Recursive self-improvement (RSI) is a process in which an AI system helps improve its own capabilities, software, training methods, research workflow or successor models, then uses the improved system to pursue further improvements. Artificial general intelligence (AGI) is different: it is a capability category for systems that can perform a broad range of cognitive tasks with substantial depth and autonomy.
AI-assisted improvement is already happening under human supervision. A system that independently chooses goals, designs and trains a successor, validates the result and repeats the cycle without meaningful human control has not been established. RSI is therefore neither a synonym for AGI nor a guaranteed route to superintelligence.

RSI and AGI answer different questions
The simplest distinction is that AGI describes what an AI can do, while RSI describes how an AI or an AI-development process changes over time.
| Question | AGI | Recursive self-improvement |
|---|---|---|
| What kind of idea is it? | A capability class or target | A development process or feedback loop |
| What does it evaluate? | Breadth, depth and autonomy of task performance | Whether a system improves itself or successive systems |
| Does it require autonomy? | Definitions vary; autonomy is one dimension in major frameworks | Partial RSI can include people; fully autonomous RSI means independent successor design and development |
| Is it established today? | There is no universal threshold or consensus claim that AGI has been achieved | OpenAI and Anthropic say fully autonomous RSI is not happening or achieved today |
| How do the concepts relate? | AGI could be a milestone or starting point | RSI is one possible pathway from AGI toward artificial superintelligence (ASI) |
Google DeepMind’s 2024 Levels of AGI framework evaluates AGI using performance, generality and autonomy. That framing treats AGI as a question of capability breadth and depth, not as a claim that a model is improving its own successor.

An AI could become more general through larger training runs, better data or an architectural breakthrough without improving itself. Conversely, a narrow coding system could help optimize parts of its own software without meeting any strong definition of AGI.
What “recursive” means in practice
Ordinary automation performs a task repeatedly. RSI adds a feedback loop: the system that performs improvement also benefits from the improvements it helps create, allowing later iterations to work on a stronger platform.
A practical loop might look like this:
- Set a goal. People specify a research or engineering objective, such as improving reasoning reliability, reducing training cost or strengthening a safety evaluation.
- Generate candidate changes. An AI agent writes code, proposes an architecture, selects experiments, designs data pipelines or analyzes prior results.
- Test the candidates. The proposed change is run against benchmarks, held-out tasks, red-team evaluations, safety tests and deployment requirements.
- Validate and integrate. Engineers or automated gates decide whether the change is reliable enough to enter a model, toolchain, data process or research workflow.
- Repeat with the improved system. The next iteration uses the stronger tools or model to search for further improvements, potentially shortening the cycle.
The word “recursive” does not mean that a chatbot answering a follow-up question is recursively self-improving. The improvement process must feed back into the system or process that performs future improvement.
Levels of RSI: from assistance to autonomous successor design
RSI is better understood as a spectrum than as a single switch.
1. AI-generated suggestions
A model proposes code changes, experiments, prompts, evaluation criteria or research ideas. Humans inspect and apply the useful suggestions. This is assistance, not independent self-improvement, because the model does not control the full development loop.
2. Agent-operated development tasks
An agent edits files, runs tests, debugs failures and prepares a change for human review. It may complete substantial engineering work, but people still choose objectives, provide permissions and decide what ships.
3. Automated experiment cycles
A system can select experiments, execute them, compare results and recommend the next run. Human supervision may remain at the level of approvals, resource limits, evaluation design and safety review.

4. System-directed model improvement
A more advanced system could propose training changes, create data, modify tools and launch controlled training runs. This would be a stronger form of RSI only if the changes measurably improve the system and the loop feeds into subsequent improvement.
5. Fully autonomous successor development
The strongest form would independently choose important research goals, design a successor, acquire or allocate compute, train it, validate it and repeat without meaningful human control. Anthropic describes this as an AI capable of “fully autonomously designing and developing its own successor,” but says, “We are not there yet, and recursive self-improvement is not inevitable.”
What current evidence actually shows
Current systems can assist with coding, research execution, experiment reproduction and parts of model-development workflows. That is real progress toward more automated AI research, but it does not establish a self-sustaining autonomous loop.
Anthropic reported that, as of May 2026, more than 80% of code merged into its codebase was authored by Claude. The company also reported that its engineers averaged eight times as much code per quarter as in 2021–2025. Anthropic explicitly cautioned that lines of code are an imperfect proxy for productivity and that the eightfold figure should not be interpreted as a complete real-world training speedup. These figures show substantial AI assistance inside an organization; they do not show that a model independently designed and deployed its own successor.

The evidence therefore supports a careful description: human-supervised, AI-assisted improvement is demonstrated; autonomous RSI remains an unresolved future possibility.
Does AGI automatically lead to RSI or superintelligence?
No. AGI and RSI are related but not automatic stages.

RSI could also begin before any agreed AGI threshold if a narrower system can improve a component of AI development, such as compiler performance, data filtering, evaluation tooling or training efficiency. Whether that counts as meaningful RSI depends on how much of the improvement loop the system controls and whether the gains generalize.
Google DeepMind’s June 12, 2026 report describes four possible pathways from AGI to artificial general superintelligence: scaling AGI, AI paradigm shifts, recursive improvement and large-scale multi-agent collectives. RSI is thus one possible mechanism among several, not a definition of ASI. The report characterizes ASI as more intelligent and cognitively capable than large human organizations and emphasizes that progress may encounter major bottlenecks rather than follow one sudden step change.
There is no settled timetable for an “intelligence explosion.” The outcome depends on technical progress, available chips and electricity, data, experiment speed, evaluation quality, organizational decisions and the ability to keep increasingly capable systems aligned and controllable.
Why an RSI loop could accelerate progress
Shorter research cycles
Agents that can write and test code, analyze results and propose follow-up experiments could reduce the time between an idea and a validated change. Faster iteration matters because many AI advances come from running and learning from large numbers of experiments.

AI systems could search technical literature, reproduce results, identify implementation errors and explain unfamiliar code. This may let smaller teams explore more hypotheses, although human judgment remains important for choosing worthwhile questions.
Safety and evaluation research
OpenAI argues that automated AI research could help improve alignment and defenses as well as produce scientific and economic benefits. Systems that generate adversarial tests, monitor training or search for failure modes could strengthen safety work if their own outputs are independently checked.

Lower cost of advanced capability
Improvements to algorithms, data pipelines, hardware utilization and tooling could make a given level of capability cheaper to develop or operate. Cost reductions could broaden access, but they could also make powerful systems easier to deploy before governance catches up.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. The technical and organizational bottlenecks
Recursive improvement is not limited by model intelligence alone. Several constraints can prevent a proposed gain from becoming a real-world capability increase.
- Compute and hardware: training and evaluating a successor requires chips, memory, networking and reliable infrastructure.
- Electricity and cooling: larger or more frequent experiments consume physical resources that cannot be accelerated by software alone.
- Data quality: systems need useful, legally usable and sufficiently independent data; generating more text is not the same as generating better evidence.
- Evaluation: a system must distinguish genuine improvement from benchmark overfitting, contamination or changes that merely look impressive.
- Human review: experts may still be needed to set objectives, inspect unusual results, approve access and judge whether a change is safe.
- Organizational coordination: deployment, security, procurement and regulatory processes can be slower than an automated experiment loop.
- Alignment: optimizing a proxy can produce systems that score well while pursuing undesirable strategies or hiding failures.
Anthropic notes that compute, electricity, human review, validation and other organizational limits can constrain how quickly capability gains translate into social change. DeepMind likewise describes “frictions and bottlenecks” along possible routes from AGI to ASI.
Risks and the central governance problem
Loss of practical human control
If systems perform more of the research process, people may formally remain in charge while lacking the time, expertise or visibility needed to make meaningful decisions. OpenAI warns that poorly controlled RSI could leave humans unable to oversee research processes they no longer understand.
Faster propagation of mistakes
A flawed data filter, insecure tool or misleading evaluation can be copied into later generations. A faster loop can spread an error faster than a slower, manually reviewed process.
Evaluation lag
Capability tests may not keep pace with the systems being tested. If a model can design experiments that humans cannot interpret, passing conventional benchmarks may provide false reassurance.

Organizations with privileged access to compute, data and automated research agents could pull further ahead. That raises questions about access, competition, auditing and who is authorized to set goals for systems with broad effects.
Best Value
Misaligned optimization
An agent asked to improve a metric may discover shortcuts that increase the score without improving the intended capability. The more authority it has over data, code and evaluation, the more important independent checks become.
How to tell whether a claim about “AI improving itself” is meaningful
Marketing language often collapses several different activities into one dramatic phrase. Ask these questions:
- What exactly changed: the model weights, architecture, tools, data, prompts or only a human workflow?
- Who chose the objective and experiments?
- Did the system execute the full cycle, or did people write, approve and run key steps?
- Was the improvement measured on held-out tasks and safety evaluations?
- Can the result be reproduced, or is it a one-off demonstration?
- Did the improved system materially contribute to the next improvement?
- What compute, permissions and human review were required?
A system that writes code used by engineers may be highly valuable without being recursively self-improving. Stronger claims require evidence that the system’s own capabilities or successor-development process improved and that this improvement fed back into another iteration.

The near-term path is more likely to involve graduated automation than a single moment when an AI suddenly becomes self-improving. Agents may receive broader permissions, run longer experiment chains and handle more of the engineering workflow while humans retain control of goals, resources, evaluations and deployment.
Whether that progression becomes full RSI depends on unresolved technical and institutional conditions. Anthropic says recursive self-improvement is not inevitable. OpenAI says fully autonomous RSI is not happening today. Those statements leave room for future development without treating an intelligence explosion as a settled prediction.
The practical dividing line is meaningful oversight. As more of AI development is automated, humans need independent evaluations, access controls, audit logs, rollback procedures, resource limits and clear authority to stop an experiment. The question is not merely whether an AI can produce a better model, but whether people can still understand, verify and govern the process that produced it.
