Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →RevertTool.exe appears to be an executable associated with Restoro Windows-repair software, but the available evidence does not document its exact function or establish that every copy is safe. A Windows Security detection, combined with an “Undefined” signature status, warrants quarantine and investigation rather than automatic execution or deletion. Verify the file’s location, signer, hash and scan results, then remove unwanted software and use Windows’ staged recovery options to address any remaining errors.
What is RevertTool.exe?
RevertTool.exe is a Windows executable reported in connection with Restoro software. A Microsoft Q&A participant described Windows Security detecting “Restoro’s RevertTool.exe,” while a signature index associates the filename with the publisher name Restoro Limited and labels its status Undefined.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
Those references identify an association, not a complete technical specification. No authoritative, current Restoro page in the available material publishes the file’s purpose, version, SHA-256 hash or a security advisory. The filename by itself therefore cannot tell you whether a particular copy is legitimate, unwanted or malicious.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Windows can show an executable alert for several reasons: a security product may classify the file as potentially unwanted, the file may be damaged, or a copy may have arrived from an untrusted download. The location and provenance matter. A copy inside a Restoro directory that you deliberately installed is more consistent with the reported association than one in Downloads, Temp or a randomly named system folder, but path alone is never proof.

Is RevertTool.exe safe?
There is no blanket yes-or-no answer. Treat an unexpected copy as potentially unwanted until you complete the checks below. A publisher name or valid digital signature can help establish origin, but neither overrides an antivirus detection.
| Evidence | What it tells you | What it does not prove |
|---|---|---|
| File is in a Restoro folder you knowingly installed | The location is consistent with the reported Restoro association. | That the file is harmless or that it is the original, unmodified file. |
| Digital signature shows Restoro Limited and is valid | The signed publisher and certificate validity can be recorded for comparison. | That Windows Security’s detection is a false positive. |
| Windows Security detects the file | The file should be scanned and, if detection remains, quarantined. | That the file caused every Windows, update, audio or application problem reported by a user. |
| Signature index status is “Undefined” | The listing does not give the file a settled safety classification. | That the file is malware or that every file with this name is unsafe. |
The Microsoft Q&A report is a user account from 2022, not a Microsoft malware verdict. It also mentions Windows Update, Firewall, audio and app problems, so it cannot establish that RevertTool.exe caused those symptoms. Microsoft’s guidance describes unwanted software as programs that make changes without clear consent, install unexpectedly, alter settings, display excessive warnings or resist removal. Download software only from an official publisher site or the Microsoft Store, and keep Microsoft Defender Antivirus enabled.
What does an “Undefined” signature status mean?
ThreatInfo’s index lists RevertTool.exe under Restoro Limited but gives the entry an Undefined status. That label is not a clean bill of health and it is not a malware verdict. It means the listing does not provide a settled safety classification. Use it as a reason to perform local verification, not as a substitute for a scan.
Likewise, a digital signature answers a limited question: whether Windows can validate the signing certificate and identify the signer on that file. It does not prove that the program is desirable, that the installer was obtained from an official source, or that a security product’s detection is incorrect. A modified or replacement file may also have a different signer or no signature at all.
How to verify a copy without running it
Do not open the executable to “test” it. Perform the following checks while it is inactive.

- Record the full path. Open Task Manager if the process is running, right-click the entry and choose Open file location. Otherwise search in File Explorer, right-click the result and choose Open file location. Record the drive, folders, filename and modified date. Do not rely on the name alone. A deliberately installed Restoro folder is more plausible than a temporary or randomly named folder, but location is only one data point.
- Inspect the properties. Right-click the file, select Properties, and review the Digital Signatures tab. Select the signer, choose Details, and record whether Windows reports that the signature is valid, the signer name and the signing timestamp. Compare the signer with the reported Restoro Limited association. If there is no signature, the signature is invalid or the signer is unrelated, increase the file’s risk rating.
- Calculate the hash. In PowerShell, use a command that points to the exact path, for example:
Get-FileHash "C:pathtoRevertTool.exe" -Algorithm SHA256
Save the resulting SHA-256 value. There is no authoritative reference hash in the available evidence, so a hash is useful for identification and later support requests, not a pass/fail safety verdict. Make sure the path is quoted if it contains spaces. - Scan the file. In Windows Security, open Virus & threat protection, choose Scan options, select a custom scan if available, and target the file or its containing folder. Then run a full scan of the device. If Windows Security still reports the file, choose quarantine rather than Allow on device or Restore.
- Check how it arrived. Review your browser downloads and recently installed applications. A file you did not intentionally download, or one that appeared after a bundled installer, deserves the same caution as a file in a temporary directory. Note the installation date and any other programs installed at the same time.
Never obtain a replacement RevertTool.exe from a third-party EXE or DLL download site. Matching filenames from a mirror do not establish matching code, publisher or hash. Do not upload a sensitive executable to an online scanner if it could contain private data; retain the local hash and detection details for a support case instead.
What to do if RevertTool.exe is currently running
If Windows Security has already flagged the file, avoid interacting with its window or allowing it through a firewall prompt. In Task Manager, record the path first. You can end the task if Windows permits, but do not delete files from a system directory simply because the name looks suspicious. Quarantine through Windows Security, then investigate the associated application. If the process immediately returns, disconnect the device from the network while you complete a full scan and remove unwanted software.

- Keep the detected file quarantined. Do not restore it merely because an application reports that a component is missing.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps in Windows 11, or Settings > Apps > Apps & features in Windows 10. Sort by install date and look for Restoro or another program you do not recognize. Microsoft recommends reviewing recently installed programs when unwanted software is suspected.
- Uninstall software you did not intentionally install. Follow the uninstaller’s prompts, restart if requested, and check the list again after reboot. If the uninstaller fails, do not download a replacement DLL or EXE; leave the detection quarantined and continue scanning.
- Review browser extensions and add-ons. Remove unfamiliar entries, then restart the browser. An unwanted program can persist through an extension even after its desktop application is removed.
- Run another full Windows Security scan. Keep Defender protection enabled while you investigate, and review the protection history for additional detections.
If you intentionally installed Restoro and need it, contact its publisher for a verified installer rather than downloading an isolated executable. If security software continues to detect the file, leave it quarantined and investigate the broader system. A missing-file message is not a reason to override a detection.
How to fix Windows errors associated with RevertTool.exe
The filename does not identify the root cause. Use this least-disruptive-first sequence, and back up important files before recovery operations. Write down the exact error text, when it began, and whether it follows a Windows update or a newly installed program; those details help you choose the least disruptive option.
1. Run the relevant built-in troubleshooter
In Windows 11, open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters and run the troubleshooter that matches the symptom, such as Windows Update, audio or network. In Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot. Apply only the recommended change and test the original problem afterward. Troubleshooters normally preserve files and installed applications, so they are the safest first step.

2. Reinstall Windows through Windows Update (Windows 11 22H2 or later)
On supported Windows 11 installations, open Settings > System > Recovery. Under Fix problems using Windows Update, choose Reinstall now and follow the prompts. Microsoft describes this option as reinstalling the current Windows version while preserving personal files, apps and settings. Keep the computer connected to power and the internet, and do not interrupt the restart sequence. It is intended for damaged Windows components when the installation still starts normally; it does not replace malware removal.

If the error began immediately after Windows Update, open Settings > Windows Update > Update history > Uninstall updates. Select the newest update that matches the start of the problem and choose Uninstall. Restart and test. Do not remove older updates at random; record the update name and date so you can reverse the decision if needed. This option preserves personal files and most applications, but the same update may be offered again later.
4. Use System Restore
When an appropriate restore point exists, open Control Panel, search for Recovery, choose Open System Restore, select a point dated before the errors began, and complete the wizard. System Restore can reverse system files, drivers and settings, but it is not a substitute for scanning or backing up personal data. Review the programs and drivers that Windows says will be affected before you confirm.
5. Check protected system files
Open an elevated Command Prompt by searching for Command Prompt, right-clicking it and choosing Run as administrator. Run:
SFC /scannow
Wait for verification to reach 100 percent, note the result and restart. A Microsoft Q&A participant reported trying this command and later reported that Reset this PC while keeping personal files resolved broader symptoms. That is an anecdotal outcome, not proof that SFC repairs RevertTool.exe or that Reset this PC is necessary for your case. If SFC reports that it could not complete, record that message instead of repeatedly deleting files.

6. Reset this PC only when earlier options fail
Open Settings > System > Recovery > Reset this PC in Windows 11, or Settings > Update & Security > Recovery > Reset this PC in Windows 10. Choose Keep my files or Remove everything according to your backup and recovery plan. “Keep my files” still removes installed applications and resets settings, so export license information and application data first. Do not start the reset until your backup is verified and the device can remain powered throughout the process.

| Built-in troubleshooter | Preserved | Usually preserved | No | Usually easy to undo | A specific update, audio, network or Windows component symptom. |
| Uninstall a recent update | Preserved | Most apps and settings preserved | No | Often reversible by reinstalling the update | The problem started directly after a named update. |
| Reinstall Windows using Windows Update (Windows 11 22H2+) | Preserved | Microsoft says apps and settings are preserved | No | Less reversible than a troubleshooter | Windows components are damaged but the installation still starts normally. |
| System Restore | Personal files generally preserved | System files, drivers and settings roll back | No | Only to available restore points | A suitable restore point predates the failure. |
| Reset this PC | Choice of keeping or removing files | Installed apps are removed and settings reset | No for the built-in reset | Limited; reinstall work is required | Earlier recovery steps did not resolve persistent corruption. |
| Clean installation from Microsoft media | Removed from the selected drive | Windows, apps and settings removed | Yes | No | Malware or severe compromise persists after backups and safer recovery attempts. |
Think of the choices in terms of disruption and persistence. A troubleshooter or update removal normally changes the least. Reinstalling Windows through Windows Update preserves more than a reset but is still a system-level operation. Reset this PC removes applications, and a clean installation removes everything on the selected drive. If malware remains, preserving the old installation can preserve the problem too, which is why Microsoft treats clean installation as the strongest reset.
When a clean installation is necessary
If scans continue to report malware or Windows remains compromised, create installation media from Microsoft and perform a clean reinstall. Microsoft warns that this removes Windows, applications, settings and personal files from the selected drive. Back up documents, browser data and other needed files first, and make sure you have the BitLocker recovery key before changing partitions or reinstalling. Confirm that backups open on another device before erasing anything.
After installation, apply Windows updates, enable Microsoft Defender Antivirus, reinstall applications from official sources and restore only files you trust. Do not copy the quarantined executable back to the new installation. Recheck browser extensions and installed applications after restoring data.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Deleting by filename alone: manually removing a file from a program or system directory can break an installation without addressing the underlying issue. Quarantine and uninstall through Windows first.
- Assuming a signature guarantees safety: check the signer and validity, but respect a continuing antivirus detection.
- Restoring a detected file to stop an error: repair the application through its official installer or uninstall it instead.
- Using a registry, DLL or EXE “fixer” download: third-party replacement files can be modified and are not evidence of a legitimate repair.
- Resetting without preparation: verify backups, application installers, account access and the BitLocker recovery key before disruptive recovery.
- Attributing every symptom to RevertTool.exe: the available user report does not establish that this executable caused Windows Update, Firewall, audio or application failures.
- Ignoring the source: software obtained through a bundle or unofficial mirror deserves extra scrutiny even when its filename and icon look familiar.
- Skipping a second scan: removing one file does not prove that other unwanted components are gone; complete a full-device scan after uninstalling suspicious software.
As an optional shortcut after the manual checks, Outbyte PC Repair can look for common Windows issues, adjust selected system settings, clean temporary and cache files, check for vulnerabilities and log application crashes. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7; a free trial by category lasts at least two days before a subscription. It complements antivirus software, does not replace it, and results vary—no tool repairs every crash.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is RevertTool.exe a virus?
The filename alone cannot answer that. It has been reported in connection with Restoro, while one signature index lists Restoro Limited and marks the status “Undefined.” If Windows Security detects your copy, quarantine it and verify its path, signer, SHA-256 hash and scan results instead of running it.
Best Value
Why did Windows Security detect RevertTool.exe?
The detection may indicate unwanted software, a damaged file or an untrusted copy. The 2022 Microsoft Q&A post is a user report, not a Microsoft malware classification, and does not prove that RevertTool.exe caused the other Windows problems described there.
Can I delete RevertTool.exe?
Do not delete it solely by filename. Leave a detected copy quarantined, uninstall Restoro or another unwanted application through Windows, and scan the device. Manual deletion can break a program without removing related components.
Where should a legitimate copy be located?
A file inside a Restoro directory that you intentionally installed is more consistent with the reported association than a copy in Downloads, Temp or a randomly named system folder. Location is not proof, so also check the signature and scan result.
What if the file has a valid Restoro Limited signature?
Record the signer, validity and timestamp, then compare them with the reported Restoro Limited association. A valid signature helps identify origin but does not override a continuing Windows Security detection.
Will SFC /scannow fix RevertTool.exe errors?
SFC checks protected Windows system files. A Microsoft Q&A participant said they tried it, but that anecdote does not show that SFC repairs RevertTool.exe. Run it only as part of the broader recovery sequence and keep the detection quarantined.
Should I reset Windows immediately?
No. Back up first and start with the relevant troubleshooter, update removal or System Restore. On Windows 11 version 22H2 or later, reinstalling Windows through Windows Update can preserve files, apps and settings. Reset this PC removes installed applications, and a clean installation removes data from the selected drive.
When is a clean installation warranted?
Use Microsoft installation media when scans continue to report malware or Windows remains compromised after safer recovery attempts. Back up first and obtain the BitLocker recovery key because a clean installation removes Windows, apps, settings and personal files from the selected drive.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: RevertTool.exe is associated with Restoro, but its exact purpose and safety are not established. Do not run an unexpected copy or download a replacement. Record its path, inspect the Restoro Limited signature, calculate a SHA-256 hash, scan the file and device, and quarantine any continuing detection. Remove software you did not install, then use Windows recovery options from least disruptive to most disruptive. Reserve a clean installation for persistent compromise, and back up your data and BitLocker key first.
