What Is Same-Store Sales Growth, and How Is It Different From Revenue Growth?

Same-store sales growth measures the percentage change in sales from a defined group of existing, comparable locations over matching periods. Revenue growth measures the change in all revenue the company reports. Same-store growth is intended to show how an established store base is performing; revenue growth also reflects new or closed locations, acquisitions, divestitures and revenue streams outside store merchandise, depending on the company.

Because every issuer sets its own eligibility and calculation rules, “same-store sales,” “comparable sales” and “comparable-store sales” are not automatically interchangeable. The definition and footnotes matter as much as the headline percentage.

What same-store sales growth measures

Retailers first define a comparable base: locations that were open long enough, and under sufficiently similar conditions, to be compared in both periods. They then compare sales from that base in the current period with sales from the same base in the prior period.

The general calculation is:

Same-store sales growth (%) = (current-period sales from the comparable base − prior-period sales from that base) ÷ prior-period sales from that base × 100.

For example, suppose qualifying stores generated $100 million in the prior period and $105 million in the current period. The same-store sales growth is 5%. Those figures are illustrative, not a reported company statistic.

The measure answers a focused question: “How did locations that can reasonably be compared perform?” It does not attempt to describe every dollar the company recognized.

How revenue growth is different

Revenue growth compares the company’s total reported revenue between two periods:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Revenue growth (%) = (current total revenue − prior total revenue) ÷ prior total revenue × 100.

Total revenue can include sales from stores of different ages, newly opened or acquired locations, online channels, services, advertising, financial arrangements and other activities. The exact mix depends on the company’s business and accounting presentation.

Measure What it includes What it is mainly used to show
Same-store sales growth Sales from an issuer-defined comparable group of established locations and channels Underlying performance of the comparable store base
Revenue growth All revenue reported by the company for the period Change in the company’s overall top line

Imagine a retailer whose comparable stores rise from $100 million to $105 million, a 5% increase, while total revenue rises from $200 million to $230 million, a 15% increase. New stores, acquisitions or other businesses could account for the additional growth. Conversely, a retailer can report flat or falling revenue while comparable stores grow if locations were closed, sold or otherwise removed from the reporting footprint.

Why the two rates often diverge

New and closed locations

Opening stores adds sales to revenue but does not normally add those locations to the comparable base immediately. Closing stores removes sales from revenue. A same-store measure is designed to exclude those footprint changes, allowing an analyst to separate expansion from the performance of established locations.

Drive Shack’s annual-report definition, for example, uses stores open for comparable weeks in both periods and excludes the effects of openings, closures, acquisitions and divestitures. Other issuers use different thresholds or exclusions.

Revenue beyond store merchandise

A company’s “revenue” label may cover more than merchandise sold in stores. Target states that its net sales include merchandise and other sources, notably advertising revenue and credit-card profit-sharing income. Such items can change total revenue even when store merchandise sales are unchanged.

Different channels

Some issuers include online orders in comparable sales; others limit the metric to physical stores or disclose separate channel measures. Walmart says its stated comparable-sales method includes digitally initiated ecommerce sales, including certain omnichannel activity. An online shift can therefore affect the comparable rate even if a store’s register transactions do not change.

Comparable sales are not defined by one universal rule

Walmart’s FY2026 annual report says the method of calculating comparable sales varies across the retail industry and warns that its measure may not be comparable with similarly titled measures at other companies. Boot Barn gives a similar warning. SNDL describes its same-store sales measure as non-IFRS and says its calculation may differ from other companies’ calculations.

Before using a percentage in a comparison, identify the issuer’s rules in the earnings release, annual report or footnote.

Eligibility age and operating history

The minimum time a location must operate before entering the comparable base differs. Walmart describes a previous-12-month store and club base. Jersey Mike’s uses traditional locations open at least 425 days and excludes materially different non-traditional formats. A retailer using a 12-month rule and one using a 425-day rule may report rates for bases with different maturity and seasonal exposure.

Period alignment

Periods must cover comparable selling time, but companies do not always use the same calendar. Walmart distinguishes calendar comparisons from retail-calendar reporting and notes that quarterly releases may use a retail calendar. Drive Shack refers to comparable weeks. A 13-week retail quarter, a calendar quarter and a period affected by a shifted holiday can produce different results even for the same stores.

Included channels and sales types

Read whether the calculation includes ecommerce, delivery, pickup, marketplace sales or only transactions recorded at a physical location. Also check whether the company reports merchandise sales, net sales, total revenue or another sales concept. A channel included in one company’s comparable figure may be excluded from another’s.

Currency treatment

Jersey Mike’s states its traditional-store comparable-sales growth on a constant-currency basis. Constant-currency reporting removes exchange-rate movement from the comparison. A retailer reporting in actual currency can show a different rate even when local-currency sales trends are similar.

Remodels, relocations and unusual closures

Companies differ in how they treat stores that are remodeled, relocated, temporarily closed or materially expanded. Some remove affected periods from the base; others keep the location if it meets their stated criteria. Do not assume that “open” means “unaffected.”

What causes same-store sales growth?

The headline percentage is an outcome, not a diagnosis. Jersey Mike’s describes same-store growth as being driven by transactions and average check. A useful decomposition asks whether customers bought more often, spent more per transaction, paid higher prices, selected a different product mix, or some combination.

Transactions

More visits or orders generally increase sales volume. A company may disclose transaction growth, traffic, guest counts or order counts separately. If it does not, the same-store headline alone cannot establish that traffic rose.

Average check

A higher average amount per transaction can result from price increases, customers buying more items, premium product choices or a combination. Average check growth does not necessarily mean more customers visited.

Price and product mix

Inflationary price changes can lift sales dollars while unit volume is flat or lower. A shift toward higher-priced categories can also raise the average check. Conversely, discounting or a larger share of low-priced products can suppress sales dollars even when transaction counts increase.

External and calendar factors

Boot Barn lists national and regional economic conditions, local preferences, product mix, pricing, competition, promotion timing, holidays, seasonal periods and weather as factors affecting same-store sales. These influences can vary by geography and quarter, so one period should not be treated as a permanent trend without context.

How to read a company’s same-store figure

  1. Find the formal definition. Look in the earnings release, annual report or non-GAAP/non-IFRS reconciliation for the exact comparable-sales wording.
  2. Identify the base. Note the minimum days or months open, eligible store formats and any treatment of remodels, relocations, acquisitions and closures.
  3. Check the time comparison. Confirm whether the company uses calendar periods, retail-calendar weeks or another comparable-week method.
  4. Check channels and currency. Determine whether ecommerce or omnichannel orders are included and whether the result is reported in actual or constant currency.
  5. Read the sales concept. Establish whether the percentage refers to merchandise sales, net sales, systemwide sales or another measure rather than assuming it equals company revenue.
  6. Look for the drivers. Review transaction, traffic, average-check, price, mix and promotional commentary. Do not infer a specific driver when the company has not disclosed it.
  7. Compare only after normalizing definitions. Two percentages are meaningfully comparable only when their bases, periods, channels, currencies and store formats are sufficiently alike.

How to interpret common combinations

Same-store sales Total revenue Possible reading
Up Up faster Established stores are growing, while openings, acquisitions, online expansion or other revenue streams add further growth.
Up Up more slowly Comparable stores improve, but closures, divestitures, currency effects or weaker non-store revenue offset part of the gain.
Flat or down Up New locations, acquisitions, expanded channels or other businesses may be lifting the overall top line despite weak established-store performance.
Up Down The comparable base improves, but the company may have closed or sold locations, lost other revenue or faced a reporting-period effect.
Down Down faster Established locations are weakening and footprint or other revenue changes are adding to the decline.

These are analytical possibilities, not automatic explanations. The company’s footprint reconciliation and revenue notes are needed to identify the actual cause.

Same-store sales versus systemwide sales

“Systemwide sales” is another nearby term, especially in franchised businesses. It generally refers to sales made across a broader network, including franchised locations, rather than revenue recognized by the corporate entity. Jersey Mike’s explicitly states that systemwide sales do not reflect its revenue and should not substitute for total revenues.

That distinction matters because a franchisor may receive royalties or fees rather than the full sale made by each franchisee. Always determine whose sales a metric represents before comparing it with a company’s reported revenue.

Practical example with a changing footprint

Assume a retailer had 100 qualifying stores last year. Those stores produced $100 million. This year, the same 100 stores produce $104 million, while 20 newly opened stores generate $26 million. Comparable-store sales growth is 4%: ($104 million − $100 million) ÷ $100 million. Total store sales are now $130 million, up 30% from the prior-year $100 million store base, before considering any other revenue.

The 4% figure describes the established locations. The larger total-store increase describes the combined effect of established stores and expansion. Neither figure is “the correct” one; each answers a different question.

Limits and pitfalls

  • Treating the rate as a universal accounting standard: comparable-sales definitions are issuer-specific and may be non-IFRS or non-GAAP measures.
  • Comparing unlike periods: shifted holidays, retail-calendar weeks and weather can distort a direct quarter-to-quarter comparison.
  • Ignoring ecommerce treatment: digital orders may be included, excluded or allocated differently.
  • Assuming sales growth equals volume growth: prices and mix can raise dollars while transactions or units decline.
  • Confusing company revenue with network sales: systemwide sales may include franchisee activity that the company does not recognize as revenue.
  • Using an old definition indefinitely: issuers can change eligibility, channel coverage or presentation in later filings. Use the definition that applies to the period being analyzed.

Bottom line for investors and operators

Same-store sales growth is a focused measure of an issuer-defined group of comparable locations. Revenue growth is the change in the company’s entire reported revenue base. Use same-store growth to assess established-location momentum, and use revenue growth to understand the scale of the whole business. For a sound conclusion, read both measures together with the eligibility rules, period alignment, channel and currency treatment, footprint changes and any disclosed transaction or average-check data.
