In supported conversations it adds typing indicators, read receipts, higher-resolution media, file sharing, and richer group features that SMS and MMS cannot provide.
RCS is not one universal security or availability level. Your phone, messaging app, carrier, country, and the other participants all matter. Most importantly, the word “RCS” alone does not prove end-to-end encryption: check the conversation’s actual security indicator.

What RCS messaging is
RCS stands for Rich Communication Services. It is an industry-standard protocol designed to make phone-number messaging more capable than traditional SMS (Short Message Service) and MMS (Multimedia Messaging Service). Instead of sending every message through the carrier’s basic texting channel, an RCS-capable app can use mobile data or Wi-Fi.

Google Messages and Apple’s Messages app can present RCS as part of the normal text-message experience, but support is conditional rather than universal.

For a conversation to use RCS in Google Messages, the participants need compatible devices and apps with RCS enabled. The carrier and region must also support the service. If those conditions are not met, Google Messages may send the message as SMS or MMS instead, depending on the app’s settings and the circumstances.
RCS versus SMS and MMS
RCS is often described as “the next-generation text message,” but it is not simply a new name for SMS. The transport, features, and security state can all change.

A fallback is more than a change in label. Typing status and read receipts do not carry over when the conversation is sent as ordinary SMS or MMS. The security properties change as well: Google’s security documentation says SMS and MMS are not end-to-end encrypted.

What you can do with RCS
See when someone is typing
In an eligible RCS conversation, the app can show that the other participant is composing a reply. This signal is exchanged through the RCS service and disappears when the conversation falls back to SMS or MMS.
Use read receipts
RCS can report when a message has been read. Both the app and the participants’ settings affect whether you see the status. A missing receipt does not necessarily mean the message was not delivered; the recipient may have disabled read receipts, may be offline, or the conversation may have switched to SMS/MMS.
Send higher-resolution media
RCS is designed for larger, clearer photos and videos than conventional MMS. “Higher resolution” does not mean unlimited original-quality transfer: the app, provider, network, and file-size rules still apply. If the recipient cannot use RCS, the same media may be compressed or handled as MMS.
Share files and richer group messages
Supported RCS implementations can send files and provide more capable group-chat behavior than carrier texting. The exact controls are implementation-specific, so a feature shown in one app or country is not proof that every RCS service offers it.

How RCS delivery works
When you press send, your messaging app first determines whether the conversation can use RCS. It considers the participants’ phone numbers, whether their devices and apps support RCS, whether RCS is enabled, and whether the relevant carrier or provider offers it in that region. When the checks succeed, the message travels over data or Wi-Fi.
If the recipient lacks RCS, has disabled it, or the service is temporarily unavailable, the app can use SMS or MMS instead. Google Messages can be configured to fall back, but the exact behavior depends on settings and circumstances. A message that appears in the same conversation thread can therefore have different features and protections from one message to the next.
All participants need RCS turned on for a Google Messages conversation to operate as RCS. A group with one unsupported participant may lose RCS features or use a different delivery path. Network connectivity also matters: RCS needs an internet connection, while SMS can sometimes send through the cellular signaling network when data service is unavailable.
Is RCS the same as texting?
RCS is still phone-number messaging, so it feels like texting to the user. It is not the same technical service as SMS or MMS. The distinction matters when you are checking delivery, media quality, read status, or encryption.
On an Android phone using Google Messages, the compose screen or send indicator can show whether the message will use RCS. On an iPhone, Apple displays both RCS and SMS/MMS as green bubbles. A green bubble therefore does not prove that a message is SMS; open the conversation details or look for the message-type and encryption information supplied by the app.
RCS on iPhone
Apple’s requirements for RCS on iPhone are specific: the phone must run iOS 18 or later, have a data plan, and use a network provider that supports RCS on iPhone. The control is located at Settings > Apps > Messages > RCS Messaging. If the control is missing, Apple says RCS may not be available for that device, provider, or region.
Apple Support states, “Availability varies by region and network provider.” That qualification is important because carrier support is not uniform. Apple’s United States and Canada carrier list identifies providers with RCS support and, in some cases, beta end-to-end encrypted RCS. The list is geographically specific and can change; it does not establish worldwide availability or the feature set offered by every provider.

RCS lets an iPhone exchange messages with non-Apple devices as well as other Apple devices when the requirements are met. The conversation may remain green even though it is using RCS rather than SMS. Check the setting and conversation details instead of relying on bubble color.
Does RCS work between Android and iPhone?
It can, provided the iPhone runs iOS 18 or later, its provider supports RCS, and the Android participant’s app and provider also support RCS. If either side lacks support, the conversation may use SMS or MMS.
Cross-platform support does not make every RCS conversation equally private. Google Messages Help states specifically that “RCS chats with iPhone users don’t have end-to-end encryption” in the documented cross-platform setup. Apple describes end-to-end encrypted RCS as dependent on providers that support the feature, with beta availability in supported cases. Those statements describe different implementations and rollout conditions, not a universal promise for all Android-iPhone chats.
Is RCS encrypted?
There is no single yes-or-no answer. Ask which app and provider carry the conversation, who is participating, and what security indicator the app shows.
Google Messages to Google Messages
Google says RCS chats between Google Messages users are end-to-end encrypted by default when the eligible conditions are met: both sides use Google Messages, RCS is enabled, and the conversation qualifies for that protection. Eligible chats show an encryption indicator. Verify that indicator in the actual conversation rather than assuming it from the presence of an RCS label.
Google Messages with an iPhone
Google’s documented FAQ says RCS chats with iPhone users do not have end-to-end encryption. The conversation can still use RCS features, but the encryption guarantee described for eligible Google Messages-to-Google Messages chats does not apply.
iPhone RCS
Apple describes encrypted RCS as possible where all participants’ network providers support encryption, and its setup guidance describes a beta feature rolling out over time with supported providers. Availability and behavior can differ by provider and geography. Treat an encryption indicator or provider documentation as the deciding evidence.

When RCS falls back
SMS and MMS are not end-to-end encrypted. If a chat changes to SMS or MMS because RCS is unavailable, the privacy state has changed even if the messages remain in the same thread.
What information Google’s RCS service handles
Google describes service-specific processing that should not be generalized to every carrier or RCS implementation. When Google’s infrastructure provides RCS, Google says it uses your phone number, device identifiers, and SIM card number to help deliver messages. It may store those details for about a month and checks contacts to determine whether they can use RCS.

When end-to-end encryption is unavailable, TLS protects traffic between systems, but TLS is not the same as end-to-end encryption: it protects data in transit between endpoints rather than ensuring that only the participants can access the message content.
These details explain why an RCS service can require more account and connection information than basic carrier texting. They do not describe every provider’s retention period or data practice. Read the privacy documentation for the service actually handling your conversation.

A verified business conversation is not equivalent to a private person-to-person encrypted chat. Google says verified business conversations are not end-to-end encrypted. Businesses, messaging solution providers, and carriers may manage those conversations and may access message content for delivery and related purposes.
A verified badge or branded sender helps identify who is contacting you; it is not an encryption guarantee. Avoid sending sensitive information to a business through RCS unless you understand the provider’s privacy terms and the conversation’s security status.

How to turn on or check RCS
Google Messages on Android
- Open Google Messages and tap your profile picture or account menu.
- Open Messages settings > RCS chats. Depending on the app version, the menu may be labeled “Chat features.”
- Check the status. A connected or available status indicates that the service has registered; an unavailable or carrier-disabled status means the provider or network may not support it.
- Install the latest Google Messages update and make Google Messages the phone’s default SMS app if prompted.
- Confirm that mobile data or Wi-Fi works, then send a test message to a contact who also uses RCS.
- On a dual-SIM phone, check which SIM is configured for calls and which is configured for data. Google identifies SIM configuration as a possible cause of registration problems.
If the status remains unavailable, contact the carrier. Repeatedly clearing the app or changing unrelated phone settings will not add carrier support that is not offered in your region.
iPhone
- Open Settings > Apps > Messages > RCS Messaging.
- Turn on RCS Messaging if the control is present.
- Confirm that the iPhone is running iOS 18 or later and that a mobile data plan is active.
- Check whether the network provider supports RCS for your country or region.
- Start a new conversation with a supported contact and inspect the message details rather than relying on the green bubble.
If RCS Messaging does not appear, Apple’s guidance indicates that the feature may not be available through the current device, provider, or region.
Why you might not have RCS
- Unsupported provider: Your carrier has not enabled RCS for your plan or location.
- Unsupported region: A feature available in one country may not be offered in another.
- Old software: iPhone RCS requires iOS 18 or later; Android apps also need current versions for the latest registration and feature support.
- Wrong default app: Google recommends making Google Messages the default SMS app.
- Data or Wi-Fi failure: RCS requires internet connectivity.
- RCS disabled by a participant: Every participant must be eligible and enabled for an RCS conversation.
- Dual-SIM mismatch: The SIM used for calls and the SIM used for data may be configured inconsistently.
- Temporary registration problem: Service outages or a pending carrier activation can leave the status unavailable.
These checks distinguish a local setup problem from a support limitation. If the app reports that the carrier has disabled RCS, only the provider can change that status.
How to tell which kind of message you sent
Look at the compose field, send button, and conversation information supplied by your app. Google Messages can indicate that a message is being sent as an RCS chat or as SMS/MMS. On iPhone, green bubbles cover both RCS and SMS/MMS, so use the RCS setting and message details. Read receipts and typing indicators are useful clues, but their absence alone is not conclusive because users can disable them or lose connectivity.

What RCS means for your everyday messaging
RCS is useful when you want the convenience of a phone-number conversation with modern chat features and your contacts, devices, providers, and region all support it. It can reduce the need to switch to a separate messaging account for typing status, read receipts, clearer media, and file sharing.
Its limits are equally important: RCS is not guaranteed on every phone or network, its features can disappear during fallback, and encryption varies by implementation and participants. Treat it as a negotiated capability between your app, provider, and the people in the conversation—not as a blanket replacement for SMS or a universal privacy standard.
