Set in a steampunk alternate history, it combines character-focused storytelling and stage performance with battles against threats to the city. The 2019 game—released in Japan as Shin Sakura Wars and in the West as Sakura Wars—offers a new story and action-based mecha combat.
What is Sakura Wars?
Sakura Wars, known in Japanese as Sakura Taisen, began with a game released for Sega Saturn in Japan on September 27, 1996. SEGA describes its setting as a fictional Taishō era with steampunk technology. Its central idea is a combat unit whose members perform in a theater when the city is at peace and fight to protect it when danger appears. The original unit, the Imperial Combat Revue, is based at Tokyo’s Imperial Theater.

The franchise’s appeal comes from bringing those roles together: the characters’ friendships and trust matter to the story, while their public performances and battles give the group distinct work both on and off the battlefield. SEGA’s 2019 announcement reported more than four million cumulative domestic shipments for the series and related works; that figure is for Japan, not global sales or the 2019 game alone. SEGA’s announcement provides the franchise background and figure.

Dialogue and relationships
The game uses the series’ LIPS dialogue system: the player’s responses and the way they are delivered affect relationships with other characters. Those conversations are part of the route into the story’s action, rather than a separate theater-management game.
Action mecha battles
In battle, characters pilot giant steam-powered mecha. The 2019 game uses action-focused combat, a change from the tactical battle system associated with earlier entries. In SEGA of America’s launch coverage, producer Tetsu Katano discussed that shift from the older games’ 2D anime-style presentation and tactical combat.

Is the new Sakura Wars connected to the old games?
The 2019 title is best understood as a new beginning for players, not as a direct continuation of the earlier cast’s story. SEGA of America described it as an all-new narrative intended for both newcomers and longtime fans. That makes it an accessible way to experience the franchise’s theater-and-combat premise without first playing the 1996 game. It is still part of the broader series, whose official chronology includes multiple numbered games and spin-offs.
