rundemo.exe is not a unique Windows component, so its filename cannot establish whether it is safe. Mapnik, a mapping toolkit, distributed a legitimate demo program with this name, while unrelated software may use it too. Identify the exact file path, publisher, signature and parent application before deciding whether to repair, quarantine or remove it. For the documented Mapnik version, errors commonly result from an incorrect working directory, missing demo data, an invalid installation path or unavailable DLLs.
What rundemo.exe is
An executable name is only an identifier chosen by a software developer. Windows does not reserve rundemo.exe for one built-in service, and Microsoft does not ship a universal Windows component with that name. Two files with the same name can be completely unrelated and have different publishers, permissions, dependencies and behavior.

One documented legitimate source is Mapnik. Mapnik published Windows binaries on April 27, 2007 that included a small demo application called rundemo.exe. The demo creates two map images from sample data and accepts a Mapnik installation path. The announcement is available at Mapnik’s Windows binaries page.

Mapnik’s C++ example documentation describes rundemo.cpp as a simple C++ API demonstration. Its Windows build notes mention Microsoft Visual Studio 2010, Python 2.x and gyp, then show the executable being launched with the Mapnik prefix: Release\rundemo.exe %MAPNIK_PREFIX%. Those are requirements for that historical example, not requirements for every program named rundemo.exe. The example documentation is archived at the Mapnik C++ README.

Consequently, “What is rundemo.exe?” has to be answered for the copy on your computer. The directory, file metadata and software that installed it matter more than the spelling of the name.
Is rundemo.exe safe?
There is no filename-only safety verdict. A rundemo.exe inside a Mapnik directory, installed intentionally with Mapnik, may be the legitimate demonstration program. A file with the same name in a temporary folder, a random Downloads subfolder, an unexpected startup location or a directory belonging to an unknown program deserves investigation. Malware can also be given an ordinary-sounding name, and a legitimate file can be damaged or replaced.
Microsoft distinguishes unfamiliar software from confirmed malware. Its guidance says, Not all uncommon programs are malicious, but the risk in the unknown category is higher for the typical user.

Do not approve an exclusion or choose an “Allow” action merely because the file is called rundemo.exe. A trustworthy assessment combines the complete path, the product and company fields, the digital signature, the installer that created the file, the file’s hash reputation and current antivirus results.

Identify the exact copy on your PC
Perform these checks before deleting, replacing or whitelisting the file. If the process is running, save the path first; a process name alone is not enough to identify the executable.
- Open the file location. In Task Manager, right-click the process and choose Open file location. In File Explorer, use the address bar to copy the complete path, including the drive letter and every parent directory. If the process has already closed, search for
rundemo.exeand record each copy rather than assuming they are identical. - Read the file properties. Right-click the file, select Properties, and inspect Details. Record the Product name, Company, file description and version. A Mapnik installation should have nearby Mapnik libraries or data directories; unrelated product information points to a different troubleshooting path.
- Check the digital signature. On the Digital Signatures tab, select a signature and choose Details. A valid signature identifies the signer and confirms that the signed contents have not changed since signing. A missing or invalid signature is a warning, not conclusive proof of malware: older legitimate utilities may be unsigned, and a valid signature does not tell you whether you wanted the software.
- Establish provenance. Ask which installer, package manager or application created the file. Look at the surrounding directory and the application’s entry in Settings > Apps > Installed apps (or Control Panel > Programs and Features on older Windows). If nobody intentionally installed the parent application, treat the file as untrusted until a scan and further analysis explain it.
- Record a hash when needed. For a stable fingerprint, open PowerShell in the file’s directory and run
Get-FileHash .\rundemo.exe -Algorithm SHA256. Keep the original file isolated while you submit the hash or sample through Microsoft’s security-analysis service. A matching hash can connect the file to a known release; it cannot by itself prove that the release is appropriate for your PC.
What different rundemo.exe errors usually mean

These categories are not interchangeable. A Mapnik path error is fixed by correcting the prefix or working directory; a malware detection is handled by containment and scanning; an unknown parent application may require uninstalling that application. The exact message and path determine which branch applies.
Fix the documented Mapnik rundemo.exe variant
1. Confirm the expected directory layout
Mapnik’s example expects demo data relative to its working directory. In the documented layout, the executable is under a demo\c++ tree and looks for data in ../data/. If you double-click the file from another directory, Windows may start it with a different current directory and the demo can report missing files even though the data is installed.

2. Start it with the Mapnik prefix
Open Command Prompt, change to the Mapnik C++ demo directory, and pass the installation prefix. A command matching the documentation is:

Releaserundemo.exe %MAPNIK_PREFIX%Replace the example path with your actual installation. %MAPNIK_PREFIX% must resolve to the directory containing the Mapnik installation, not to the executable itself. If you have not defined that environment variable, provide the full prefix path as the argument instead, for example:
Releaserundemo.exe C:pathtomapnik3. Make Mapnik DLLs discoverable
The demo must be able to load the Mapnik libraries it was built against. Keep the required DLLs in the expected Mapnik directories or add the correct installation directory to the process’s PATH. Do not download individual DLLs from an unrelated website: versions and 32-bit/64-bit architectures must match the executable and the rest of the Mapnik build.
4. Check the input and output location
The 2007 Windows announcement describes a command-line input path for the demo and says it produces map images from demo data. Use the input path supplied by the same Mapnik distribution, ensure the destination is writable, and avoid launching from a protected folder where Windows may block output. If the demo still fails, copy the complete command and error text; a generic “application error” is not enough to select a repair.
5. Rebuild or reinstall the parent package when files are inconsistent
The C++ example documentation lists MSVS 2010, Python 2.x and gyp for its Windows build instructions. Those tools describe that historical build process and may not be suitable for a modern toolchain without adaptation. If you are maintaining a source build, rebuild the example against the same Mapnik headers and libraries. If you installed a binary package, use its repair or reinstall option so that the executable, DLLs and data are restored as one compatible set.

Fix a rundemo.exe error from another application
If the path or Properties page does not identify Mapnik, do not apply Mapnik’s command blindly. The filename is reused, so the correct repair belongs to the owning application.
- Capture the full error. Write down the module name, exception code, missing DLL and the moment the error appears. Take a screenshot if the dialog disappears quickly.
- Update or repair the parent application. Use its own installer, updater or Windows app-repair control. This preserves the versions and registry entries that the program expects.
- Reinstall from the original publisher. Remove the application only after confirming that its data can be backed up. Download a fresh installer from the publisher you intended to use; never substitute a similarly named executable from a file-sharing site.
- Check architecture and dependencies. A 32-bit program may require 32-bit libraries even on 64-bit Windows. Install only runtimes explicitly required by the parent application’s documentation, and avoid replacing a missing DLL with a random copy.
- Investigate startup launches. If the dialog appears at every sign-in, disable the associated startup entry or scheduled task only after identifying its publisher. Removing a shortcut can hide the symptom while leaving the parent software damaged or unwanted.
What to do if rundemo.exe is suspicious or detected
Update Defender before scanning
Open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Protection updates and select Check for updates. Security intelligence must be current for a scan to recognize recent threats. Microsoft recommends updating Defender and running a full scan when unwanted software is suspected; its instructions are at Microsoft’s unwanted-software protection guidance.
Run a full scan
Go to Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Scan options, choose Full scan, and start it. A full scan examines files and running locations across the computer and can take substantially longer than a quick scan. Save work first and allow it to complete.

Open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Protection history and select the detection to see its path and action. Quarantine moves a file to a protected location and blocks it from running; it does not mean the file has been permanently deleted. Microsoft explains this behavior in its Defender antivirus and antimalware FAQ. Keep an uncertain file quarantined while you verify the publisher and hash. Restore it only when the origin is established and the parent application demonstrably needs it.
Use Microsoft Defender Offline for a persistent concern
If detection returns after reboot, the process prevents normal scans, or you suspect a deeper compromise, select Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Scan options > Microsoft Defender Offline scan. Windows restarts and scans before the normal desktop loads, which can prevent an active process from hiding or interfering with the examination. Close applications and save files before starting.
Run the Malicious Software Removal Tool when appropriate
Microsoft’s FAQ identifies the built-in Malicious Software Removal Tool at %windir%\system32\mrt.exe. Open that path or run it from a trusted administrator session and follow its prompts. It is an additional check, not a replacement for current Defender protection or a complete incident-response process.
Do not add a Defender exclusion simply to stop the warning. If the file is required by a known application, first repair or reinstall that application from its legitimate source and rescan the replacement. If the file is unknown and repeatedly detected, keep it blocked and investigate other persistence mechanisms such as scheduled tasks, services and startup entries.

Deletion is safe only after you know what owns the file and whether that software is still needed. Use this decision framework:

Never replace a missing executable by downloading a file with the same name. A filename match does not provide compatible code, a trustworthy signature or the correct dependencies.
Why the error may keep returning
- A scheduled task still launches it: inspect Task Scheduler Library for entries whose action points to the recorded path.
- An incomplete uninstall left an autostart entry: remove the parent product through its uninstaller, then review Task Manager > Startup apps.
- The application is searching relative to the wrong directory: create a shortcut whose Start in field is the Mapnik demo directory, or launch it from Command Prompt as documented.
- Files were mixed between releases: reinstall the complete package instead of copying one executable or DLL from another version.
- Security software is blocking a legitimate but obsolete build: verify the publisher and provenance first; an old date or missing signature is not a reason to weaken protection automatically.
If the dialog continues, collect the path, publisher, signature status, SHA-256 hash, exact error text and the name of the launching task or application. That set of facts lets a support technician distinguish a path problem from a damaged installation or a security incident.
Optional shortcut after the manual checks

rundemo.exe is a reused filename, not proof of a Windows component or a virus. Mapnik’s documented demo is one legitimate source, but the copy on your PC must be judged by its path, publisher, signature, provenance and scan results. Correct Mapnik’s working directory, prefix, data path and DLL availability when those match your installation. For another application, repair or reinstall that parent product. For an unexpected or detected file, update Defender, run a full scan, keep the file quarantined and use Defender Offline when the concern persists.
