What Is Rocket Lab’s Neutron Rocket? Reusable Design, Engines, Capacity and 2027 Launch Target

Neutron is Rocket Lab’s two-stage, medium-lift orbital rocket now in development. Its first stage is designed to return to Earth as one reusable assembly with the interstage and payload fairing still attached, while its carbon-composite second stage is discarded after each mission. Nine methane-and-liquid-oxygen Archimedes engines power the first stage; a vacuum-optimized Archimedes powers the second. Rocket Lab’s latest company target is an inaugural launch in 2027, subject to qualification testing and manufacturing progress.

What Neutron is designed to do

Neutron is intended for missions that need more capacity than a small launcher but do not require the very largest orbital vehicle. Rocket Lab describes it as a commercial constellation and national-security launcher, with planned applications for civil spacecraft and, later, lunar, Mars, cargo and possible human-spaceflight missions. Those future roles are goals rather than demonstrated capabilities: Neutron has not yet flown an orbital mission as of October 18, 2026.

The vehicle uses carbon-composite structures in both stages. Carbon composite can provide a high strength-to-mass ratio, but it also has to survive demanding cryogenic loading, vibration and, for the first stage, atmospheric re-entry. Neutron’s design therefore treats recovery hardware, thermal protection and the fairing as parts of the launch system rather than disposable add-ons.

Which parts are reusable?

Stage 1 returns with the fairing attached

Rocket Lab’s Payload User Guide says the first stage is intended to return as a single assembly that includes the extended interstage and a captive payload fairing. The fairing is not jettisoned and recovered as two separate halves; it remains attached to the returning booster. Reusing that assembly is meant to reduce refurbishment and recovery complexity compared with a design that must find, inspect and refit separate fairing sections after every flight.

The first stage uses a tapered lifting-body shape, forward canards and landing legs. Those features help control its attitude and lift during atmospheric descent. A low ballistic coefficient reduces the rate at which the stage loses altitude and limits heating and aerodynamic loads while it is coming back through the atmosphere.

Stage 2 is expended

The second stage is also carbon composite, but it is not reusable in the published configuration. It accelerates the payload to its target orbit after first-stage separation and is then left in space or disposed of according to the mission profile. Neutron is therefore a partially reusable launch vehicle, not a fully reusable two-stage system.

Thermal protection is part of the recovery system

A reusable thermal-protection system on the thrust structure is intended to withstand the heating experienced during re-entry. The protection must preserve the engine section and surrounding structure for another flight, while the landing hardware has to tolerate the mechanical loads of touchdown. Qualification testing will determine how the production system performs; published design intent is not the same as flight heritage.

How Neutron lands

Return to Launch Site (RTLS)

After the first stage separates from the second stage, Neutron can reserve enough propellant and aerodynamic performance to fly back toward Virginia. In an RTLS profile, the stage returns to Launch Complex 3 (LC-3) at the Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport on Wallops Island. It performs a controlled descent and propulsive landing using its landing legs and onboard guidance.

RTLS is operationally attractive because the stage comes back to the launch area, where ground equipment and inspection facilities can be concentrated. The price is payload performance: flying back to the pad consumes propellant and requires the rocket to carry the energy needed for the return.

Down Range Landing (DRL)

For missions that need more payload capacity, Rocket Lab plans a Down Range Landing. Instead of spending fuel to reverse course to Virginia, the first stage flies downrange and lands propulsively on a marine platform. The shorter return maneuver leaves more performance available for the payload.

Rocket Lab calls the planned recovery platform “Return On Investment.” It is a modified 400-foot (122-meter) barge equipped with autonomous ground-support equipment to capture and secure the landed stage, blast shielding, and station-keeping thrusters for precise positioning. The platform is intended to remain stable under the weather and sea conditions expected during recovery, but actual operating limits will depend on qualification and mission rules.

Why the two landing choices matter

Recovery profile Landing location Payload-performance effect Operational trade-off
RTLS Launch Complex 3, Wallops Island, Virginia Lower than a downrange landing because the stage must fly back Returns the stage to the launch site and avoids an ocean recovery voyage
DRL “Return On Investment” marine platform Higher, because less propellant is spent reversing course Requires a barge, autonomous capture equipment, weather planning and marine operations

What engines does Neutron use?

Archimedes propellant and cycle

Neutron’s Archimedes engine burns liquid methane with liquid oxygen (LOX) in an oxidizer-rich staged-combustion cycle. Rocket Lab says the engine is intended to be reusable, partly 3D printed and designed for lower operating stress to support repeated firings.

Methane occupies a middle ground between kerosene-based RP-1 and liquid hydrogen. According to Rocket Lab’s Payload User Guide, methane can deliver higher specific impulse than RP-1 without imposing the large vehicle-size penalty associated with liquid hydrogen. The choice also has to support a reusable engine and a vehicle that stores cryogenic propellants through launch and recovery operations.

First-stage propulsion

Nine sea-level Archimedes engines power Stage 1. The guide lists up to 165,000 pounds-force (733 kilonewtons) per engine and 1,450,000 pounds-force total for the nine-engine first stage. Rocket Lab’s published dimensions and performance page rounds the first-stage total to 6,600 kN at sea level. The two figures use different unit presentations and should be read as the company’s published per-engine and aggregate specifications rather than as an independently measured flight result.

Second-stage propulsion

Stage 2 uses one vacuum-optimized Archimedes engine. Its listed vacuum thrust is 900 kN. The engine is designed for operation after the atmosphere has thinned, where a larger nozzle can expand the exhaust more efficiently than a sea-level nozzle.

Throttle and restart capability

The Payload User Guide lists a minimum throttle level of 65% and restart capability for the engines on both stages. Throttling helps manage acceleration and loads during flight; restart capability supports mission sequencing and, on the first stage, can provide additional control during the landing burn. These are published capabilities, not yet flight-proven Neutron results.

Neutron’s published size and payload figures

The following values come from Rocket Lab’s Payload User Guide version 1.0, dated January 2025, except where noted. Dimensions describe the first and second stages separately, not the full stacked vehicle with its payload enclosure.

Reusable-configuration payload to low Earth orbit Approximately 13,000 kg Rocket Lab current product information and a 2026 SEC filing; the value is an approximate company figure

The approximately 13,000 kg low-Earth-orbit figure applies to the reusable configuration. The delivered payload for a particular mission will depend on orbit altitude and inclination, launch azimuth, recovery profile, reserves, spacecraft hardware and safety constraints. An RTLS mission generally gives up some payload performance compared with a downrange landing because of the return maneuver.

Where Neutron will launch and recover

LC-3 at the Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport on Wallops Island, Virginia, is Rocket Lab’s dedicated Neutron test, launch and landing site. The company says the complex supports return-to-Earth missions and represents the largest orbital-launch capacity in the spaceport’s history.

A site designed for both launch and landing allows the vehicle, pad systems and recovery operations to be developed together. It does not, however, make the rocket operational by itself. Flight qualification, range approval, production readiness, ground testing and mission certification still have to be completed.

When will Neutron launch?

Rocket Lab’s October 14, 2026 update says the inaugural Neutron launch is now expected in 2027. That is the current company expectation, not a guaranteed date. Earlier company announcements targeted 2025 or 2026 and are no longer current.

Rocket Lab’s June 30, 2026 SEC filing reports ongoing qualification testing, continued Archimedes testing, progress on the second stage and reusable fairing, and first-stage tank production aligned with delivery to the pad in the fourth quarter of 2026. The filing also cautions that exact launch timing depends on first-stage qualification and other critical tests.

  • Current status: Neutron remains a development vehicle and has not begun orbital service.
  • Latest stated target: inaugural launch in 2027.
  • Schedule condition: qualification tests, engine work, stage and fairing progress, tank production and pad readiness must remain on track.
  • How to interpret the date: treat 2027 as a planning target that can move, not as a fixed launch appointment.

Why the design is significant—and what remains unproven

Potential benefits

  • Reusing the first stage and captive fairing could reduce the amount of flight hardware discarded per mission.
  • A methane engine is intended to offer a useful performance and vehicle-sizing compromise while supporting repeated operation.
  • RTLS and DRL profiles give mission planners a choice between simpler pad recovery and higher payload performance.
  • A dedicated launch-and-landing complex could support a higher launch cadence once the vehicle is qualified.

Development challenges

  • The carbon-composite first stage must survive ascent, cryogenic propellant loading, re-entry heating, aerodynamic forces and landing loads repeatedly.
  • Nine engines must operate together on ascent, while the vacuum engine must perform reliably after stage separation and during any planned restart sequence.
  • A marine landing adds weather, range, ship-positioning and stage-capture constraints even when it improves payload performance.
  • Published payload, thrust and reuse figures describe the planned vehicle. They are not substitutes for orbital flight data, turnaround demonstrations or an established launch cadence.

Rocket Lab CEO Sir Peter Beck said at the August 28, 2025 LC-3 opening that Neutron is intended to provide responsive space access with a high-cadence reusable launch vehicle, serving low Earth orbit and the International Space Station and eventually missions to the Moon and Mars. That statement describes the program’s intended scope; the vehicle’s operational maturity will be established only through testing and flights.
