rip.exe is not a single Windows component. The same filename is used by unrelated programs, including RegRipper’s command-line Registry-hive parser and PrintFactory’s commercial RIP application. A filename alone cannot tell you whether a copy is safe, which program installed it, or why it is failing.
Before deleting or replacing it, record the complete path, publisher, digital-signature status, parent application and exact error text. Those details determine whether you should repair an application, install a missing runtime, use a documented forensic command, or investigate a potentially unwanted or malicious file.

Why the name rip.exe is ambiguous
Windows identifies an executable by its full path and file metadata, not just its basename. Two files can both be called rip.exe while belonging to entirely different products and requiring unrelated fixes.

RegRipper’s rip.exe
Kaspersky’s Incident Response Guide documents a rip.exe supplied with RegRipper, a command-line utility that parses Windows Registry hives for forensic analysis. In that context, the executable is expected to be launched with the tool’s documented command-line syntax and kept with the RegRipper package. It is not the same program as a print-production RIP application.

PrintFactory’s RIP.exe
PrintFactory documents a commercial application whose executable is also named RIP.exe. Its failures can involve application files or a Microsoft Visual C++ runtime dependency. A crash report that names MSVCP140.dll, for example, points to a different repair path than an error raised while parsing a Registry hive.
Application-dependent EXE errors
Windows may display a generic “rip.exe has stopped working,” “The application was unable to start,” or similar message. Such wording identifies an executable failure, not a unique Windows component. The owning application, installation source and faulting module must be established before choosing a remedy.
Is rip.exe safe?
There is no filename-only safety verdict. A copy in the expected installation directory of a known, digitally signed application can be legitimate. A copy launched from %TEMP%, Downloads, an unfamiliar AppData subfolder or a directory created by an untrusted installer deserves closer investigation. Location is a clue, not proof: legitimate installers and portable tools can use nonstandard folders, while malicious files can imitate a trusted name.

Indicators that support legitimacy
- The path is inside the folder you chose for the known parent application.
- File Properties identifies the expected product and publisher.
- The Digital Signatures tab shows a valid signature that chains to a recognized publisher and the file has not been modified since signing.
- The file appeared when you intentionally installed or updated RegRipper, PrintFactory or another application that documents a
rip.exe. - Microsoft Defender finds no threat and the file behaves as the parent application’s documented component.
Indicators that require investigation
- The executable runs from a temporary, Downloads or unexpected AppData directory.
- Properties has no publisher, an invalid signature, a mismatched product name or a recent creation time unrelated to any software you installed.
- The process starts at logon, recreates itself after deletion, launches child processes you do not recognize, or appears with a security alert.
- The error began after an unsolicited attachment, bundled installer or suspicious website download.
None of these signs by itself proves malware. They tell you to stop treating the file as an ordinary application error and complete the verification and scanning steps below.
Identify the exact file before changing anything
- Capture the message. Take a screenshot or copy the complete pop-up text. Note whether it names a faulting module such as
MSVCP140.dll, an error code, a license message or a command-line failure. If the dialog closes too quickly, open Event Viewer, go to Windows Logs › Application, and inspect the error recorded at the same time. - Record the complete path. In Task Manager, right-click the process (if it is running) and choose Open file location. For an Event Viewer entry, copy the path shown in the event details. A path such as
C:Program Files…can be consistent with an installed product;C:Users<name>AppDataLocalTemp…needs more scrutiny. - Read File Properties. Right-click the file, select Properties, and review the Details tab for Product name, File description, Version and Copyright. On Digital Signatures, select the signer and choose Details; Windows should report whether the signature is valid. A missing signature is not automatic proof of malware, but it removes one useful confirmation.
- Match it to an installed application. Check Settings › Apps › Installed apps (or Apps & features on older Windows) and the application’s own installation folder. If you cannot identify an owner, do not run the file again merely to see what it does.
- Check the process context. In Task Manager’s Details tab, add columns such as Publisher and Command line if available. A RegRipper invocation should correspond to forensic work you started; a PrintFactory process should appear when that application is being used. An unexplained startup entry or command line is a reason to scan before further testing.
For an additional local check, PowerShell can display the signer without executing the file:
Get-AuthenticodeSignature -FilePath 'C:fullpathrip.exe'Read the returned status and signer, then compare them with the product details. This is evidence for your decision, not a guarantee that the file is safe.
What causes rip.exe errors?
An executable was overwritten by an older version
Application updates, rollback tools or manual copying can replace a working executable with an older build. Outbyte’s troubleshooting material lists an EXE being overwritten by an older version as a common cause. The symptom may be a crash after an update, a missing entry-point message or incompatibility with a newer supporting component. Repairing or reinstalling the owning application from its official vendor source restores a matched set of files more reliably than downloading one replacement executable.
An installation or removal finished incorrectly
An interrupted install, failed update or incomplete uninstall can leave a shortcut pointing to a file that no longer exists, or leave an executable beside incompatible libraries. If the error started immediately after such an event, use the application’s documented Repair option when available. Otherwise uninstall it, restart Windows, and reinstall a current package obtained from the official vendor. Preserve project files and product licenses before removing software.

A missing or faulty runtime dependency
PrintFactory documents a concrete dependency case: a faulty MSVCP140.dll can crash RIP or prevent license activation. This is a Microsoft Visual C++ runtime problem, not evidence that every rip.exe is corrupt. Install the official x64 Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable for Visual Studio 2015–2022, restart Windows, and then relaunch or reactivate RIP. Do not replace MSVCP140.dll with a file downloaded from a DLL mirror; mixing builds can create new failures and introduces an untrusted file.
Malware or a potentially unwanted application
A bundled installer, compromised web page or unexpected attachment can place an executable under a familiar name. In this case, repeatedly launching the file or copying a “clean” version over it can preserve the underlying problem. Treat an unexpected path, security alert or unexplained persistence as a security investigation and follow the Defender procedure below.

RegRipper’s rip.exe is a command-line forensic utility. A malformed command, a missing Registry hive or a package assembled from mismatched files can look like an executable failure even when the binary is legitimate. Use the syntax documented for the exact RegRipper release and obtain the complete package from a trusted forensic-software source.
Manual steps to fix a rip.exe error
1. Stop and preserve evidence
Write down the path, error wording, time of failure, recent software changes and the application you were trying to use. If the file is unexpected, disconnecting from the network temporarily can limit further communication while you investigate, but do not delete files before Windows Security records a detection if you may need that evidence. Back up personal documents before uninstalling a parent application.

2. Repair the owning application
- Open Settings › Apps › Installed apps and select the product that owns the file.
- Choose Advanced options and use Repair when Windows offers it. This normally preserves user data; read the product’s own prompt.
- Launch the application again. If the same error remains, use the vendor’s uninstaller, restart Windows, and reinstall the current release from the official vendor source.
- Re-check the path and signature after reinstalling. A new file should belong to the same product directory and show coherent version information.
Do not download a standalone rip.exe from an EXE or DLL mirror. A replacement with the right name can be the wrong build, unsigned, bundled with unwanted software or deliberately malicious.
3. Apply the PrintFactory-specific runtime fix
Use this branch only when the file is the PrintFactory RIP application and the error or Event Viewer entry names MSVCP140.dll or a related Visual C++ runtime failure.
- Obtain the official x64 Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable for Visual Studio 2015–2022 from Microsoft’s software distribution channel.
- Install it, allowing the installer to repair or update the existing runtime.
- Restart Windows rather than merely closing the error dialog.
- Relaunch PrintFactory RIP and, if prompted, reactivate its license.
If the application is 32-bit or the vendor gives a different architecture instruction, follow that vendor guidance instead of installing random DLL files. If the runtime install itself fails, record its error code and use Microsoft’s documented redistributable troubleshooting steps.
4. Use RegRipper’s documented command-line workflow
When Properties and the path show that the file belongs to RegRipper, keep the executable with the rest of that trusted package. Open the documentation for your exact release, confirm the required hive and plugin arguments, and run the command from an account that can read the hive. A failure caused by an invalid argument or missing input is not repaired by replacing the executable. If you did not intentionally install a forensic tool, stop and verify its source before running it.
5. Scan an unexpected file with Microsoft Defender
- Open Windows Security and select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection updates or Check for updates and update the security intelligence.
- Return to Scan options, select Full scan, and start the scan. A full scan can take considerable time.
- When the file is persistent, a threat is detected, or a normal scan is inconclusive, select Microsoft Defender Offline scan and choose Scan now. Windows restarts and scans before the normal desktop loads.
- Afterward, open Protection history, expand each detection and choose Quarantine or Remove as appropriate. Do not restore a detection simply because its filename looks familiar.
Microsoft’s potentially unwanted application (PUA) controls can block an app or download, but a detected PUA remains on the system until you select an action in Protection history. Review the detection name, path and recommended action rather than assuming that a PUA label means the file is a virus.
6. Re-test only after the scan or repair
Restart Windows, launch the parent application from its normal shortcut, and check Event Viewer if it fails again. Compare the new faulting module and path with your original notes. If the path changes, the publisher is unknown, or the file returns after quarantine, stop troubleshooting it as a normal application and seek incident-response or Microsoft support appropriate to your environment.

The table is a decision aid, not a substitute for checking the actual file. A malicious copy can imitate a product name, and a legitimate unsigned utility can exist; combine path, metadata, source, behavior and scan results.
Should you delete rip.exe?
Do not delete it solely because the basename looks unfamiliar. Deleting a legitimate RegRipper or PrintFactory executable can break the parent application and may remove evidence needed to diagnose the failure. First identify the owner and scan the file.

A practical decision path
- Known path, known publisher, no detection: repair or reinstall the parent application. For PrintFactory with
MSVCP140.dll, repair the official x64 Visual C++ runtime, restart and relaunch. - RegRipper path and command-line context: verify the package source and use the exact documented syntax; correct the hive or arguments instead of replacing the executable.
- Unknown path or unexpected arrival: update Defender, run a Full scan, use Offline scan if needed, and review Protection history.
- Detection or persistence after quarantine: stop launching the file and escalate the incident; repeated manual replacement is not a security fix.
