot be backed up. You may need to recreate the visual setup and add the account manually on the Galaxy.

How to transfer your data

Wireless phone-to-phone transfer

  1. Install or open Smart Switch on both phones and place them near each other.
  2. On the Galaxy destination, choose to receive data; on the old phone, choose to send data.
  3. Select the wireless option and accept the connection prompts on both devices.
  4. Review the categories Smart Switch offers. Expand the details rather than assuming every app or account item is included.
  5. Start the transfer and keep both phones powered on and close together until the completion screen appears.
  6. Sign in to accounts and open important apps to confirm that their data is available.

Wireless transfer avoids a cable, but a large photo or video library can take time. Keep both batteries charged and avoid interrupting the connection.

USB cable transfer

  1. Use a compatible, data-capable cable and the correct connector or adapter for both phones. A charging-only cable will not work.
  2. Open Smart Switch on the Galaxy and select the option to receive data from the old phone.
  3. Connect the phones, unlock them and approve the prompts shown on each screen.
  4. Choose the categories and review any exclusions Smart Switch reports.
  5. Start the copy and leave the cable connected until the transfer finishes.

Cable requirements depend on the ports and models. You may already own a suitable cable; check that it supports data before buying another one.

iCloud transfer

  1. On the Galaxy, open Smart Switch and choose the iPhone or iCloud route.
  2. Connect to a reliable Wi‑Fi or mobile-data network.
  3. Sign in to the requested iCloud account and complete any verification prompts.
  4. Choose the available categories, start the transfer and wait for the import to finish.
  5. Review contacts, calendars, photos and messages separately because iCloud availability differs by category.

Do not erase the iPhone until you have checked the Galaxy and confirmed that any missing app data has been handled through the app’s own migration process.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Backup and restore with a computer

  1. Install Smart Switch for Windows or Mac and connect the old phone with a data-capable USB cable.
  2. In the desktop app, choose the backup command and select the supported categories you want to preserve.
  3. Wait for the backup to complete before disconnecting the old phone.
  4. Connect the Galaxy destination and choose restore.
  5. Select the backup and the categories to restore, then keep the phone connected until Smart Switch reports completion.
  6. On the Galaxy, sign in to accounts and test the restored apps and files.

Requirements and compatibility

Samsung Ireland currently lists Android 6.0 or later and iOS 12.0 or later for phone and tablet support, Windows 10 or later for PC backup and restore, and macOS X 10.13 or later for Mac. These are regional page requirements, not a universal guarantee for every model or country. Samsung’s support pages also state that supported items can change with the connected device.

  • Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
  • Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.

  • A charged source and destination device
  • A stable wireless connection for wireless or iCloud transfers
  • A compatible data cable for wired or computer transfers
  • Account passwords and two-factor verification access
  • App-specific backups for encrypted chats or other private data

Before starting, update Smart Switch and the phone software when practical, note which accounts hold your contacts and calendars, and check the transfer screen for your exact models.

Which transfer method should you choose?

Situation Practical first choice Why
Galaxy to Galaxy and you want settings or layouts Direct cable or wireless transfer These routes can expose Galaxy-specific settings and app-data options.
Another Android phone to Galaxy Cable or wireless, then verify apps Core personal content is supported, but settings and private app data vary more by source.
iPhone nearby with a suitable cable Direct cable It avoids depending on an iCloud download and shows the categories available from the connected phone.
iPhone without a cable or with an iCloud backup iCloud route It can retrieve supported cloud data when internet access is available.
You want a recoverable copy before changing phones Windows or Mac backup, then restore A computer backup provides a separate restore point, although its contents are not all readable on the computer.

No Samsung documentation establishes one route as best for everyone. Choose based on the source operating system, the categories you need, the availability of a data cable or internet connection, and the storage on the Galaxy.

Checks to perform after the transfer

  • Open Contacts and verify recent entries, account labels and important phone numbers.
  • Check Messages and call history for the date range you need.
  • Open Calendar and confirm that account-synced appointments appear after account sign-in.
  • Browse photos, videos, music and documents, including files stored in less obvious folders.
  • Launch banking, messaging, password-manager and authentication apps; expect some to require reactivation.
  • Recreate wallpapers, themes, email accounts or alarms that were not included.
  • Keep the old phone untouched until these checks and any app-specific restores are complete.

Common problems and fixes

A category is missing

The source device, route or account type may not support it. Try the other documented route, sign in to the account that owns the data, or export the information from the original app.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The transfer stops or is slow

Charge both devices, keep them close for wireless transfer, close unnecessary apps and ensure the Galaxy has enough free storage. For large libraries, a cable or computer backup can reduce wireless interruptions.

An app transferred but its data did not

Reinstall or update the app, sign in again and check its own backup or migration settings. Private, encrypted and credential-bearing data commonly requires the app provider’s procedure.

Photos or music are absent

Check whether the files are DRM-protected, stored only in a cloud account or located in an unsupported app container. Sign in to the relevant account and copy ordinary files through a supported route.

The practical bottom line

Smart Switch is an effective way to move supported personal content to a Galaxy phone or tablet, especially contacts, messages, calendars, call logs, photos, videos and documents. Galaxy sources can provide additional settings and app-data options, while iPhone and computer routes have their own category lists. Treat it as a selective migration rather than a perfect phone clone: verify the transfer screen, preserve account access, use app-specific backups for private data, and confirm everything important before wiping the old device.
